Crossposting from EVE Information Portal: This new Chronicle is a slightly subtler piece than usual, dealing as it does with the life of a normal couple, with no amputations, torture or Fedo sex. It is not a kind story, but it's not entirely without hope, either.
A couple of notes:
Yes, there is no image right now. There will be. Half the company is off sick, it seems, and the poor guy in charge of doing the artwork for this story is busy praying to the porcelain gods.
This piece contains a reference to one of my favourite short stories, by Hemingway.
The self-cleaning coffee brewer was inspired by CCP's coffee & tea machine, which causes no end of frustration and agony with its endless pleas for cleaning and refilling. When we, as a species, finally manage to create a fully automated hot drink maker, I will know the future has arrived at last.
For the more juvenile, you may find yourself thinking up several different possible meanings of the story's title, "Soft Passage". Let me assure you that I've already heard them all.

Personally I'm finding this chronicle creepier and creepier everytime I read it.
There is definitly something wrong. Maybe it's their rampant need for consumerism, maybe it's the temporary stop at the shop selling baby clothes, maybe it's the fact that it's implied that these people have "good jobs" yet actually having anything of their own seems like an incredible luxury... ______________________________________________ -You can never earn my respect, only lose it. Edited by: Aileen Kismet on 13/03/2007 22:49:28 You're right, incredibly creepy undertones the further you get into it. However flowery and pleasant the people or the look of the surroundings, there definately seems to be a growing anxiety regarding an uncertain, and quite possibly dangerous, future.
Edit: The baby clothing store was just that much extra disturbing for some reason.

Is it just me or do every single one of the chronicles have a negative aspect, they all seem to be really dark and disturbing. There should be some humor in the backstory, some funny events, I cant believe that comedy has left the universe, four chronicles on torture??
I would like to see some joy!

I quite liked this chronicle; looking forwards to the picture to accompany it.
Any chances we'll get another glimpse into the lives of Satyan and Treta?

Ahh luminaire. I used to hang out in that system alot. A very nice story. Has some depressing undertones but its fuzzy goodness is a nice change from the ruthlessness of eve. I wouldnt mind a multi-chapter fic about the lives of an ordinary couple in eve.
Though if they set the travel scale to red would that mean they would get travel options that took them to Amamake or Hagilur?
If I had an Alt I would probably post with it... |

No wonder, since the entire story concerns what'll happen to them in the future, and much of it ain't pretty. For details, and one explanation of the baby clothing scene, see this spoiler post.

It's just you. "The Greatest Joke" is incredibly hopeful given the circumstances, "The History of Flight" is a story of joy and release, and "Saccade" is merely about a man applying for a job. Ignore the projectile vomiting in the last one.
That said, EVE stories will always tend towards the dark end of the spectrum. EVE itself does so as well, by design, and was intended as such right from its inception.

I wouldn't mind, but the nature of this story pretty much precludes it. As my spoiler link shows, you've already been told everything I could possibly tell you about their future life.

It'd mean they would get a contract asking them to transport this here batch of worthless minerals to a station in 0.0, and don't worry about the dozen guys who're hanging outside it, they're just locking on to your ship as a courtesy ...
