So... I've been reading around and have only found murky and conflicting answers on this.
Are certain skills required to operate Citadel defense systems? From a dev blog...
" In fact, no existing skill will affect any of the structure hulls, modules or rigs. That means Engineering will not increase powergrid on any of the new Citadels for instance, and that none of the missile support skills will function for the structure missile launchers.
This decision was made on purpose to:
Prevent some poor soul from having to stay forever locked inside a Citadel to provide skill-level related bonuses Narrow the gap between new players and veterans in terms of skill proficiency when assuming direct control of the new structures. We want all players to be able to competitively participate, not require dedicated alternate accounts"
Then...
" We are still going to require a few skills to operate the structures and give few bonuses, but their effects will be limited for the reasons mentioned above.
Structure Missile Systems: increases damage by 2% of all Structure Missile Launchers per level Structure Defensive Systems: reduces capacitor need of all structure defensive modules by 2% per level (not listing specific modules here since most of them wonGÇÖt make it in the first Citadel release) Structure Electronic Systems: reduces capacitor need of Electronic Warfare, ship tractor beam, and bumping modules by 2% per level Structure Engineering Systems: reduces capacitor need of the Doomsday Device and Capacitor Warfare modules by 2% per level"
Then... Reddit link When is (or was) the near future? And how exactly will it be (or has it been) changed?
So whats the case as it stands now? Does a person basically need to be a carrier pilot to operate defensive fighters or can anyone with access to station defenses do it?

CCP says this and give bonus to launchers with skills, completely defeat the purpose... |

If you want to use the drones, you need the skills. So if you not a carrier pilot, you got round 15 days of training to use them. Not sure about the other mods like painters scram etc

CCP rushed Citadels out to meet a deadline point blank since there's various issues with them and tons of bugs still being worked to end resolve..
biggest almost pointless change was to
Structure Defensive Systems: reduces capacitor need of all structure defensive modules by 2% per level (not listing specific modules here since most of them wonGÇÖt make it in the first Citadel release)
which became Structure Doomsday Operation..SPECIFICALLY ONLY FOR THE XL...
now tell me this OP and CCP.
Just how many players already trained defensive to 5 and you switched it to doomsday.. just how many players in the entire game's population will ever have a chance to shoot off a GOD DARN XL Citadel Doomsday!!!
see how much they rushed and didn't think this out.
NO SP reimbursement.. nothing..
just oops no one would think about it.
basically you want a carrier pilot to run a citadel with structure skills and hope for a rather small chance to ever use a doomsday wpn.. forget HS where the XL can be also be placed.. nope.. just waste your time training a skill that you will never ever use.

tbh I don't see why anyone would train any of the structure skills. This is the job of a dedicated alt that would sit his ass all day long in the citadel. Because a citadel need to be maned to operate, it's even worst. |

"All day long" meaning "during the few hours of vulnerability window which I set" |

You can still kill people outside the vulnerability timer, worth it. |

Fighters have a fairly high barrier to entry: First you need drone interfacing at level 5, a rank 5 skill will take about 4 weeks to train depending on implants and attribute mapping. This unlocks fighters which, in turn unlocks light, heavy and support fighters. These are all rank 12 skills. 6 weeks to get them all to level 4.
The structure management skills are rank 2, much faster to train, you can get all of them to level 4 in a week.
Any corporation that anchors a citadel should have someone with these skills who can cover their vulnerability window. |
