I don't get this at all...
Some poor player posts his frustrations and his thread gets inundated with 'Can I have your stuff?' responses.
I know I am about to teeter on the edge of the rules here... Is this not trolling? I see these posts as exactly that, they are an attempt to toss sarcasm and flame into a thread, why do the mods not moderate these posts out?
(see, I am on the edge of moderation here) I would like to see some discussion from the people that do not troll the forums asking other players that are obviously upset to hand over their in-game items to some forum troll.
Keep it civil, and no I am not quitting over trolls, I just cannot stand it personally.

A serious responce.
A lot of the time someone is venting their frustration on the forums about something, they are basically saying they are not enjoying the play because of some game mechanic / action / play style / screen colour / font / button in the wrong place.
The majority of the CIHYS quotes can therefore be interpreted as "why dont you go forth and multiply then"
Oh and by the way, Ill be happy with just your BPOs, the other trolls can have the rest of your stuff.

It's a rhetorical question. It's the same thing as saying "you are whining.. please stop."

"Can I have your stuff?" is an age old tradition of dealing with people who rant and say they're leaving an online game.
No, it's not trolling. It's a way of life on any online game's forum.

I am guilty of alt posting... with my macro kill alt :/
Forum Firefox bugs FTW...
ANYHOW, I don't get it personally. I would see explaining to the person why things are the way they are, and why things are not perfect... instead of asking them for their in-game items.
Sorry, I personally see it as trolling. I would love to know the opinion of a forum mod or two.

Actually it's a way of people saying that they don't believe you, that they think you're being a drama queen and that the poster isn't going to leave at all.
It's very childish and contributes absolutely nothing to a discussion.... but hey, welcome to the EVE forums where reasonable discussion, community spirit and honest debate are distant memories ;)

to be fair, its a backlash against the equally childish "give me what I want or I'm leaving" type posts that plague online gaming of all sorts.
Whilst it *is* pure trolling imo, it is understandable. --------------------------------------------

Yes, it's trolling.
Why is it done? because We Don't Care
Why the hell should we give a flying wossname if somebody's decided to quit the game. His/her decision not to continue to play EVE has no effect whatsoever on the rest of us, and the fact that they've come on the forums for the sole purpose of *****ing and moaning about a game most of us really love, and is furthermore egomaniacal enough to assume that we care what they do with their life is, frankly, irritating in the extreme.
So "can I have your stuff" is a good way of knocking people down a peg. it says "We don't care that you're quitting. We never even knew that you existed before now, and now you're leaving? WHO CARES?! I sure as hell don't! You can go play WoW, I really don't care, your absence from the game in no way damages my own game experience, and might even benefit me! Furthermore, I really didn't need to hear YET ANOTHER voice trying to tell me that the game I love and play more than any other is crap. So go ahead and quit man, and while you're at it, wire me your isk and contract the rest of your stuff to me! I'll see it's put to good use. You go have a nice life. JUST GO AWAY AND STOP TRYING TO RUIN MY ENJOYMENT OF THE GAME IN THE PROCESS!"
... yeah, "can I have your stuff?" kind of condenses that entire rant down into five little monosyllables. nice and easy. ***

I don't see it as discussing moderation, at least from most angles. I am asking for moderators to comment on their opinions on this thread.
If they *DO* lock the thread for what they see as discussion moderation I would not be offended, this is borderline moderation discussion.
I fail to see why other players see the need. I get on people for the 'stupid n00b' comments too. Instead of helping new players, we flame them and call them names, and when they get frustrated we ask them to hand over their items.
We, as older players seem to be hostile to newer players or just other players in general.

If somebody says he quits because he started to dislike something in EVE too much, or just threatens to quit EVE because some random injustice or anything like that... well, the "Can I have your stuff" line is probably the most appropriate response if you feel his problem does not warrant a quit threat, or simply don't believe he will quit at all. It's also a pretty valid response if he says something to the extent of "I have to quit because I can't play anymore and I have no friends in-game so no clue who to give my stuff to" (like that's ever the case, but who knows). Of course, it CAN be used as a joke, especially if you agree with above poster or, well, know him personally and never even think he'd want to quit. In the correct circumstances, it can even be somewhat funny. But honestly, not that often.
But when a player voices an actual concern, and doesn't threaten to quit because of that but simply asks for a solution soon... then a "CIHYS" (and not much else) is just pure trolling and should be deleted/moved/warned/whatever. _ MySkills | Module/Rig stacknerfing explained |

I have not had that happen, but EVE being a mostly PVP game instead of flaming them, educate them. (Not saying you flamed anyone)
I have had newer players tell me that they simply cannot compete with me and call me a griefer. I kindly inform them that they are more than welcome to send in a petition if they feel this way, and that I am sorry they feel this way, and good luck in playing EVE.

It's a way of mocking someone who's quitting, basically reducing their departure to an opportunity for free stuff - basically saying that they're so unimportant and their leaving so uneventful that their 'stuff' is more important to preserve ingame than they are.
Also, sometimes you get some free junk out of it. Win win. ___

The first time I read 'Can I have your stuff ?' on EVE-O boards I misinterpreted it. I interpreted it as in: 'Wtf are you smoking ? Can I have your stuff ?' Perhaps because those posts ar often weird. Took some weeks, until I got that right.

"Can I have your stuff" has been around for a long time through various online gaming venues. No, its not origional, however it does sum up the general response to the, "Fix 'buggeditem_no1" or I'm leaving! /wrists" posts.
While I have never personally used that phrase, IMO it can essentially be translated into:
"Guess what "whiner_no8635," Your childish 'threats and demands' on a game forum mean less than jack to us, so if all you have to contribute to the community is whining and complaining don't let the door hit you on the way out."
Take two title threads for example:
1. "That's IT, its a Slap in the FACE CCP! I QUIT!!"
2. "Has anyone else been experiencing this REALLY irritating issue?"
With those two examples you can almost visualize what the content and replies are going to be. So if someone really wants to try and be heard about an issue/bug, leave the threats and hostility out of it.
While I do believe the "Can I have your stuff" is far from origional, I doub't it's going anywhere because it really does sum up the entirety of the communities emotions when someone attempts to make threats to get their own way.

True and many of those posting " I Quit" threads do it for the attention they get from them, and no intentions of actually quitting, thats just as bad imo.

So to summarise, if someone threatens to leave that doesn't effect the rest of us? I do believe lag effects all of us. You get the point?
Each circumstance is different.

here's a bit of free advice, arguing on the internet about basically anything is pointless, I find people argue about something when they have a guilt complex over it or something and are trying to feel better about it. I find that if you don't agree with someone, or a way of behaving, it's far better to come to your own conclusions/understandings then keep it all to yourself and focus on something else which you enjoy, stuff getting bogged down in *****slap arguments. If someone is trolling, so what, it's just a stupid forum on the internet. If you think the OP has a valid point, then respond constructively, if you think they are a fool, ignore them. Unfortunately as the player base in eve is much older on average than most other mmo's i've played, the people behind the trolls probably have well developed white-fat-male psychological issues and it's best to simply ignore them, and avoid talking/responding to them at any cost.

Yup, a few times. But generally from people who were genuinely leaving the game, and leaving in a good mood at that, just not those angrily ranting because they suck and will be back playing in a months time.
Although I've still gotten stuff off the angry ranty types. Unexpected but welcome. I've been doing it for a long time though - over a decade, in many different games - even asking in those without stuff to give. It's just a habit I guess. ___

Although I've still gotten stuff off the angry ranty types. Unexpected but welcome. I've been doing it for a long time though - over a decade, in many different games - even asking in those without stuff to give. It's just a habit I guess. ___

Also, sometimes you get some free junk out of it. Win win.

Originally by: Crydawner here's a bit of free advice, arguing on the internet about basically anything is pointless, I find people argue about something when they have a guilt complex over it or something and are trying to feel better about it.

So, you're feeling guilty, then?

Why is it done? because We Don't Care
But if you don't care......then why post at all? Same goes for IBTL, Go back to WoW and all the other stuff people post just to see their name in lights
Exactly. A more effective way of dealing with these "I Quit" whine posts is if no one responded at all and ignored them. If you really wanted someone like that to know they were never very important to the community if the first place, you just ignore their rants. The longer and more long winded their whine post, the more idiotic they would feel for typing all that out when no one is responding or paying attention.
"CIHYS" is sort of getting old anyway. It is starting to make the people who use it look like keyboard monkeys because one guy says it and five others use it after him in the same thread......yawn.
