No one can help you on that question man, its personal taste. I actually do both with one character. A lot of people focus their characters on one and then create an alt to focus on the other. I'm not a big fan of alts, so I did it all in one. Just set a particular goal for yourself and go for it. When that goal is finished then go after something else, either pvp or industrial. Like tell yourself: ok, i want assault frigates. Then go for that. When that's done you can be like : ok, now i want a mining barge. Then go for that.

To be a good miner requires considerably fewer skills than a combat pilot, I'd say invest some time in mining/refining skills and then do some mining while you train up combat-oriented skills. (not to mention earn enough isk to afford a solid combat ship and mods)

That is not true. Between Industry and Science I have over 12 mil SP invested (and that doesn't even include what it takes to use Exhumers and Freighters and such) and I am still not as trained up in many aspects as I'd like to be there. Saying to train up mining and forget the rest is like saying train guns but don't bother with fitting skills or skills to use certain mods. Mining is just a part of the whole industrialist thing. If you want to PvP then I'd say sure, just train up mining enough to be semi-passable at it. Alway nice to be able to fall back on hugging some Veld in a pinch if you must to earn a few ISK. But if you want to be an Industrialist then it is a significant investment of skills just as training for PvP.
Besides, even an industrialist generally can't totally ignore gunnery and such (need to mission ***** to get NPC standings up for one thing). So a fully rounded Industrialist probably takes about as long to train as a fully rounded PvPer.
As to the OP you just need to try out both and decide for yourself. Getting into full swing in the industrial side of the game can take some doing and many consider it a grind and boring. Others love it and market "PvP" can get pretty involved. Likewise many adore PvP while others want no part. Really just what suits you.

I had the same problem. My first character was an all around guy but it took to long to train any specific thing so I though mining might be good and made an industerialist/mineing character.. Problem was as I got into the bigger ships with better weapons, tractor and salvage beams I discovered I liked ratting and salvaging more although I still can't PVP well. So I started working on weapon skills and have a Harbinger now and I love it but I found out about and started using probes and I really enjoy the probe thing. So I started looking at covert ops stuff but it was going to take a long time for my industrial character to train into that type of thing. SO I went and made a covert ops character but while it would be shorter to train this new character in some areas it would take just as long to train in others for the covert ops role as my current almost 2 month old character.
In short to start just train for something that you like that makes you ISK then branch out in the direction you most like. People like me will take a long time to develope a character because I like alomost all occupations in EVE but I think People like me could have some of the most powerfull characters in the game as far as being able to do anything I want to do well, though it will take a bunch of time. :)
Sorry if I'm rambling a bit, I've had some adult beverage to drink tonight but I have the best of intentions.

Do it all :)
Here comes the list, please scroll onto the next reply if you're easily bored
Gunnery Group: Controlled bursts Gunnery Medium Energy Turret (I fly Caldari and Amarr) Medium Hybrid Turret Motion Prediction Rapid Firing Sharp Shooter Small Energy Turret Small Hybrid Turret Small Projectile Turret Weapons Upgrades
Missile Group: Defender Missiles FoF Missiles Heavy Assault Missiles Heavy Missiles Missile Bombardment Missile Launcher Operation Missile Projection Rapid Launch Rockets Standard Missiles Warhead Upgrades
In Trade I only have two skills so far: Trade and Accounting.
Also, I have Social and Connections for an extra agent standing boost, helps get to lvl 2, 3 & 4 missions quicker.
Ok that's it for my long winded "You can do it all if you want to" post. If you read this far, thanks

I know the problem - been there myself, I went down industrial route.... after a while I got bored and now can easily pay for any warships or gear I need. I trade to make money and throw ships into any melee with *** abandon, cause I can easily afford a new one with either a few minutes or hours trading.

Hooray for EVE training ADD. I feel for you. I'm currently setting a record for time spent on one thing as I'm training up some learning skills (4 days). I do a little of everything as well (mine, rat, salvage, trade, mission run) with PVP being the longterm goal.
