I've noticed that the prices of a lot of moon materials have dropped to unprofitable levels in the last few months. What's going on? Did devs add more rare materials or something, or has everyone just gotten into the moon harvesting business?

My guess would be everyone sells what they have to get every bit isk, its war time you know. And with a large number of people moving from 0.0 to empire they bringing all suplys with them. Mineral prices will down soonish as well.

yeah, i also think they don't make much sense at the moment ... rarity 16 moon ore below fuel cost ? And that especially with the outlook on the fixed invention and the possible spike in t2 materials ...

I would think that "fixed invention" would create higher demand for the T2 materials.

I haven't messed with moon mining in quite a while, but have recently been doing some research on the numbers. I was also surprised to see all the raw materials out there selling for much less than production costs. The reason I believe is sovereignty.
Alliances are putting up POSs for sovereignty, not to mine moons. They would pay for the fuel anyway, by mining whatever the moon has they can at least offset the costs.

Firstly,
Use amarr towers for moon mining. Why? they cost less to run.
I was looking at using a minnie tower and it would have costed me 2-3million more a week, just for a small tower.
right now it only appears to be profitable if you can at least get a simple reaction with a 32 rarity.

Kinda off topic, but now I'm curious...
How do you know what the "rarity" is? is it computed or do certain minerals have a certain rarity associated with them?

Edited by: Kruugore on 10/03/2007 01:06:43 I don't know personally,
I've just read from other sources and guides.
But rarity does not always equal higher price since people are more likely to mine a rarer mineral.
Groups of rarity, from lowest to highest.
Atmospheric Gases Evaporite Deposites Hydrocarbons Silicates
Cobalt Scandium Titanium Tungsten
Cadmium Vanadium Chromium Platinum
Caesium Technetium Hafnium Mercury
Promethium = $$$$$$$ Dysproisium = $$$$$$$ Neodymium Thulium

See we mine Neodymium, an apparently rare moon mineral. but in fact if you look at the reactions it is needed for and the whole T2 production tree, it actually ends up in very few components I believe.
I guess if we take the view that most big 0.0 alliances
a). Hold most of the T2 BPO's b). Hold lots of space and .: have lots of POS producing moon minerals
we can safely assume that everyone not a part of someone's supply chain is wasteing their time. Especially when 0.0 alliances dump spare stuff onto the market

Is this a reasonable analysis?

Thanks for the insight, Anderi. I think you are probably right. Not only are they going to put up POS anyway, but they only need 75% of the fuel if they have soverignty. It's a bit hard to compete with people willing to take a loss AND only using 75% fuel unless you're the same.

This is only going to be true to an extent though. The number of systems where alliances need to hold sov at any cost(i.e. station systems) are few compared to the total number of systems. ---- AUS Corp Lead Megalomanic |

CCP've done for moon minerals what they did for the T1 market: created a supply from people who do not set out to supply these items and thus do not care about the price. -
If you go into your options menu, there's a difficulty slider. Put that all the way over to the easiest setting and you'll be fine. |

Yes utill they fix inventions. Once people outside of the big alliance can benefit from invention and production of t2, need of t2 components and materials will increase and there will be normal market - big number of buyers and small volumes
