Ok so I will soon be able to buy a cruiser and I want a thorax. However I am pretty new to this game and don't have much of a clue how to set it up. I have read a lot of the posts in here about recommended setups but (as with any good game) there are a million opinions and a lot of the equipment that is listed is stuff I am not trained to use yet.
So I planned to have 5 X 150mm railguns in the high slot but can someone recommend some decent mid/low equipment that someone who hasn't been playing the game long might be able to pick up? I want to do Level 1 missions initially and then move on to Level 2. By the time I get to L2 though I will likely have better skills to pick up better items. This character is a soldier so has a lot of the basic military skills. If possible if you could spell out words instead of writing AB, SB etc that would be awesome!
Thanks very much to anyone who can help!!!

Edited by: Dark Kavar on 13/03/2007 04:06:35 ok, not sure on the exact slot layout on the thorax, but if you're running missions with it i'm thinking...
highs:5 dual 150 mms
mids:webber after burner cap recharger
lows: 3 rat specific hardeners 1 medium armour repairer 1 800 mm plate
dunno if it will fit, should work for mission running lvl 1's and 2's if it does though
EDIT: sorry dual 150 mm rail guns
Kind of like the Triforce in Zelda, only not quite as potent.

Edited by: throbbinnoggin on 13/03/2007 07:58:00 It's been a long time since I messed with a mission setup for a thorax (since one of its bonuses -micro warp drive- is usless in deadspace). It's really better as a pvp ship. But here we go. All the equipment listed below only requires some of the most basic skill sets at lvl 3 highest. So it should be good for an entry lvl:
Highs: 5 * dual 150 rails
Mids: 10mn afterburner, stasis webifier, large capacitor battery
Lows: medium armor repairer, 2 * cap power relays, 2 * energized membranes
The reason for the capacitor related modifications are for a sustainable armor tank. It won't be all that important in lvl 1 missions when the rats most often won't even get passed your shields. But when you take the leap to lvl 2, you might be thankful that you can literally let your armor repairer run on autorepeat indefinately.
Use 2 energized membranes matched to the main 2 types of damage the npc's you are facing are dishing out. You can use active hardeners instead of energized membranes once you get hull upgrades skill to lvl 4 (the membranes only require lvl 3 and while they don't give as much resists, they don't use capacitor).
Another option, if you feel you can deal without the ability to permanently run your armor repairer, loose one of the cap power relays and fit a magnetic field stabilizer. This module will give your guns extra damage output. For most ship setups in EVE, you will find that you have to sacrifice damage output for tanking ability or vice versa.
To shake things up a bit and get a little taste of what a thorax is really meant for, replace the dual 150's with a set of electron blasters. Get in up close and personal. It's a lot more fun.
Last, but not least, don't forget drones. The rax's drone capacity of 50m3 allows for either 5 medium or 10 light combat drones. Since the most you can use at a time with high end skills is 5 drones, 5 * hammerhead (medium combat) drones should do the trick. If you're afraid of loosing them (which will occasionally happen with npc aggro), then just carry hobgoblin lights. They do about 2/3 the damage of mediums overall. The lights work just as well on frigate size targets as mediums in my opinion. But on anything larger, mediums will be superior.
edit: here is a good resource for mission information: http://eveinfo.com/missions/
Good luck...

Ignore the above...
This is a great lvl 1 lvl 2 Thorax setup...
High: 5x 150mm Railgun Mids: 1x 10MN Ab, 2 large shield extenders Lows: 2x Mag stabs, 2x Nano 1x I-Stab
Don't forget your drones
Nothing will get passed your shields and the guns will eat frigates, destroyers and cruiser for breakfast

hm.. i should tell u ignore che above exactly as the above poster but also ignore her... that's why:
1) small guns or med? If u are low skilled and fo L1/L2 missions u will do MUCH more dammage and have much less problems using small turrets (rails). You SHOULD use medium turrets, as they do more dammage, but versus small targets there are not puch reason and you should have good tracking skills. Even with that the real advantage is not when u kill frigs, but when u kill cruisers.
2) where i disagree with the ashield tanked setup: I can agree that could work, but since u are training gallente, train it correcty!! One day you should make L3 misisons with a BC, so train for armour tank and ignore thorax shield tanking crap setup. Again.. the above setup can work, but think in long time and train something that u will use also in future.
Obviusly u should also train for med guns one day ( in order to be ready for L3 missions), but dont hurry to med sized guns where u dont need them. Train cruiser tanking, cap and powedrid skills first, they will be immediatly effective. much more than med sized guns ;-)

if that fits... its a VERY good setup for lvl 2s... for lvl1s id use the 150mm small rails.. but for lvl 2s... dual 150mm are cool :)

IMHO vexor is far superior to pve compared to thorax, but it's very do-able
5x 150s (small gun)
10mn ab II 2x nicest cap chargers you can
1x med rep 1x 1600mm tungstun 2x passive hardener 1x active hardener
Lvl 2s are very much populated by frigs, with the odd cruiser, so use small guns. This ship will tank better than a vexor, but do less dps, and makes no use of the ships boni. The dual 150s look nice but I'm too drunk to do math, I'm comfident it fits but I doubt low-sp ppl will be able to fit it. (and I'm purdy sure few high sp ppl use raxes for lvl 2's)

Imho THIS is a good setup for noobs and L1/L2.. obviusly realy low skilled pilot can switch the 1600 plate any time for a 800 plate T2 ( or named). :)
p.s) never forget drones ......

vexor for sure,
but, vexor = drone skills thorax = gunnery skills
so if you're training gunnery and specificly blasters you will get better valure out of the thorax but if your drone skills are respectable the vexor is a better option.

Just a few words...
Thorax bonus is for med hybrids. If you are going to use frigate sized guns, you won't take advantage of the ship bonuses. If that's the case, you may be better off with some autocannons instead of the rails. |

Easily, you only lose out on a single turret (not a highslot, a hardpoint) and 1 low, the drone power of the Vexor makes up for that easily, the Thorax might be able to compete better if one of its bonuses wasn't useless in missions.

As I said in a previous thread:
"I made the Thorax work but it required Engineering 5 / Advanced Weapons Upgrades 4 and an RCU.
I then went with 4 250mm rails and 1 150mm rail (named "little brother").
I fit it with a web, gave it a full set of medium drones and a tracking enhancer.
This was quite the skill intensive fit, but it allowed me to wipe out ships from 50km out. If anything got much closer, the drones could take care of it."
This wouldn't work for a new character, and you are sacking some tank ability for the medium rails... but I've found them super effective at sniping out frigates before they can target me. The full bay of medium drones is also critical in case more than a few ships get too close. -...

Edited by: Donathan Slade on 13/06/2007 13:47:50 T2 setup for people who can barely afford a thorax? Wow, people are idiots and just don't think.. seriously.
Thorax = guns Vexor = drones
I ran both Vexor and Thorax, and the thorax is better for missions. btw. F**K dual's. Duals blow balls. Their Damage/tracking is horrible. Be it, the fitting requirements are easier than 200's. But honestly, its not worth it. Hit up 150mm rails with iridium ammo while your skills are low.
Highs - 150mm Rails- Iridium S Meds 10mn AB, 1x stasis web, cap recharger. Low - Medium armor rep, damage control, 2x rat specific hardeners and a energized adaptive nano membrane. Or flip out damage control for a magnetic field stab(more turret damage)
Now, the reason I say EANM instead of a 3rd rat specific is because I'm paranoid and used to seeing reds in empire. :) That and I don't want to just ignore other resists.
Edit: 5x Medium Rat specific drones.

Hey Banthu....
Well, you can go through what ppl said (not all, some has actually a clue about what they speak ) but wont work for you for several reasons. Since you are a low sp char (as u said) and doing L1 - L2 missions try this: H: 5x 150mm rails (antimatter) - in your mission you would not hit anything with medium guns (and also this will let you fit the rest) M: Afterburner (or Microwarpdrive for non dead space mission, but personally I use(d) AB) Webber (!!!!) and a cap recharger L: Medium armor rep. 3 active hardeners (damage specific) and a 1600 plate
5 medium drones this will give you enough tank to be able to do any missions with no worry and good firepower to finish them quick. Go in, get the agro from first group, release drones. U can start shooting at around 12 km (and hit :p ) and as soon as someone gets <10 km put the webber on him. Also after each group get your drones in the bay and repeat the above (if your drones get the agro at the beginning from the group u can say bye bye to them...) Also donĘt bother with orbiting just hit keep at range, or be moving away from the groups in a straight line...

We are talking level 1/2 missions here... In a Thorax... 3x hardeners and a MAR??? Most of the time he will be done before they even get past his shield. Especially in these level 1's. He should just try to blast through them as quickly as possible to gain some standing.
I'd try something like:
Mix of 200mm and dual 150mm rails-Or if Engineering 5 you can use 5x 200mm rails AB, 2x named cap recharger SAR II, 3xmagstab, 1x EANM
drones: 5xHammerhead I
He will not need much tank just yet.
