I'm planning to get myself a laptop soon. It should have all the following qualities:
1) A good Core Duo processor. Not the top, ultra-expensive ones, but at least 2Ghz.
2) 2 Gigs of RAM, preferably. 1 gig minimum.
3) It must not come with Vista. I don't want to have to pay 300 dollars extra for an OS I will wipe.
4) It must have very good battery life. 12-cell batteries are acceptable. I want something where when I turn on a movie, the battery life doesn't drop to 20 minutes .
5) It must have a mid-end graphics card. I don't want a 7900 or 8800; if they even make those for laptops it would likely cut the battery life in half. However I need something at least as good as a 6600 or the like so that I can play games.
6) Preferably, it shouldn't be from a ripoff company like Alienware/Falcon NW. I wouldn't be able to afford it, and I'd be paying for a brand.
I don't want a Dell or crap like that, and my cost limit is around $2000, though I might be willing to go a bit over.

You could give RockDirect a try, their laptops are built with modular components allowing you to upgrade, and its the only other company I know of bar Falcon NW who make them to order.

Looks pretty good, and they offer the 7600 Go which looks decent.
One thing I'm not sure about is how much shipping to the US would cost. And they don't offer a "no operating system" option... which would be nice and save money, but no big deal. Whatever operating system comes with it, I'm probably going to wipe it and install TinyXP.

For brands I'd recommend Acer. Got one of their laptops back in October and been very happy with it. In fact I believe they recently became the 2nd biggest seller of Computers in Europe, replacing DELL.

One of the things Dell do rather well is make laptops, usually with a decent warranty. You might seek to compare those people suggest with the dell offering. I've always been pleased with my dell laptop, which is now 18 months old, but still runs the newest breeds of software reasonably well.

I've helped a number of people buy Dell laptops.
I have yet to see one that didn't die or otherwise require an RMA within the first 6 months.
They're horrible pieces of junk. And they're overpriced, too.

If you do find something DS, please tell me as I'm looking for something with pretty much the same specs as you.
I know you hate dell, but you can get a nice laptop 2gigs ram, 2ghz core 2, 256mb ATI at $1600 canadian. ________________________________

The card you're referring to is the "X1400 HyperMemory", a piece of mediocre crap that uses shared system memory. It appears the 7900 GS, the only other option, costs 200 bucks more.
But the specs aren't half bad. Their price seems to come out roughly equivalent to or a bit less than Rock, but the shipping might be a lot cheaper.
And since they do have a pretty decent warranty, I can always RMA it 5 times if need be

Ah sweet, this one here looks great. There's a similarly specced 17.1" one for the same price, but its nearly 10 pounds--way too much IMO.

What is TinyXP?
nLite is a great program. It lets you slipstream all updates/service packs into the install, and remove unnecessary parts of Windows XP.
TinyXP is a downloadable, pre-optimized version (and thus technically illegal, of course, as its pirated) that's only 200 megabytes in size. It installs in under 8 minutes.
I'm probably going to make my own with nLite rather than using the pirated version, but I'll use the same name

If you're a control freak like I am, and just have to have your Seagate HD, Atheros card, Artic Silver and whatnot, I suggest a barebone laptop. A 12" screen will be too small if you'll want to play games, but a 14" and 15.4" will suit you. Be sure to spend the $150 some dollars on a big battery. And also get a glossy reflective screen, they give you much better colors. Asus as far as I know makes the highest quality barebones.
I'm just gunna throw some model numbers at your now ...

Falcon NW has been in the premimum pc business forever. They're the only ones today that do have experience and expertise to put into every pc they build. Every other boutique builder is a copycat that is capitalizing on the gaming pc market. I'll pass on the shiny plastic alien shell of a case thank you. If I ever buy a prebuilt computer, it would only be from Falcon NW. Of course, I'd still be paying dearly for it, but at least I'm getting something I can't make myself.

Far too expensive for the specs.
Anyways, I've ordered the Asus one. 15.4" screen, 3.1kg, 2GB of RAM, 160GB hard disk, 2Ghz CPU, 4 USB ports, built-in webcam, DVD combo drive, built-in card reader, ethernet, modem, wireless, bluetooth, GeForce Go 7700... its quite a beast

Looks pretty good - I have to admit I'm tempted, though of course I couldn't possibly justify getting one
At the current exchange rate, I could get one of those for under ú950 including shipping... ------

I just got a Pegasus 665 laptop from Rock, as another poster mentioned above. It is utterly great As you say though, not sure if they will ship to the States, but their customer service is second to none. Their support forum is always well populated by support guys and they seem very helpful. --
