Even with target painter and omni directional tracking link these guys cant hit the broad side of a barn door at close range. This includes the garde which has a 20k optimal 10k falloff. anything orbiting at 15k is safe from sentry guns, yet the same sentry (garde) has no problem hitting targets at 35k away..
They have their uses i geusse, and maybe after the nano/stab nerf they will be worth having...
*note* they are useful for farming rats, if left at a optimal range from your bs and as long as u get agro when the rats repop..

dude ! i love sentries. they rock! Have transversal velocity on your overview and target the buggers with the lowest 1st. The other day i got a wrecking shot on a curse of 630 with gardes \o/

Those drones are usefull when you need to hit something really far away and you don't want to wait until your other drones get there.
What are you trying to kill with them anyway ? I use a set of 5 Wardens with my Dominix, and while they can't hit frigates under 25 kms, they do hit BCs and BSs as close as 15 kms from me ... without the tracking module, and those are the "long range" ones, 50kms optimal (67.5 kms with my 5 in Drone Sharpshooting).
But I'm doing lvl 4 missions, and nothing else, I use them to "snipe" the far away groups in some missions, and scoop them to relaunch a set of appropriately sized combat drones when the baddies are too close.

I love Sentries (especially Garde I) i looked at them and thought cool something to keep me interested in Drones While i am Waiting for T2 heavies and Drone Interfacing V to complete.
now i have them i love them they are a great compliment to my Dominix, the best feature is if they start getting hit you are usually right next to them and they scoop instantly plus they have lots of health so they can take a beating, im just waiting for the T2 sentries lol that would be nice, yes i agree they have problems hitting Fast moving Frigs but thats what stasis webs were made for, just fly with an inty or fit the webs yourself then when the thing is slow Paint and destroy.
Anyway if the thing is moving that fast and its a Criuser/Frig pull in the sentries and change to T2 Scouts or Mediums
