It may just be me but there is nothing I hate more than losing harvestors (losing a ship requires you to risk it so you should be prepared). Its SOOOO annoying. And with the new patch, pirates seem to spawn evry 3 seconds and there is no more threat box so they can sneak up on your pathetic drones and pick them off before going after you. In my opinion using harveys where there is any kind of pirate spawn is useless
I have a few suggestions to save mine and other ppls blood presure levels:
1. Make pirates target only things that are actually threats to them not poor little harveys. I know the point of the pirates is to protect their ore but surely pirates should go for threats to them first and then kill your harveys when you are dead.
2. Bring back the threat box or some other audio warning of danger
3. Give combat drones an option 'Guard' or something, which makes them automatically attack all threats within 10km or something because atm my ogre just sits idly by, watching the harvey fireworks.
4. Make mining drones follw orders (like return and orbit) even in the middle of mining.
Any comments/suggestions?

With the new Scanner, you can set it up to show Pirates! Even before they start locking/Threat of the old.
That didn't stop the fact that When I saw them on my Radar, they launched Missles and both my Corp mate and I crashed to the Desktop at the same time. (thus losing our last 5 harv's and almost the beslower by the time we both got to logging back in!)
I'm still grumpy about that. Loosing expensive drones to game bugs _______________________________

Although it doesn't solve any of your problems, I'll mention this.
the method I use is to only use drones on an asteroid that I can approach to within 1km - that way, even when they're on the far side of it, my drones are still within 1500m of my ship and I can scoop them in at the first sign of trouble.
This won't help you to mine scordite (massive rocks) and it's a seriously bad idea to use it in the middle of a cluttered belt, because then you can't get your SHIP away if a threat turns up, due to being stuck to assorted asteroids. Nevertheless, it's a useful thing to remember.

Yes that is a useful tactic but as you have said it has very limiting conditions

hehe, actually the speculation thats going around is that CCP made pirates atack mining drones because of the massive surplus of harvisters in game.
basicly CCP screwed up and made harvs drop in the 1000's and then tried to fix it by making NPCs atack mining drones and they wont let drones return when mining because they want them destroyed.
This effectivly will fix the problem; eventually... tho it just makes the people who used the harv bug that much richer [4000 harvs in stock - sell 100 at 450k, 95 of those get blown up, guy comes back needing to buy another 100]
I do the same thing; sitting my ship up as close to an asteroid as possiable and of my origonal buy of 34 harvs (at 30k each) I still have 17 of them. I lost half the first day they change the NPC AI :\
