Please pardon the noobish questions, but I want to make sure I understand this scam.
Is it a scam becuase the buyer makes a bid at the start bid price and then since no other bid will be made it ends up selling at the start bid price?
As the auctioner, is there no opportunity to cancel an auction once it has been set up?
Anyway, really sorry to hear you were scammed Marmite, I hope you won't let this push you from the game.

You won't see this after next Revelation upgrade patch. They are disabling private outside corp contract and numerous other stuff.
Many people are unfamiliar with the new system and lack firm common sense. Why putting up an auction when you can do item exchange? Why enter 1 mil in any box when you have agreed for 100 mil (examples)?

No Eve-O patch or fix will stop you being gullible, so blaming CCP is pointless. --------------------

a. Why is this in new citizens Q&A? b. There's been so many threads about this scam - why are people still falling for it? c. Don't blame CCP for your own mistakes d. Don't clog up the petition queue with crap
I think that covers it.

Firstly, for all you idiots flaming this guy, there is no instructions for the contract system on what things to avoid. It is new and it is being abused.
Scamming certainly has gone too far in this game, especially with the ability to get RL currency out of the isk you scam from people.
EvE is going down hill with the dumb **** that people, and even GMs, are getting away with.
It's nice to see what CCP thinks of the new players who are just trying to learn the game. It's a shame really.

a. Stop being abusive b. He's not a new player c. Contract system is not new either d. As previously stated, theres loads of threads about this scam on the forums. Or maybe the OP is one of those people who never reads the forums, except to whine about their own lack of knowledge. e. Its up to YOU to protect yourself from scams. CCP is not your mother

Edited by: Marmite Toast on 04/03/2007 15:01:59 There is no tutorial for the contract system CCP just dont bother there too busy giving out t2 bpo's to there alliances to take the game out of beta.
Yes ive played for two years but Ive never had anything to do with contract system, ive pnly ever needed to repro my t1 items and I keep all my other items. I only used direct trade and wish id carried on that trend since CCP leave gaps in there system to be exploited.

Oh stop it with the bitter BPO nonsense and trying to blame your mistakes on others.
You fell for an auction scam that's been around for ages, because you chose to ignore the many threads about it over the past few months. If someone tried it on me, I'd laugh at them. Why? Because I use the available information to protect myself.
If people like you didn't fall for this stuff, the scammers wouldn't bother trying it. Therefore, it is actually your fault that these scams exist, and you are the reason that I have to put up with people trying these lame scams on me.
I'll forgive you - just stop posting rubbish and move on.

Really, I mean if you were selling it for a normal price I could almost understand you falling for that due to: a)Not being familier with the contract system and b)Only ever going on the forums to whine and not read up on what people are doing.
But someone offering 66% more then what an item is worth at a selling price with a pretty decent margin, should make every single "It's a scam" alarm bell ringing. Ah well crap happens.
On a compleatly unrelated note, it's that time of year for the national wallet self-audit. I am one of the unfortunate few who's task it is to check a small percentage of the countries wallets to make sure everything is in order and people are filling out the self-audit forms correctly. I am new to Eve (6-7 weeks old) and didn't know about this one. So I'm glad it got highlighted in the New Citizens forum.....having done some research it does look like this scam has been around a while and we all need to be wary.
I'll certainly be very careful before doing any sort of contract or exchange.
I'll continue with my RL motto - if something looks too good to be true....it probably is.

Afew weeks ago someone offered and bought a faction mod for 150% of what it was worth so yes I was inclined to believe him. Ive been scammed fair and square but I hopefully wont be so retarded the next time.

Morale of the story, never ever leave an opening in any of your dealings that COULD be used to rip you off. Whether that is a high collateral for a trivially looking mission (either you won't have docking rights or there is a "surprise" waiting for you at one of the chokepoint gates to it), a trade in a specific location in space(pirates) or anything else that looks lucrative, but requires you to put some trust in a complete stranger. As a rule of thumb, sadly, no one can be trusted in EVE until they prove otherwise.
