-------------- Item name: Writable Data Chip Item description: "This writable Data Chip is ready to be written to." Mass: 0,1kg Volume: 0,1m3 Required skill: Science I, Data Writing I Base price: 25'000 ISK
Specil actions: *Right-click Item* > Menu > Assemble *Right-click Item* > Menu > Set Password (Read below about this)
-------------- Skill name: Data Writing Rank: 1 Skill description: Enables the user to learn how to set a password to the chip at level 4. Base price: 70'000 ISK --------------
If you have the skill trained, when 'Assemble' is clicked, a window pops up where you can write what you want into the chip as well as a title (which will be the name of the item). You can also put in links to items and such; whatever you can do in a chat. Even text-decorating (wtfbbqpwnrox!!1). You can use a maximum of 4000 characters in it. When you click 'Finish' at the bottom of the window, the text you wrote in just now is written to the chip and it's now an individual item, like bookmarks.
If you don't have the skill trained it says "You fumble with the Data Chip, not really knowing how to operate it."
It can only be read from when you're within 1500m from it or when you have it in your cargo/hangar. Yes, this means you can scan someone's cargo, be within 1500m of the person and read the chip. If a password is set, the "type password here"-window appears, just as with secure cans. It can not be read from when it's put into a contract or trade window. An example of how the item looks now;
-------------- Item name: BoB orders for the coming week Item description: "This Data Chip has obviously been written to." Mass: 0,1kg Volume: 0,1m3
In the 'Attributes' tab, you can see if it has a password, just like blueprints are; Password: Yes (or No it none has been set)
Special actions: *Right-click Item* > Menu > Hack (if password has been set) *Right-click Item* > Menu > Read --------------
It lasts for about a week. When it is "destroyed", it's transformed into a normal non-individual item, like "1x Antimatter S". It's now named "Unreadable Data Chip" and the description says "This Data Chip is far beyond rescue." You can trash it if you want to (or reprocess it for a small sum of minerals).
Codebreaker I Here's where something real interesting comes into play; you can hack the password. Yes, hack it for real. To do this you gotta have it in your possesion, in your cargo space actually. Also you gotta have a Codebreaker I fitted to your ship. The chance of hacking the password is 5% (< can't get away from this one). This is because you shouldn't be able to read a Data Chip with a password the instant you get your hands on it.
Background to why I propose this; Many times I've wanted this kind of game mechanic, where I can simply write what I want into a Data Chip. Give it to someone else, put it in an asteroid-belt for someone else to find. Treasure-hunt, clues and games anyone? It's great for roleplaying and mysteries in general. Just good for storing information, handing out manuals to your corp-members, make a news-paper? Useful to the soldier far behind enemy lines who got his orders from his superior right when he left.
I've tried this with bookmarks, but it's only the title that gets transferred to the person you're giving it too, the "comments/details" text you write in disappear. And what you can write in the bookmark title, well it ain't much.
This also adds a thing to do for the CovOps-pilot/spy; read information from other people's ships. Also for the refiner, who can buy up used chips and reprocess them. Additions/thoughts/comments?
