In light of the recent node crashes due to large fleet combat, I wanted to offer a proposal. Pardons if this has been proposed before.
My suggestion is to have large fleet combat instanced. Both sides of the skirmish would pre-arrange a time when the combat was going to occur. They would provide a maximum number of ships that would be in involved. CCP would prepare a special node based on the number of ships and make it available at the pre-determined time. Ships would enter this node, up to a maximum for each side. The game mechanics for how to enter the skirmish would need to be determined.
One drawback, of course, is that the encounter needs to be pre-arranged. Having not been in any fleet combat I don't know how big an issue this is. It actually seems like it might be beneficial as it would allow both teams to rally people to get online at a certain time.
Perhaps this could be limited to POS / Outpost assault. As in, any assault designed to take down a POS or Outpost would need to be pre-arranged, but other warfare would not.
There are lots of open issues and probably things I have not taken into account in this rough proposal. But do people find the idea appealing? I am positive it would be an easier technical problem for CCP to solve because it removes variability.

I dont like this idea for the following reasons:
It destroys the suprise of battle (intell says there are more incomming friendly ships to help).
It would destroy the concept of eve-online being the biggest non-instanced game.
I hate games which are instanced, If any part of PVP in this game become instanced i would quit. "Death Before Dishonor" |

Edited by: Neuromandis on 02/03/2007 00:25:05 The nice thing in eve that unfortunately torpedoes your idea, is that they are REAL wars. As in, they are not just another form of PvP. If a roleplayer would propose that in character he would simply get the answer "Hey buddy wake up, this is a WAR not a game", meamning that people want to actually fill objectives and damage people, not slug it out for the hell of it (not that this is not an option, but it is usually 5 vs 5 not 500 vs 500 that cause the crashes)
As in misdirection, intelligence, counterintelligence, maximizing damage by picking targets and lots of other Sun-Tzu stuff. It is impossible to do it pre-arranged. Each and every hardcore fleet-player would simply find that 70% of the game died.
The only thing I can see nearing the lines of your idea is maybe notifying in advance a GM that we have a planned op for X system in Y date so that they can dedicate a node or something, counting on CCP for the secrecy of the idea. Of course that runs the danger of EXTRA tinfoil-hatting.

Fine, you can ignore the instanced aspect and instead just make it so that large scale battles are pre-arranged. This would allow CCP to "beef up" a given node before the event. Maybe all POS battles would be pre-arranged, or decide some other determining factor. It does lose a little bit of the spontaneity and real-time aspect of the game, but then again I am not sure if it will ever be possible to build a node that can handle an arbitrarily large number of players logging in at one time and fighting. Sorry.... but you are still suggesting a book to fight scheme. When ops are planned the only people who should know are those doing it. You couldn't inform CCP.... they play the game aswell. When it's war, it's tactical and this means no sharing of info. I suggest just letting this idea go. It's not your fault it's a bad idea, it's due to your lack of fleet combat.

Reading this thread and agreeing with previous answers stating how this would ruin EVE's combat and politics, a variation of this came to me.
How about a new petition class where a fleet commander can send CCP a heads up, reporting there is an offensive planned for systems X, Y and Z in regions or constellations A and B whatever at around Q date and time. Giving CCP the chance to anticipate the extra traffic without alerting anyone not (yet) involved.
