What is Junk?
Junk is loot that you can't use as a module and whose value is only for recycling.
The reason why junk should be introduced is that module loot itself needs to be nerfed. You get way too many lasers, way too many guns, way too many ammo, diags, repairers, etc,. that their is no market value but their mineral value. There is also no point in producing them either for selling. Excess module loot damages manufacturing.
Junk---various grades of junk---will provide mineral yield. You destroy an NPC, and inside the can, you see a cube of scrap metal. Cheap junk may just yield low end minerals, and with different grades of junk, the highest grade of junk may yield high end minerals like zyd and megacyte in different quantities. Same types of junk can be stacked, then refined. Different junk yields diffferent concentrations of minerals.
By using junk (non module loot), true module loot becames rarer and more prized, and reduces module loot competition with true item manufacturers.
Junk takes up about 5 m3 of space like every module, and some may take up 10 m3.

with tech 2 coming into the game, the items will be better than current items in the game including loot, which afaik will not get updated to surpass the attributes of tech 2 items :D

I kike it! Would also be cool, if destroyed ships of cruiser class and above would stay as wrecks, that you could "mine" with special "scavenger-drones" and gain "junk" with this, which you could then refine etc... Imagine the view of a battlefield with drifting wrecks and swarming looters! (remember the intro-video of good ol¦ StarCraft? )

Think this idea has merrits, esepceialy since there are a few spots scattered about where you can find "Debris" and such spinning in the void.

this is what i have been saying for what about a month now
however on a RARE ocasion a module or a piece of equipment should survive (maybe with damege to it) this would still be a good way to add the unike items to EVE Thank You Paw Sandberg

Excellent idea.
And as has been mentioned earlier, there should also be "broken loot" that you could fix. We could have a new neat skill for that, something like "module identifying"(MI). If the module is very broken, you would need a high MI skill to identify it. If you don't have that skill, it would appear to you as "junk" and for all intents and purposes would act as junk (junk can't be stacked).
Also, this skill would allow you to identify genuine junk (non repairable) to see a rough estimate of its minaral values right on the spot, so you could decide if that particular piece of junk would be worth gathering at all.
Then we would have roles like "junk identifying specialist" and "professional scavenger" ;)

Honestly I still use proj weapons and I go out and can re-supply myself off the loot and stay out hunting indefinetly if all i'm after is the cash... I'd rather hunt more than spend time hauling the junk back to the station -----------

Great idea Slithereen,
Would be good to see debris floating from a large battle. This should be scann-able to identify a worthwhile item that can be refined/fixed as described by others.

Ideally this is how all the loot should be, chunks of debris where you retrieve modules and scrapmetal from.
