So, you've just logged on, and already some corp mates are giving you gang invite and telling you to come join them in some gatecamping/pirate hunting/wartarget killing - some activity with a high propability of putting you in a pvp situation against a roughly equal size gang of unknown composition.
They tell you they have tackling sorted, and a bit of ew and nos drainage, but they need a damage dealer. Obviously you need good dps, with either some range, or ability to get into range quickly as targets pop and new ones are scrammed/webbed, also some amount of durability and cap stability to avoid having to warp out or get popped.
Which ship do you chose, how do you set it up, and most importantly, WHY?

I like my Deimos for this role, its reasonably fast and has a massive damage output that adds alot to any small gang. yes, it is a pretty vulnerable ship, but most things won't last long enough to take you down with it.
For situations involving sentrytanking i'd take my Blasterthron. Killer tank and good dps, true, its not amazingly fast but it has a helluva lot more survivability than a deimos, plus a DPS fit Deimos can't tank sentries at all well. -----

When fitting for gank! -First thing is a MWD. You'll be using close range most damaging ammo so you'll need to get in range fast. (MWD has so many great uses it should be considered hax!) -Use most damaging guns and ammo -Three dmg mods in the lows. -Whatever kind of tank you can fit. Plates or Shield Extenders. -Web, Scram in mids. Cap Booster is nice. Sensor Damps are always fun.

I know how to fit for gank, thank you very much. I'm just curious to see if there will be a general ship class, weapon type, and possibly race trend to the replies

I'd pick whatever non-caldari ship i had in my hang. My preference is Astarte, or if i don't need to tank sentries: myrmidon.

Couple votes for various high-end blaster boats, and a single for the geddon. Anyone else?

Really depends on how small this 'small gang' is. If it's less than five people, I'd say the Megathron for sure. If it's more than 10 people, I'd go with an Armageddon. In between those it's hard to say as it depends a lot on gang composition, what you're fighting, etc.

I wouldn't use a bs unless you got lotsa sensor boosters on it. By the time you lock someone, they'll be 3 quarters dead already. gankarax or gankabrutix are good.

Gallente/blasters are racking up the votes, mainly t1+t2 cruiser/bc size. Ships that haven't been mentioned yet that I imagine could get some votes are harbinger, abso, nighthawk, sleipnir, muninn, zealot, and maybe rupture. Feel free to pick one of the ships that's already been mentioned though, we can all figure out which ships would do decently in the described role, but the interesting point is which one YOU'd pick, and why.

Pulse geddon is always a good ship for pure DPS.

You hit the nail on the head with the Zealot - it's ORF boni with someheat sinks will strip most ships in seconds if you fit beams with multifreq... even scorch will do.
think 'rupture' - i have a ridiculous rupture setup (needs sick fitting skills + a rig or 2... bit its a t1 cruiser so a 30mil rig still keeps it lower than a hac). Try dual nos with 5 t2 lgiths drones and as big AC's as you can fit, With cruiser 5 the DPS output on a ruppy with NO gyro's is enough to make a hooker blush. Fit 2 just to be a sadist.

You said the gang was going for pvp against either pirates, war targets or a gate camp.
What ship you use varies greatly depending on what you're doing.
If you're gate camping, a sniper ship is viable. Or a battleship with long range guns and short range ammo, or a pulse geddon. If my buddies have BS out there I'd use a pulse geddon or a megathron with blasters and longer range ammo. If they are in smaller ships I'd use a rail rax.
If you're roaming and looking for a fight fast ships that deliver good dps are a good choice: deimos, vagabond, munnin, zealot, blaster eagle or for t1 I like pulse rupture and thorax (blasters this time).
If you want to use a close range BS setup for the roaming gangs it's good to fit a i-stab or two and use the longer range of the close range ammo's so you start hitting early on in the fight.

Mid sized, 425mm II Hurricane. If you've got tacklers, 3x LSE II's + MWD in mids make for a good setup. Whatever in lows... I usually go with nanos, istabs, and gyro IIs.

Well,if you've got a tanker you can go full gank on a brutix/myrmidon.
Will give my vote to a Megathron(Close-range if you've got plenty of quick webbers) or Deimos

I have to cast my vote for the pulse gankageddon, seeing as I'm flying one.
Highs: 7x pulse mids: 2x cap rechargers, 1x x5 web lows: LAR, 2 EANMs, 3 heat sinks, istab, CPR ------ Currently Flying: "Righteous Blade XVII" (Armageddon), "Overloaded Monster" (Bestower), "Crazy Ninja PVP IIX" (Vengeance) |

It's starting to look more and more like despite amarr and caldari ships being designed for gang use, while the minmatars and gallente have solo ability, people still prefer to not use amarr and caldari in their strongest roles.. With the slight exception of the geddon

Caldari are not the kings of DPS as missiles, unfortunately, do not do as much DPS overall as compared to guns. However, that bit of ECM you mentioned could very well be a Caldari ship. For DPS, Gallente blasterships and Amarr pulse BSes are sick. Minmatar are better for roving as their DPS isn't quite as strong as Gallente or Amarr, but bet is a fair number of your tacklers are probably Minmatar ships.
That said I'm rather fond of the new Tier 2 BCs for DPS roles. Hurricane and Myrmidon come to the forefront, the latter a little stronger with pure DPS but can lose alot with a few smartbombs or a FoF spammer and the former a tad more on the frail side.

I didn't say ECM, I said EW. Pretty sure most people would rather be in a lachesis than a rook these days. Any fast ship with 3+ mids could grab em so nos myrm or domi could catch up and drain their cap while you kill their hp buffer. When I made this thread I was really hoping for loads of geddon/zealot/abso replies with maybe a few nighthawks/drakes in the mix. But most people go for high end blaster boats.

for DPS Astarte, Eos, Absolution, Zealot, Deimos
for EW: Curse
I prefer either the Zealot with MWD or the Nanocurse. You will want a fast and agile ship for small gangs since the possibility of meeting a superior gang is very high. The Curse is perfect support ship for nos+dampener+damage from drones and the zealot can still deal some dmg while having 1500m/s or more speed and more range flexibility then blaster ships. Scorch can hit quite far and deal nice dmg on shield. when you are in range and the victim is in armor, you switch to conflags.

a) you asked for 'small gang damage dealer'... caldari is not b) autocannon sleipnir or arty muninn is what weirda would bring for that role __ Weirda Nosferatu - Time for Change |
