Why does the pilot name appear in the overview and not the ship name? In real space you could find the ship name long before you could the pilot. Why bother to name the ships at all? I think it should be switched. Ship name in overview and pilot's name in info.

I see the ship name whenever i use the scanner. And the pilot name appears because surprisingly, if everyone named their ship "Steve" it would be impossiable to call targets.

We name our ships so we can distinguish them from others. In ship maintenance bays all ships are lsited under their name. Now if there are 2 Ruptures there, how could you say which one is yours and which one belongs to your corp mate?
Or you have 2 Battleships of the same type, one set up for ratting, one for fleet engagements. Their name tells you which one in your hangar it is.
That is why we name our ships.
And your argument about having the ship name on overview is lame... Did you ever been in "real space" in a "real ship"? No. It's because someone (CONCORD?) decided that all ships' information devices give this information to anyone who cares.

Its also fun to make names to our ships.
I dont know who named my Typhoon or did i do it. But its Pentium 120Mhz. So i keep it that way.

And the ship name appears on the wreck now, which is cool.

And this is a bad thing because..

Just having shiptypes in overview might be too much info for small gang skirmishes though. Local sucks. Scanners give too much info. -Reprocess-
Maybe ships should have to register a number/name with Concord if they want to operate in Empire. Changing the name should be a more convoluted process. Names like "Thorax" should be snapped up by central db within nanoseconds. Names could just revert to "<Name>'s Thorax I" depending upon how many they own as a default setting.
Reregistering names could be done by expensive and perhaps quasi-legal means for nefarious things.. like smuggling gear when you have a bad Gallente border patrol rep. (Yes, I know this doesn't exist.) But it shouldn't be possible in space. The scanner should be weakened generally though, especially on normal and most T2 ships.
Seeing unique shipnames on overview would be totally badass, even if some people use random letters/numbers.
Would be cool if ships had histories, perhaps if all killmails were tagged in the show info as a line item. I'm not a big fan of a central killmail db by any means, even though I like bragging rights. Showing a couple kills on a ship won't have the same effect as kb point grinders. It would suck if people became collectively afraid to take on inadequate odds because they were afraid every loss would show up forever. Those people suck, and their attitude is infectious.
Maybe it wouldn't have to be the default, but I would like to see it as essential to have that column toggled to call primaries, or just tags. I see no reason to make the whole primaries thing easy except that hp is always being made higher to compensate. Would be more interesting to make focus fire carry a penalty. Short range vids without focus fire are the best.
