So I spend a fair amount of time probing around for abandoned stuff. Find a fair bit too.
But one think I keep finding is what looks like empty pods. What's up with that?
The item appears in scan results as "capsule" just like a naked pod pilot would. When you warp to it, it's just sitting there. The description is "standard capsule" and it generally has a name: <player name's> Capsule.
These capsules have a "board ship" option. If you use it, you leave your ship as per normal and appear in space in what seems like your own pod. When you dock, you've got no option to "leave ship" and when you reboard a ship, there's nothing left behind.
You cannot scoop a capsule so far as I can tell. (I can't swear I've tried it in a large enough ship.)
Is this some artifact of game history, from a time when players could eject from their own pods or some strange stuff like that?
Adding to the strangeness, I once saw a contract advertising a capsule for sale. Guy wanted mucho ISK for it and claimed it was a collector's item. But I can't figure how he collected it.
Can anybody shed any light on this mystery?
Thanks!

The capsules in contracts, that's easy... "leave ship" (you get a capsule), then clone-jump, come back to station you clone-jumped from in a normal ship, there you go, a "free" capsule.
The capsules in space however, that one I'm clueless too. Maybe you can load them in a carrier corporate hangar and eject them in space ? Now, why would you do that, no freaking clue. Or maybe when you self-destructyour pod (to jump to wherever your medical clone is, a bad habit I sometimes use too ever since I got a few "empty" jumpclones available) you don't get a "corpse" in space, but a capsule ?

You used to be able to keep pods when you switched from one to a ship and you also used to be able to eject from them (into another pod).

Ah, Ikvar, that's what I sort of suspected. So if someone ejected from a pod in space, they'd leave an empty pod behind.
Thanks both for the info! ------------------ Ironfleet.com Proposal: Automated Ore Return Vehicles |

When you scan a ship in a system that is out of range, you right click it and they will all say "board ship". This doesnt mean its empty.

Kaemon, true enough. But these show you the "board ship" option when you right click on 'em from 2km away, and let you "board" when you do. ------------------ Ironfleet.com Proposal: Automated Ore Return Vehicles |

Haven't confirmed it yet, but it seems that sometimes when people eject right as the ship explodes, it spawns an empty pod along side the real pod.

More then a year ago we had a pod sitting outside a station in Detroid. We asked him (i think it was birdog) if he is alright. Took us about 15 minutes to find out he was not online anymore.
There was a bug where a clone jump left your pod behind if you went stuck on the jump so you had to close your client. That one was fixed quite some time ago.
Maybe the pods you found are really old or that bug is back.

I can confirm that it was possible months ago. It used to happen to me when I was caught by two HACs in a belt. I ejected just before my Thorax exploded and warped away. For those who wonder why: the logic here is that the attackers might lose a few seconds until they can scramble your pod and you do not suffer as much from the "Your ship explodes" lag until you can warp away. Later I was informed that my pod was still in the belt, even went over to look at it. Someone (from TwinCorp IIRC) even tried to ransom it a few weeks later. It was hilarious. Her: "Pay now." Me: "Huh? Why?" Her: "I have your pod scrammed in Aulbres." Me: "What? I'm docked at the moment several jumps away?"
In retrospect I should have smacked her for not watching local or something, or have her suffer the standing hit (if there is one) .
Even if the bug was fixed there might still be some pods floating around from that time.
