I was about to fire off a smartbomb for the first time and a pop-up dialog warned me of death, suffering, pain etc. etc. if I went ahead.
Will something bad happen to my security status / life expectancy if I use a smartbomb in empire space, even if there are no objects on the scanner within 5km or whatever it is? I was wondering whether maybe smartbombs have a gradual falloff which means even objects a long way away take a bit of damage?
Thanks for your help with this noddy question,
C.

If you hit neutral ships with a smartbomb, CONCORD will pop your ship.
There are some circustances where a smartbomb would be usefull, but using a smartbomb in .5 space and higher will get CONCORD on your tails. In .4 space and below, you will still get aggro but since CONCORD is not present in .4 and below they won't come after you. Though sentry towers will shoot at you, if you hit a neutral ship or is the one that aggros first.
You can use smartbombs in missions where there are warp scrambling frigates. Even though you are in empire space, you won't get aggro as long you don't hit a neutral ship. --- It have always fallen to a few to sacrifice for the good of many |

Using smartbombs can be a tricky business
In a nutshell - if you use a smartbomb within range of another player in 0.5 space and above then Concord will destroy you.
Activating a smartbomb within rnage of sentry guns in 0.4 to 0.1 will result in a similar response from the sentry guns.
The biggest danger in using smartbombs is the fact that you may activate within range of a cloaked ship and Concord will still kill you.
Using them for deadspace missions should generally be fine as long as you are on your own

There is no inherent problem with using SBs in empire - you just have to be careful.
The warning it to remind you to check that there are no innocent bystanders, or space hardware - canisters, stations, sentries, drones, etc - within range, as they will take damage, and Concord will come and have a little 'chat' with you. If you think you are clear, fire away.
Note that cloaked ships also take damage if in range, and it is difficult to be certain there are none around.
As far as I know, everything in range takes the same damage - no fall-off.

If you are in a player corporation, as you may fire on your corpmates, it should be safe to make missions with smartbombs and your corpmates.
I used smartbombs in missions, but you have to take care that there is no "civilian/neutral" object around you. Such objects are unusual in missions as it seems some have been removed from them (or replaced with a faction other than one protected by concord).
Using smartbombs in a in open space (not a missions where you are the only one to have the waypoint) is just suicide as there are always other players, concord, customs, stations, gates and some civilian industrials at the wrong place at the wrong time and then concord kills you.
in missions, all items with "wanted" are safe to be shot or in smartbomb radius, but you can't really tell for those who are note "wanted". Still, it may be much easier sometimes to use smartbombs for rogue drones missions (because they have short range and most get within 5 km). -- Pocket drone carriers (tm) enthousiast ! Flying Vexor and Ishkur, Myrmidon was too slow, got ganked by 3 BC and a Megathron...

Take care that you do not have your own drones nearby your ship ... they would take damage frome the smartbomb as well.

Well if they take out your own drones also.. can't be a very smart bomb.
Smartbomb is a bad name for these things as a smart bomb actually hits a specific target w/o collateral damage.. these game "smartbombs" seem designed to do nothing but collateral damage.

Why would you want to? Unless you are covered in rats.. seems like a waste. If you can target and attack the gate w/o getting a warning.. a smartbomb wont set off concord either.

Smartbombs in this game are really energy pulses. FoF missles should be called smartbombs really.

You can't activate smartbombs within 5 km of stations, stargates, acceleration gates and other celestial objects (indestructible ones). Don't know about the ones with larger radius than 5 km though

I prefer to call them "dumbbombs" o just "bombs" xD

You can hit gang/fleet members if they're within the same corporation "but not alliance" as you. ______________________

I think "smartbomb" was originally used describe an all destruction weapon. Like in this old game called "Defender" reproducted in some handhelds.
It is only in "modern times" after the USA defense industry invented air-dropped target-seeking bombs that they re-defined "smartbomb". It just made it sound "impressive" in public media. Just like a "smartphone"...which don't seem to smart to me. LOL

I've done it in like "World's Collide", where you gotta fight these mobs near the gate once you get there. Nothing happened. I've also tried it when no one was arround. Nothing happens.

I'ved used smartbombs in every level 1 kill mission I got and I never got ganked by Concord. Just don't press the F key by mistake while traveling. And yeah, say goodbye to your deployed drones. Though I still think it's cool and sometimes I deliberately leave them out to blow them up for the effect. hehehe
