After a while of pirating the same lowsec systems for a while I figured it was time for something new. So I thought about pirating 0.0 instead, and make a new corp while I'm at it (Havent made it yet though)
Anyway, the genreal idea is to set up shop in a 0.0 bordering lowsec system and launch gangs into 0.0 consisting of cheap disposable ships. The goal of these raids is to kill or ransom ships of all sizes, execpt capital ships
I fly Caldari with missiles, and are a bit short on money (a little more than 100 mill). And I need a ship I can fly that is cheap to fly, cheap to lose, but in gangs of 5-10 peeps can be vicious. I expect to lose alot of this particular ships, either to blobs, gatecamps or nosy competition
My question to you: What ships should I use, and what setup should I use on it? I'm interested in both tackling and dps setups, or hybrid. Will it suffice with a gang of frigates? A Merlin or Kestrel? Would a Caracal be useful or would it just die too fast? Lastly, I reckon BC's are too expensive for my current wallet

caracal ftw!!!
Its the greatest cruiser atm my opinion (ok, plated thorax can be more evil, but it doesnt count )
You can do "sniping", anti-ceptor, tackling, evil ECm stuff, you can do it all.
Anti-ceptor fitting (see those speed-crows worht 50 mil + go instapopped) 5x Assualt missile launcher II w/precision kinetic missiles. 1x TP 2x Large shield extender 1x Sensorbooster 1x warp disruptor
lows a mix of PDS and BCU that various of your fitting skills. just play around in it. its a great fun ship that can do many things, and at cruiser V you reach out 100km with ehavy missiles :D. frigs imho wont cut it. or well it would against in large numbers. but not 5, 5 cruisers is way more lethal and still mobile.

Thanks for the reply mate, but are you sure that setup is replacable? Will I lose alot of them (the area I intend to operate in is kind of ...populated) And if I do, how much money would I lose?
My corp is kind of dependant on getting more money from our kills than we're losing from our losses...

Edited by: Valandril on 13/03/2007 12:57:29 Don't listen to him, caracal got tank and dps of a kestrel, and fitting t2 mods on somehing to die to anything = wrong, also dps of caracal is equal to well skilled kestrel...*
If u want cheap gang ship, fit blackbird, ecms are always good.
* - ok i saw caracal killing frigate but frig pilot was noob and didnt know what is "warpaway". --------

Caracal is actually a great gang ship. Don't use t2 and don't go mad, but fit with heavies, BCUs and a small shield tank. Just make sure there's lots of you.

Use a mix of Caracals and a few BlackBirds... Don't use the expensive modules - You will easily lose a few cruisers but with T1 modules they are very very cheap and you can take down battleships pretty easy if you catch them alone or without available friends nearby.
BB's are supposed to neutralize targets for easier ransom/kills/get-aways while Caracals do the damage. Often Caracals can carry EW as well.

Thanks for all the replies
Valandril, you say I should bring a dps cruiser, but seeing as I fly Caldari, what cruisr would that be? Moa?

But since I use caldari and missiles exclusively, I can't jus switch to a different races ships.
BTW, I only intend to use it until a Drake gets affordable to lose once in a while

- Caracal has a lot more base armor/shield than a kestrel. - Caracal has more slots than a kestrel. - Caracal has five missile slots that you can easily fit Assault, Heavy and Heavy Assault launchers in.
I seriously don't see how the DPS nor the tank of a Caracal is equal to the DPS or tank of a well-skilled Kestrel pilot. It's DPS is nothing like the one of, for example, a blaster Thorax, but the Caracal has the adventages of long range (the ship has both a range bonus and a damage bonus) and being able to change damage type anytime.

I've seen Caracals nearly insta-popping frigates, fyi, with T2 assault missiles of course.

/agree with Rob Gronz
Caracal is my fav PvP ship vs frigs (instapop ) and dessies, i've even killed a couple of cruisers w/ it. At the same time it's a very good PvE vessel.

Edited by: Valandril on 14/03/2007 15:11:26 Ship bonus, look at kestrel Now look at caracal.
U see now ?
No?
T1 fited kestrel go for around 100dps (on rockets) while t1 caracals on assaults go also for around 100. While on heavys he go for 30more dps.
And instapoping ceptor is not rly big deal for most cruisers, rly. --------
