One of the things that I hate about Eve is the fact that we can only see things as "real ships".
Makes for nice eye candy, but also makes things nearly impossible to quickly identify in combat without a lot of clicking around. During which time, you get wtfpwned. It encourages mistakes.
Why don't they come up with an alternative combat display, that shows other ships as NTDS icons (Naval Tactical Data System)? You would have an instant identification of ship type, and a pointer off of the icon that showed relative vector.

The pic doesn't tell you anything unless you're very familiar with all of the ships. It's also hard to distinguish between some variants by that little thumbnail. I agree it's not "hard", but it's also needlessly difficult for newer players.
Can't be too difficult to even include some very short textual abbreviations to denote ship class and role. Like "F" for Frigate, "FI" for Frigate - Interceptor, for instance.

The vector pointer is what I really want - tells me the direction and rough speed in relation to me.

Now put 30 ships on the screen. That's 30 clicks.

Perhaps another overview column containing the information I suggested above, or the ability to add the abbreviation to the existing ship icon column (the one that shows the various-sized brackets).

Still no vector information...

Thing is, that would be a GUI change.
I'm sort of convinced now that there's a separate "GUI Cell" to work on the GUI, so I'm no longer waiting for all the DirectX 10 stuff (by an "X10 Cell"), and the walking in stations stuff ("Wolf Cell"), and the new missions system ("Rats Cell"), and the need for speed initiative ("Pimp Cell"), and the factional warfare stuff ("War Cell") and the critical gameplay fixes ("Bug Cell") to get done with before someone touches the GUI.
But getting the damn overview alone to work without hitting tab-tab every second warp seems to be a mind-numbingly huge effort. I think every new feature they added to it triggered at least two or three patches till it worked smoothly again. And It's not only the overview that could do with a little love (combat sounds, the damage messages, modal dialogs, font sizes, chat user lists etc.), so uh, I'm not exactly holding my breath.
But here's to hope. Give the GUI a little love.

I'd love to relegate the overview to a navigation aid instead of its hybrid HUD/Nav functionality now. A customizable HUD would be great since, as the OP mentioned, the speed of combat requires pilots to identify more about a target or several targets than simply that they are locked or not. We shouldn't need to take our eyes off the "center of the screen' to look at a list and then correlate the two. Size, vectors and other info should be a toggle state.
If your job in a fleet is to go after tacklers it should be a simple matter to have frigate symbols stand out in the HUD as larger symbols or flashing colors for instance.

Edited by: Palitir on 09/03/2007 21:02:17 You can set it up so that if you hover over the square on the screen it gives the name of ship.
All you need to do is learn the ship names and which classes and tactics they use .. then your sorted on the ship front.
The square boxes also help somewhat =)

If it already existed in the past, they're fired. If they're new, whip them more please.

You can turn on the "size" column to quickly see what class the ships are.

Easy, now you only have to memorize the 140+ different ship names in EvE.

It's surprisingly easy. Except for that small subset of ships noone ever flies (do YOU know what an Onieros is? I do.)
