I really want a text based engine for it.
I've played the game for like 3 years. My sound is off, I'm frequently in a window mode, I can play the game almost exclusively by the overview or map, 9 times out of 10 I'd rather the game respond quickly to my controls than show my pretty explosions, etc.
CCP! Give me a terminal based client!
Where's my VT100 anyway?
That would rock. :)

I was thinking the same thing. 
I'm not even suggesting this be the ONLY interface... just a nice stripped down one when I don't feel like all the overhead. Most of the things you might do in game you really don't need the visuals for at all.

You are in an asteroid belt. To the north you see some veldspar asteroids. To the east you see an abandoned giant secure container. There are some guristas pirates to the south.

I never played TradeWars, but that reminds me of waiting until 12:01 to call my favorite BBS to be the first person to play Exitilus and BRE for the day, haha!
2002 sounded so futuristic back then.

Omg, SIGNED! I would love a less laggy thing for fleet battles and missions, as it is I have to run my account with z buffer off, sound off, effects/turret effects off. I wish I could turn missile effects off to :(

See now, what I'm starting to see here is several TRANSLATIONS of my cool idea.
1. "Adventure" Style (Zork for those slightly younger)
In this style you'd have the actual text command interface. If we're being more advanced we could allow semi-colons. For those of you a bit older, XYZZY would return you to Jita.
2. ASCII/ANSII animated text style
In this style we would have small pictures of ships made from ASCII characters. I can't think of a game that did this, though the original old Star Trek and Empire games were fairly similar except that they used a single char to represent another entity.
3. The Basics Style
This was the one I was originally intending. I need the DATA from the game... the overview, chat channels, some kind of text based map that entirely shows things based upon numbers... "systems X jumps from you are [list]".
4. Wireframe
See now these people sorta get the spirit, but not entirely. My point is that the graphics are useless candy and windowdressings! Just get rid of them entirely.
Too funny.
I still want to run it on a VT100. :)

If you're using an ATI video card you can use ATI Tray Tools to tweak your graphics nearly to the point where everything's wireframe.
