With the death of my last Nanophoon and my unwillingness to replace my snakes (stupid bubble...), I've decided to fly a more normal phoon and wean myself off the soon to be nerfed nano teat. Thing is, I dunno which one to use. I got two lovely options.
Da Gankaphoon: 4x Arby siege 4x Biggest-guns-that-fit (I think 650s)
1x AB/MWD (whichever fits, again, not exactly important) 1x Web 1x Scram 1x Large/XL Shield Booster (bear with me)
3x Gyro II 3x BCU II 1x probably a fitting mod
Bunch o' Drones Rigs optional
Da Tankaphoon: 4x Arby siege 4x Heavy nos
Web/Scram/MWD/(spare slot)
1x Badass tank (I don't know the fittings off the top of my head, I'm at work)
More Drones, including ECM drones (medium ECM, heavy damage likely) Rigs optional
The Gankaphoon is designed as fire support for gangs, preferably with the assistance of an Ewar cruiser/frigate (I <3 you, Sensor Damps). The Tankaphoon is designed more for solo activity, which I'm so fond of, in the veins of Ye Old Nosdomi. I'm at an impasse, where I just can't decide what I want to fit my latest trashcan as. Opinons?

Well, as you said, they are two different fits for two different situations. Personally, I think your 'Gankaphoon' would be a decent setup for gangs, and your 'Tankaphoon' could use a cap injector, dual-rep tank
Only suggestion to your gang setup would be to drop a web (if you're flying with support ships) and perhaps throw some form of EW on there as well, be it a TP or a Sensor Damp.

Someone explain to me how people can claim to resist stupid DPS, like "tanking 1200dps lol" with a battleship. With a rig and my current (average) skills, my reps together (LAR II, MAR II) rep about 120-130/s. This seems ridiculously low...

I vote "da tankaphoon". Spending 6 slots on DPS is...wow. I don't think it's worth it, under any circumstances.

I can only think they mean that's the DPS they would have to tank if every shot hit and was at max damage on no resists (like structure without a DC). So it's more like potential DPS.
Unless they mean they have tanked that amount for a short period of time before they either died or killed them.

Major problem with the Phoon is its grid. It's hard to get good damage and a dual rep tank without a gyro. I have experemented greatily for different setups, being nearly maxed in a phoon. Heres what i got:
Duraphoon: 4x Dual 425mm IIs 4x Siege Launcher IIs 1x ECCM 1x Fleeting web 1x Faint 20km 1x Medium Electrochem 1x MAR II 2x EANM II 1x DCU II 3x 1600mm RT 5x ogre II 10x warrior II 3x trimarks
Comes out to over 30,000 armor w/o slaves. This is obviously a camping/baiting setup.
Reppaphoon: 4x Dual 425mm IIs 4x Cruise IIs 1x ECCM 1x Fleeting web 1x Faint 20k 1x Medium Electrochem 2x LAR II 2x EANM II 1x DCU II 1x 1600mm RT/Armor Explosive II 1x TS RCU (must be ts) 5x Ogre II 10x Warrior II 3x Auxiliary Nano Pumps
This has quite a good tank, but ofc hard to fit and doesnt include sieges. Both setups do good dps and have diverse tanking abilitys. Unfortunetly, expensive ships to fit. --- Eris Discordia is miiiiiine

I got a fit going for the Tankaphoon, it looks something like:
4x Arby Siege 4x Nos
1x J5 Warp disruptor 1x Web 1x Medium cap booster (For that emergency wtf moment) 1x Blank (probably a TD)
1x RCU 1x LAR Accomidation (I have a spare TS one, too. ;) 1x MAR II 3x hardener (EX/TH/KI) 1x BCU II
Drones 1x Armor rep time reduction rig
Looking good for now?

That reppaphoon isn't expensive. =P But a great fit. *note*
