I have a question which quite possibly has a simple answer.
Ok so here's my delema(sp). I have a rohk i'm testing and i very much like it's survivablity in combat. I want to get a much dmg as i can out of the ship. I read on the forums about using a split missle rail set up.
so i go about testing in quick fit for dps. Now i know quick fit isn't spot on but it's close so i use it as a guide.
i did 3 set ups as follows( left out any non dmg mods as they derail the subject):
-8 425 t2 rails, 3 t2 mag stabs. -4 425 t2 rails, 4 t2 cuise launchers, 2 t2 mag stabs, 2 t2 bcu's. -6 425 t2 rails, 2 t2 cuise launchers, 2 t2 mag stabs, 2 t2 bcu's.
425's loaded with anti and i tried all 4 different types of ammo for the launchers, all the same, mix of all 4 ect.
the results: -8 425's have a dps of 363 -4/4 slot combo has a dps of 265 max (it goes lower with differen ammo types.) -6/2 slot layout has a dps of 292.
my skills are at lvl 5 for every gunnery skill for rails including large rail spec 5. Missle skills are simular with 5 in each(this part was edited in by quick fit).
I realise that missles have a flight time which contributes heavy to the lack of dps. i tested at both 10k range and at a 50k range the numbers went up and down at most by one or 2 numbers.
Is there somthing i'm missing? I know there is alot of eve players that sleep with a calculater under their pillow, and could probably help a fellow out.
I would just like to know if "overall" the dmg is more and if so by how much? ------FD------

I think the main reason for this setup, isn't in pure DPS. but being able to change half your weapons to a differn't damage type.
if you notice your target is heavily therm/kinetic tanked (caldari/galente tech2 ships for example)... you can switch your launchers to explosive or em and do more dps (even though your on-paper unresisted DPS is much higher with 8 rails).

well quick fit does take it's dps against a "ship" with base resists and 2k armor and shields. ------FD------

As long as your doing your numbers assuming that you ship is in the optimal range of your railguns and tracking in perfect railguns will alwayse have a higher DPS than missiles.
Missiles strong point is that they can be used at any range inside their maximum with equal effectiveness (flight time just adds some delay to the initial shot, if you start your dps count at the first hit instead of the first launch flight time is not a factor) and the fact that they do not suffer from tracking in any way shape or form. They have explosion radius and velocity but that is more in line with using the correct launcher for the ship class your fighting (Ie. using a large railgun to shoot a frigate). Oh yeah, and they dont take any cap to fire.
Factor in when a ship manages to get close inside your railguns optimal and starts to orbit at a decent speed and your missile dps will shoot well above your railguns. Situations like this are not factored into people DPS ....... EVER, they area alwayse base numbers off a stationary target that is untanked like a large collideable object in a mission. ------------------------------- C.D's Formula for success ------------------------------- Credit Card = Game Time Card Gametime Card = ISK Therefore Credit Card = ISK.

also... i just realized you are using cruise launchers. That is worse than fitting dual 250mm rails DPS wise. use torps, then see what your numbers are like.

ok so i changes a few things around
so the "ship" i'm shooting at has:
velocity 350 transversal 100 signature 150 and i did 2 ranges one at 5k the other at 50k
the dps stays almost exactly the same, except i do a little more dps on the armor at 50k.
and torpedos: they seem to be worse 239 dps at 20k and 5k, less the more i go further
