Yesterday evening, a new APEX Unlimited research complex located in a remote region on the surface of Hageken V was destroyed by an unknown explosion. There were over 100 research and development personnel working in the facility when contact was lost. It is unknown at this time whether there were any survivors.
At approximately 23:00 hours, the Caldari Navy station in orbit around one of Hageken V's moons detected an unknown seismic disturbance on the planet's surface. This roughly coincided with a loss of contact with the research complex by APEX's Office of Planetary Affairs. APEX pilots in the area were diverted to the location, where they conducted orbital scans of the facility's location. Preliminary scans revealed high traces of residual thermal radiation indicating a possible large-scale explosion. This analysis was confirmed by visual scans which revealed the presence of a crater several miles wide and scattered with debris.
APEX corporate security has an investigation team enroute, but until they arrive, further information is limited. What we have been able to ascertain is that the explosion was not caused by orbital bombardment or any known natural disaster. An accident within the facility has not been ruled out, but is considered highly unlikely by preliminary analysis. At this time, we believe the most likely cause of the destruction to be sabotage via explosive device.
APEX Unlimited would like to offer its condolences to the families of the researchers, technicians and other personnel working in the facility. In the mean-time, we are offering a 10 million ISK reward for any new, significant information that leads to the discovery and apprehension of the individual(s) responsible for this callous destruction of life and property.
Further information will be released when it becomes available.

Very interesting, very sad. Is there any chance that a Caldari Navy official can substantiate the seismic disturbance, seeing as how they were the first to detect it?

This news is, indeed, very saddening and I offer my condolences to any of the family members. As a small charity, I will gladly donate small amounts of ISK to any family's who need it for funeral expenses or simply staying on their feet, also, I willingly offer transport to any survivors or family members during this time. My Myrmidon is a slow ship, but as I don't really have a crew I have a few hundred free quaters open, many of which arer very nicely decorated.

Our deepest condolences on your loss of such a profitable facility, we hope you will recover swiftly from this financial blow. I would also like to formally state that The Black Rabbits aren't responsible for this atrocity and any evidence suggesting otherwise is false. Any eyewitnesses claiming otherwise are lying. The Black Rabbits have no further comments on this issue.
Have a profitable day, citizens.

woops.
I expect that the subsequent inquiry that should be standard practice in this kind of situation will be independant and thorough
I urge Apex Unlimited to appoint a team of investigators as soon as their forces have fully secured the site and engineers and specialists have ensured beyond reasonable degree that the area is safe
Initial reports seem to indicate some catastrophic failure of safety systems and/or proceedures that ensure their integrity against both accident and more malicious intentions. In this context, is Apex able to comment as to why throughout this project correct consideration to physical and proceedural separation of Testing facilities and other parts of the complex (such as habitation etc.) were apparently not implemented?

What was the nature of the research?
The facility was slated to begin research in several different areas once it was fully online.
I should clarify, however, that research projects had not yet commenced at the time of the destruction. In point of fact, the facility was not even completely online yet - an issue on which I was speaking with the complex manager when we lost contact.
Due to the fact that none of the equipment being installed was volatile on a level to create an explosion of that magnitude, we suspect sabotage.
The investigation team from APEX Corporate Security landed early this morning and have been working to discover the exact nature of the explosion. We hope to have more information sometime soon. ----

Seems like it's pretty dangerous for researchers who don't work for the Megacorps. Sorry to hear about this, and I hope that things in the State change soon.

A sad occasion indeed. My deepest sympathies to all those affected.
If this does, indeed, transpire to be sabotage - presumably on an industrial level but conceivably any level - then I for one would be eager to hear who was responsible, and on what grounds they can justify such an action. I am sure APEX Unlimited would be eager to hear the same.
For myself, I fear this could turn out to be yet another example of the dangers of this closed universe we all inhabit. If we were a universe without borders, without limits, and without such mindless acts of violence, would we not all be able to research, produce, and live in relative security?
I wish you well in your investigations, and anticipate hearing more on this tragedy as it unfolds. -- T Dave

Official Update
Preliminary results from the investigation team have arrived.
Judging from thermal currents and debris patterns, it appears that there were actually seven distinct blast points for the explosion that consumed the facility. Residual elements of radiation seem to indicate six antimatter bombs arrayed at strategic points around the facility and linked to a thermonuclear device in the center of the complex.
Whomever was behind this obviously wanted to make very sure that the facility was completely obliterated.
In addition, our team has recently uncovered evidence pointing to a survivor of the explosion. Subsequent sweeps of nearby medical facilities confirmed this and the individual has been taken into APEX's custody and transported offworld to a heavily guarded medical facility. The patient remains unconscious and his injuries are severe, but our doctors believe he will survive. Hopefully, if he awakens, he will be able to shed some additional light on the case. ----

I take it you were insured against these kinds of things. Surely additional costs will follow, but the publicity you get from this (people picking your products out of sympathy) will soon make up for it.
Shame about the loss of crew though, it's hard to get decent personnel these days.

My sincerest apologies and humble condolenses in regards to your facilities loss in life. Nothing new in my line of buisness but still glad to see you all managed to get the whole affair resolved. If you send me the assailents clone I could have him properly decrypted. Something like that done properly does wonders for an investigation, the likes of which IĈm sure youĈll be launching. Of course a living specimen is much more responsive than a dead one, or a tortured one. If you so wish, have the body delivered and IĈll sweep the brain case.
