I have a character who is just about pure Minmatar, and definitely doesn't have skills in any other race's BS - or in fact any other combat ship bigger than a frigate.
I am going to work towards level 4 combat missions. The Maelstrom looks as if it ought to be pretty good for missions, with its shield tanking bonus and HUGE grid, not to mention 8k shields.
My (tentative) fitout proposal is:
High: 8x 1400 (low-end named maybe for fitting) Mids: XL SB II or C5-L, boost amp (II if it will fit), hardeners to fill in Lows: 2x gyro II, DCU II, PDS II to fill the gaps
And of course drones to fill the bay, probably lights/mediums for the frigates and/or cruisers.
I may consider fitting cruise launchers in some of the highs, depending on the balance between grid and CPU.
Is this going to work, would 1200s be better/more *****ble, any other comments please?
I am quite used to flying a Raven on my main, and am pretty good with it, but haven't used guns much.
What's alphastrike on a Mael with BS IV and high gun skills, anyway?
One last thing; it occurs to me that this would work as a fleet boat, with some variations. Comments? ---------------------------------------------- "Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent."

Edited by: Ishan Shade on 12/03/2007 14:57:31 I for one can't understand how anyone can effectively do lvl 4 with 1400s. If your 100km away they work just fine, but once they come withing say 30km and start to orbit you won't hit a thing. Using light/medium drones for the frigates and cruisers just takes forever.
Really I would always take a typhoon for lvl 4 over a mael. 4x cruise 2x medium autocannons 2x heavy nos Heavy armor tank 5 med drones + 5 heavy drones
Works like a charm.

Well, I got myself a Maelstrom for L4s.
Being a bit timid to lose it, I've been running L3s and it works fine.
Head away from the pack and pick off all the cruisers, it's pretty easy as you damn near instapop them if you have low transversal and the right ammo. Most cruisers are at the right range and go down fast. Drone eat the frigs damn fast. Although an AB helps, it's not entirely necessary.
I've also run a few L4s and things get tricky when trying to keep range. You have to suck up the damage from BS and pop the cruisers with guns, and frigs with drones. It works reasonably well from my experience.
The cap on the maelstrom suffers hard. Due to the priority you have to put on popping things you need to boost a lot of shields. The cap runs down hard and fast, i've got one CCC rig and will be putting more on once I have the isk.
My fit: Hi - gallium 1400s Mid - SBA,XL CL-5, active hardners Low - 2x GYROII 3x PDUII (pdus not required for fit, but to help shield and cap)

I dont fly minmatar BS, but I have done lots of missions in a shield tanked domi with 350 or 425 rails. 425 works great for most missions, so 1400 arty should work good as well. But if you fight lots of BSes that closes in, for example if you fight Angels, then 1200 or maybe even autocannons would be preferably.
I would fit the malestrom something like this: High: 1400, 1200 or autocannons, depending on mission Med: SB, hardeners, cap rechargers and atlest one shield boost amplifier Low: 3*gyro, rest PDU
If you have good enough tank to free up one mid, I would fit a tracking computer and use 1400 almost exclusively.

Edited by: Hllaxiu on 13/03/2007 13:16:59 I fly a maelstrom in level 4s, works just fine, though you may occasionally have to warp out if you are in a mission with full room aggro (or if you screw up).
Highs: 8x 1200mm II Med: X-Large shield booster, 3x Hardeners, Boost amp, Cap Recharger Lows: 3x Gyros, 2x PDU
I haven't really had any issues with stuff coming too close - t2 medium drones make short work of frigates, you can pop cruisers quite quickly at medium range, and if you fly your ship a bit you can hit npc battleships down to basically pointblank range.
1200s are better because they have larger magazines, have a shorter rate of fire (so you don't "overkill" too much on little frigates at long range), and have better tracking.
Be sure to vary your ammo based on the NPCs you're going up against. Phased Plasma, Fusion and EMP are the ammo types you should consider. Phased plasma is mostly thermal, fusion is mostly explosive and EMP is a mix. PP for Guristas/Serp, Fusion for angels and so forth...
Ideal average volley damage with my alt's skills is 4492 with EMP and 3327 with PP or EMP. (remember that NPCs have very polarized resists, EMP will deal less damage against angels and other npc types).
I would recommend against using a setup like this in a fleet - you want passive tank (hit point buffer) there, and a Tempest would be cheaper all around. --- Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail. - Emerson |

Edited by: Shodo Deka on 15/03/2007 14:06:52 I have been running lvl 4 missions for a couple of month now in a Maelstrom slowly upgrdig the fit as I got more money. The fit I use if itĘs a primary tank or I have to solo one of the harder missions is something like this:
High: 5x1400 Gallium, 3xArby Cruise Launcher Meds: 1xGist c-type large, 1xshield amp, 4x mission specific shield hardners Lows: 1xDamage Control II 2x PDUII, 1x Gyro II 1x Tracking II Rigs: 2xCap Recharge, 1xTurret Damage
With this fit I can run the shield booster indefinitely (boosting 110 hp /sec) which on most missions will keep my shield at a cool 98-100%. T2 drones can easily handle what ever gets to close for the cannons to hit (with the tracking enhancer they will still hit cruisers at 30km) The guns do enough damage to take out the 2.5 mill rat at the end of Vengeance without too much trouble (his defender has a hard time hitting projectile ammo ). This fit is not cheap but it is still not as expensive as what you see some mission runners in.
Some of the missions with high em/thermal can be faster to run in a armor tanked typhoon especially if you canĘt afford a faction shield booster.
But overall I think this is a great mission runner.

Edited by: The Jackyl on 19/03/2007 01:38:18 Have run lvl 4s for a while with the Mael and as one of the other posters noted going arty in lvl 4s just doesn't work for me so I run an all AC setup.
High: 8 x 800mm Scouts Mid: Gist X-Type 100mn AB, Large SB II, Invul Field II, Cap Recharger II, 2 X Shield Boost Amps II Low: 2 x Gyro II, 3 PDS II Rigs: EM, Kinetic, Thermal shield resist rigs
I just pop at shot at a group and let them come to me, drones handle any frigs or small cruisers in close the ACs can't track (no prob with BCs or BSs in close) and the AB lets me run down any long ranged BSs in a hurry. Of course makes for a nice tight looting/salvaging area too.

high: 5-8x 1200 scouts and 3x arb siege or cruise launchers med: xl t2 sb, ab t2, hardeners (as many as u can, mission specific) low: 2x pds t2, 2x trackind mod t2, gyro t2 I have no rigs so far but would go for cap or dmg rigs 10 med drones t2 - dmg mission specific Maelstorm is slow so ab is a must if u have to run 80-100 km to the next gate (it'll still be a very long time ). if u have 3x cruise missile equipeed use them to help ur drones deal with cruisers. cruisers deal most of dps there. stay at 40-45 km of bs's (u can pepper them with artys and send drones if they have nothing to do). 2x tracking mod in lows is also advised for hitting cruisers at 20-30 km. With this fit u have enough cap and shield boost to stay on. woudnt advice on cap rechargers or shield amps-waste of precious mid slots for hardeners (if its 2 type dmg mission take two hardeners of each type. the problem r missions with more then 2 types of dmg especially those that include emp/thermal + something. Try to kill as fast as possible ships that deal some difficult dmg - angel saints (thermal i think) or angel cruisers dealing emp). Well, i run a maelstrom in lvl4 missions with some friends. And it kicks ass, i use this setup:
5x AC's 3xT2 torps
4x Hardeners (Can remove one for invulfield / EW module) Shield Boost Amplifier and a XL shield booster.
2x Cap power relay 3x Gyro's
With the shield boost amp. You can have the 2 power relay's without penalty, and with the good shield boost bonus you get this is a assom setup with Battleship lvl4 (prefereably 5.) ---- minmatar.. for life! |

I run level fours in a Maelstrom all the time, with ease. Yeah, my gear is pretty nice, but I could downgrade to a X-Large C5-L shield booster and do just fine.
8x 1200mm artillery (tried 1400mm, 1200 is better) 1x X-Large shield booster 1x Shield Boost Amplifier 1x 100mn Afterburner II (I love this thing so much...) 3x Shield Hardeners 3x Gyrostablizer II 2x PDS II
Get yourself some capacitor rigs if you're only using a C5-L or a tech two booster. If you're using a deadspace booster, I'd imagine you could run your booster plenty long without trouble.
This setup has seen me through, and I mission down in Sansha's Nation country, and 2x EM and 1x TH hardener are enough to see me through their roughest missions.

Why use a maelstrom in Level 4's?
When you need an insane tank for missions - take the maelstrom
Imagine a maelstrom with three cap rigs, and the following in mids (assuming gurista npcs)
Gisti C XL SB DG Boost Amp Pith Xtype Kinetic x2 Pith Xtype Heat x2
I use pretty much that setup wit a raven (although i have a mix of Gisti x type and Pith X type hardners, but thinking since i have great minie skills that I might switch for certain missions. That's an insane perma tank. Adjust for different NPC damage types as necessary

Edited by: Nalar Marnith on 17/04/2007 03:54:22 Lost my maelstrom to the crap that is Cargo Delivery, aparently BMs don't always work in missions. So thanks to inconsistent game mechanics there goes that ship.
Now run in a phoon. Interestingly you can wack together an half decent phoon fit, including the phoon and insurance for the price of the maelstrom, bare.
I've noticed that with 4x1200s and 4x cruise (neither t2) I seem to rip through missions faster and although the tank isn't as solid, I haven't had any trouble. Having heavy drones is great, they eat cruisers for breakfast. For frigs I just use t2 lights.
