Two nights ago I was playing, running a level 3 mission with about 20 large Sansha ships all around a Sansha battle tower (which was the first time I'd seen one of these - they're very cool looking - almost remind me of a puffer fish).
Anyways... I'd just warped in, targeted some enemy ships in different packs and agroed them with my civilian gattling gun (no ammo, agroes from a distance). I then popped out my 5 hammerhead IIs and sic'd them onto one of the NPC ships. While waiting for it to blow up, I noticed I wasn't seeing any damage appear on the ship, and I kept seeing the target locking sequence playing over and over again for a couple ships that I'd started to target.
"Oh damn, disconnected from the server?" I thought to myself, as I started preparing myself to go buy another 11M ISK worth of hammerhead IIs and worried whether my shield, which was at about 85%, would hold. After waiting about a minute I noticed my screen changed slightly, as if my client was trying to sync up with the server, so rather than close my client and try to reconnect I just let it sit. For the next couple of minutes I see minor changes on the screen suggesting my client is still struggling to resync with the server (I ran a ping test and noticed I was getting packet loss due to my ISP). Another minute went by and suddenly I'm seeing a field full of Sansha wrecks and my 5 hammerhead IIs all circling my ship, idly waiting for some other target to go kill, and my shields are back at 100%!
Needless to say, those 5 drones got a nice oil bath that night and I made sure all the shield power relay IIs and field purging rigs had all their contacts dusted and power supplies kept clean. They all saved my bacon even when I couldn't do a thing. :)
It's quite possible that even if I hadn't passive shield tanked my Myrmidon that my drones would have killed off the enemy fast enough that my ship wouldn't have gone poof, but I was basically unable to do anything for about 4-5 minutes, so you never can tell. I'm just happy I had that setup and wasn't at the mercy of having to turn on an armor rep (which I wouldn't have been able to do) in order to guarantee my survival.

The mission you are talking about is called Massive Attack, the part of that mission you are talking about is well easy. There are 4 turrets, 1 cruiser and like 12 frigates....hardly enough to justify a passive tank in my opinion. I do the mission all the time, also in a myrmidon and could probably also kill off everything without even having to turn on my reper.

Sorry, I didn't get my point across as clearly as I intended when I started to write it.
It may be that I didn't need the passive tank in this particular mission (I did mention that in my post)... but I'm glad I've got it in case I'm in some more difficult mission and I lag out in a similar fashion. This is actually the first time lag has adversely affected my play in this fashion since I started playing last summer, so I was quite surprised and very happy that I'll most likely survive any similar occurance in the future. That is the key reason I'm happy with my choice... sorry if I didn't get that point across initially.

ThatÆs saved me a lot of times. One of the major advantages of passive tanks is not worrying about running out of cap during a CTD or worrying about that shield booster/armour repairer activating due to lag.
No matter how laggy it gets you can do missions as a passive tank and not worry. That and with it being so much tougher then an amour tank on a Myrmidon why not passive tank?

I've gotta agree that where missions are concerned passive shield tanking a Myr is the way to go if you can afford rigs. Armor tanking is better if you have a tight budget however.

well rigs aren't all that expensive, if you have done even some salvaging, buying the missing parts and making them is very cheap and the fireld purger BPO costs something like 100k so can't complain about prices and if you start thinking but i need so many skills, you actually don't. Jury Rigging 3 for shield rigs 1 and industry 1 is all you need and a factory line is cheap to use for the about 10 min / rig times
well worth it saving cash compared to buing the 15+M rigs =)

Edited by: Boomhaur on 02/03/2007 04:34:52 Edited by: Boomhaur on 02/03/2007 04:34:25 I got a passive tank drake, and I turn on my missiles an let drones do their thing an finish missions that way. One day I did that an got distracted an I ended up talking to my family, made a sandwhich, watched some TV. And I eventually came back 2-3hours latter to all the rats still trying kill me while my tank rested at 60%.
Gotta love passive tanked ships. (an that was a lv3 missions, cant remember which one though, but it wasnt Massive Attack, an I forgot to deploy drones that time)

You need about 4 to 5 ish amour repairers to equal the HP regen a passive tank has and 5 ish amour repairers donÆt run none stop if you crash out.

no they don't... well sometimes they do but usually they don't.
i was doing missions about a month ago and was doing the second stage of worlds collide lvl4 in my semi faction raven. i can run the booster for about 6 minz easy whit no probs.
so i was doing the mission and agrod the first spwan... killed one BS and them i screen locks up and i crash the game. i had the booster and evrything running and my raven can tank all of the spwans in that stage easy but when i log back in 20 sec later im in a pod. raven insta poped because all of the stuff turned off. that thing goes to passive tank aswell.
its the same effect on your ship when you eject from your ship. all the modules go offline or just dont work untill you board the ship again.
i tested it on the test server... i used 2 drakes and a deimos to do dmg on them.
one drake was uber passive fitted whit all lows and meds extenders and relays and the other one was active :P
both died at the same speed, even tho the passive tank had over 20k shields
well thats my experiance whit stuff like this

I have never had them not stay on, and one of the requirements for my pve setups are that they are for the most part sustainable for exactly that reason. You don't need nearly 5 reps to tank a level 4. 2 is overkill and lasts reliably until I can log back in and fix the situation.

Yeah youÆre right I was speaking bullocks. Its not 5x more itÆs 12x more HP regen as a passive tank. My passive tank has 618.6 HP/s regen. So if an amour repairer is what 50HP/s? ItÆs a lot more then x5. Thats 618.6 with T2 modules, no T2 rigs or officer HP Related modules.

The layout is not too hard to figure out (well, get close to anyway)
Highs: Who cares. Autocannons or Arty would be my choice. The drones do the real damage.
Mids 4x Large Sheild Extender 2s 1x Dread Gurista Inv. Field
Lows 2x Sheild Relay 2s 4x Sheid Relay 1s
Rigs 3x Core Defense Field Purger IIs
Implants 5% extra sheild amount 5% sheild Recharge
In a gang with a pilot in a Vulture with max Siege warfare and Warfare Spec with Siege warfare mindlink.
Where I'm wrong: My shield recharge is to high on this setup by about 1 second and I have 45 too many shield hit points. I suspect that Pottsy is using a PDS II or similar in the lows to boost his cap recharge some.

Can be done with much less skill and expensive parts
2x Invul II 1x Shield Recharger II 2x LSE II
6x SPR II
3x PURGER II
Siege Warfare V, Shield Op V, Shield Management V 5% shield ammt 5% shield recharge
In a gang.

Yes, Pottsey has high siege warfare gang skills and mounts the appropriate module in a high slot. In that screenshot I can tell you for sure that Pottsey has 6x SPR II and 3x core defence field purger 1s, plus the 5% faster shield recharge implant... that is how he gets to the 87.87second recharge time.
As for the rest of his setup, I suspect it is 4x LSE II and 1x invuln field II, and the 5% more shield hp implant. That still leaves the shields about 85% of what he has in his picture and your resists would be lower too... the explanation is the benefit from being ganged with the correct modules activated and the siege warfare skill, but I don't know enough how those bonuses all work out so can't say for sure.

The issue that I see with that is that having 6 SPR IIs doesn't leave enough cap to sustain one invuln field, let alone an invuln and any warfare links.

ôJust curious, why are you guys shield tanking a Gallente ship.ö Its much stronger then amour tanking. As you can see I have x8 to x12 more HP regen as a shield tanker then amour tanking depending on setup. Gallente also invented passive shield tanking so why shouldnÆt they use it?
For those wondering I have T1 purgers. A Dread Invul field as I donÆt own any T2. I didnÆt have a Vulture do gang assist if I did resistance would be higher.
Caps not a problem if you donÆt use turrets but it will run out over time if you donÆt have 1 Nos. If you use turrets, need more cap or want a 24/7 tank setup swap 2 or 3 relays for 2 or 3 PDS. Normally I do PDS and skip Nos.
With 7 relays you have 2.54 cap regen but a 8.3 cap drain unless another ship does gang assist then your cap drain goes down to 3.3.
I used to use drones for damage but have just started this week using railguns as a secondary weapons this means using 3 PDS modules.

I'm sure the gang bonuses come from another ship, probably an alt in a Vulture that has max gang skills.
To be honest, I can whip up something in Quickfit that is better than Pottsey's setup -- the challenge is figureing out exactly what setup he is using.
For example: Highs: Who cares
Mids: 4x LSE IIs 1x Dread Guristas Inv. (I know Pottsey has one of these)
Lows 1x PDS II 5x Sheild Power Relay IIs
Rigs 3x Field Defense Purger IIs
Implants 5% Sheild Recharge 5% Sheild Hitpoints
Ganged w/ vulture w/ mindlink
This build can sustain the Inv field, has 1000 grid spare for NOS / other highs, and has more sheild hitpoints and a faster recharge. Of course, the SPRIIs are pricy as are the Rigs, so I suspect thats why Pottsey's setup doesn't look exactly like this.

I'm pretty sure that its 27.5% with maxed sheild warfare spec in a Vulture. Not 100% sure on that though.
