Alts are a fixture for MMOs. They give people the chance to explore different avenues of play than what they originally committed themselves with. The idea in itself isn't hurting the game. It's the way CCP has executed it, namely separating account identity completely from character identity.
I've always thought that Guildwars got it right by linking all characters in an account when it came to guilds and stuff. Something like that could do wonders here.

ALL-CAPS POSTS RUIN THE GAME
So I won't make one.
Think you could, oh I don't know, explain what you're complaining about? I don't see any way it ruins the game. Convince me. ----------

Ban people from same IP's? Somehow, I doubt that would work very well. Especialyl since I play in the same house as another EvE player, on the same network, and then we wouldn't be able to play anymore.
I don't understand you concern about alts? Why does it ruin the game?

Alts ruin the game because that alt does stuff that could only otherwise be done by ANOTHER PERSON (!!!) OMG (runzor away plz, actual teamplay has been suggested, message will now self-destruct etc) -
If you go into your options menu, there's a difficulty slider. Put that all the way over to the easiest setting and you'll be fine. |

ok for those dumb people, alts are used for macromining, cheating and scamming, spying in corps, pirating on a pvp account and trading on another

Well, if it were ip based, it would cut out anyone who has a home network with multiple people who enjoy playing eve. They wouldn't be able to play at the same time.
It would cut out a great amount of money from CCP seeing that I'd bet 90% of the player base has at least one other account.
Plus, you didn't even give a reason why you believe alts are ruining the game. Are you mad cause your gate camp was scouted before someone jumped in? I'm confused how multiple accounts could have any effect on your personal game.
No... this whine wasn't thought out at all and you should really consider thinking about your posts before you make them.
It would be quite funny if you were indeed an alt.

I have no belief that such an idea has ever been seriously considered by CCP. Were it to, many people would quit, as many of us live in multi-eve player households (4 of us here actually). I don't even want to consider the havoc that would wreck on people playing from dormitories.

I agree that in many ways alts do damage to the game, they make spying and the like to easy, giving a great reward for no real risk.
All characters on the same account should be in the same corp.
All characters sharing the same network/IP address should be in the same corp.
This would eliminate a lot of the problems currently plagueing EVE. It would mean additional programming on the devs part and I'm not sure how much time it would take to code.
The problem would be folks that travel a lot, as their IPs/Network would change a lot.

Let's not forget the people sharing IPs, who would be screwed.
And travelling has nothing to do with it. Switch your router off an on and you'll get a new IP.
This is, all in all, an utterly ignorant suggestion, and people should stop repeating it. -

Turning your router on and off does not change who you use for an ISP. You are thinking of IP address and even that doesn't happen if you have a static one. Der der der!

Unfortunately, due to the way EVE is designed, you NEED alts to do a lot of things (I have 4 accounts myself).
You need main alts for: 1. PvP (must specialise in that and is not able to make much money) 2. Money making for PvP character (often a mission runner) 3. Hauling/mining/refining/building (takes a long time to train the skills, so can't do so on other mains)
In addition, you need disposable alts for: 1. Scouting stations to see if it is safe to undock, even in empire (since you can't see outside from the dock) 2. Scouting low-sec 3. Jumping through gates (since you can't see what is on the other side) 4. To post anonymously on the forum so some idiot doesn't war-dec you because you proved him to BE an idiot.
So in general, main alts are used so you can experience different aspects of the game, and disposable alts are used where game mechanics makes it impossible for you to detect danger. I don't see this changing, tbh.....

I disagree, I find alts useless. All you need to do is use one character and have that character train up the skill you want. One single character can be a pvper, miner, salvager, builder, essentially an everything. Plus, this way, all your money is pooled to one character and you don't need to bother with flip flopping the training. As for disposable alts, well, thats an exploit in my eyes but by CCPs rules it's not. I just find it....well, cheap.

stuff...
This is why alts sucks they can be used as a risk cutter i personally hate it when i see lots and lots of alts flying around in low sec, 0.0 scouting and such, if you want to find out if its camped check the map damnit, if youre in a war and dont want to undock stick to youre corp mates. Nerf alts! one main per account.

I didn't start playing to my Main's attributes until I was probably 10m SP into the game. I was trying to hammer out a PvP char into an industry/science build. But thanks to a second account i have a character with, more or less, the highest possible perc and will and ever since then my Eve experience has been great. It's not so much my alt as it is just a second account. I can't call either primary. While it it lame to hide behind alts in newbie corps, you can't take them away because the do more for the game for more people.

Very true. The way the game is set up, you always need to do things in groups, alts make it possible to actually "solo" a bit. Nothing wrong with them... ___ P.S. Post with your main. Mind control and tin hats |
