I played for a week now, i still dont understand what im supose to do, expect for prepare for pvp.. and become economicly powerful. All I did for the past week was. did missiones, mined, killed npc pirates, bought ships, bought weaps, mined again, killed npc ships, and was training skills. Would someone like to fill me in on why im doing this? Is there more to this game then, blow up stuff and collect their crap?

Well, I'd agree some more story to fill you in to the atmosphere of the game would be nice in the beginning...but really...why do you play any game?

There is also the RP (role playing) aspect of this game. And of course the politics and exciting (as they say i have never participated in that so far) of 0.0. If you expect to see the full potential of this game and the environment within one week, i think you will be disappointed.

As a kid, when you sat in a sandbox, did you just sit there and wonder what you were supposed to do? No, you had fun, hopefully.
Your last statement is like "my friend has been building sand castles all day, but faster than me... is it all I can do?".
Eve is a sandbox, no one is going to lead you by the hand. Go out there and have fun!

Indeed. Quite so. Well, let me put some words on how I see the world of EVE here. Cool topic.
The world of EVE is dynamic. It is actually mostly governed by players and their actions. I said mostly, since there's the mysterious and eluding CCP pulling the big strings in the background, but that's where gods and conspiracies belong, don't they...
Anyhow, you can't win this game. Accept it. Face it. So far, in a way, EVE has for me shown to be the closest alternative to virtual reality. A social experiment of sort. It is a scary thing. How can you win in life? That's how you can win in EVE too. EVE is just a tool - a sandbox, if you will - where you have to figure out the meaning yourself. Much like the meaning of life out there in the mysterious 'real life' I keep hearing about.
Of course, EVE is still a game. Or should be, a pastime, where you're supposed to have fun and so on. However, sometimes a little work is needed to gain even more fun. There's no greater joy than pilot your first cruiser (or battleship) after working hard to get it - and there's no greater sorrow than to lose the ship in its maiden voyage to some random, insane pod pilot that should not be flying anything but instead be restrained in a mental institution. Oh trust me, there are plenty of these around EVE universe...
ISK, the money, is used to buy things and services. Things and services provided by other players, most often, though there are repairshops and insurance brokers, and some items (notably most skillbooks) are seeded in game world through NPC stations. Mining is one way of gaining ISK. There are others - pirating, scamming (with minimal (read: no) risk of getting caught - damn MMOs suck in this aspect), shooting NPC ships on belts or complexes, doing missions for NPC agents, trading, heck, even begging. Some people like mining, some people like scamming whereas others buy low and sell high.
In beginning it is tedious, and my words will offer not much consolence to your pain. However, during next few months you will learn the ups and downs of life in EVE. As a general hint for the coming enlightment, it is usually suggested to try build up some basic wealth by mining, npc hunting etc, join some friendly corporation so they can benefit from you as a mining slave as they teach you the finer points of the game, and learn learning skills.
But in the long run, you just need to find something for yourself, whatever it may be. For me, it was an ideology - some greater goal behind the game mechanics. Many value wealth, even more value numbers in killboards, some value the beauty of the world, others drink quafe and enjoy exotic dancers or talk high politics on the forums. You just have to find your own thing.

God what an awful question...
It's like the time I was playing quake and this girl was watching. She asks me "What are you doing?"
"I'm shooting people."
"Why?"
...
F--- I don't know! They're shooting me so I'm shooting them. Why? Ugh.

I beg to differ. The problem may be that there are so many points that it is hard to distinguish and pick one.
Have you ever wondered what would be the best weapon to kill a particular pirate? Ever experiment? What about the best armor mods to make your ship tougher? Or maybe the best loadout to compete with other players?
Ever consider what is your ships weakest point, and what skill might improve that? Or, what ship would you like to fly next?
Ever consider joining a corporation? And if you did that, what ship/skills/etc would best enhance your contribution there?
I have only played a few months, but I promise you, I haven't given you even half my list of things that interest me.
As has been said already, EVE is a sandbox. You make of it whatever you choose to.

Took me some time and effort to get into this game. First few weeks were a bit hit and miss. Now I can't get enough of it. I'm really glad I struggled on when, like you, I just couldn't see the point. There's so much I want to do in Eve, it's my playground :).

yep, you havent found your sweet spot. I'd say get out of the corp your in and find a 0.0 corp to join, a BIG one. Dont be shy and jump right in there, ask questions and help with the stuff they do. You will see alot of the options of EVE fast. Then make a decision after another week or so of being in a big 0.0 corp. You may want to go back to empire to do other stuff, stay in that uber cool corp, or maybe this is'nt the game for you. But please dont quit until you give it a go in a big 0.0 corp.

If you're not having fun with missions and mining and all that then find something else to do. Join a pvp oriented corp and give that a shot. The beauty of this game is that there isn't a set path to follow, you decide what's fun and do that.

Stop running missions for the time being then, and try something else. You don't have to train for several months and have a massive wallet to PvP, so try that. Do a little low sec piracy to start with if you want.
As for the point of playing the game? There is none, except to have fun. Set your own goals and expectations, and do what you find to be the most enjoyable.

the hard part is to figure out what you want.
First, set a long term goal.
Get Rich? Become a corp CEO, become a kick ass PVPer, and so on..
when you pick your long term goal(and you'll switch this from time to time), pick short term goals that get you closer to your long term goal.
eg: You want to be a pvper.
So pick a ship as a short term goal. Say a BC. Get your ship skills up to Fly one. Then get your tanking skills up, that are needed for said ship, then the weapon skills for that ship, then the electronics/engeneering and navigation and so on.
When you have all your skills for that ship, pick another BIGGER ship, and aim for it..
Then continue on. Seriously, the game is damned boreing unless you are a TRUE loner. Find a corp, make friends. Friends help you through the tedious time, when you are training your skills up and feel like you can't do anything. This is a LONG term game. For example, I have 2 chars, each with a skill plan stretching out 2 years.
One is a pvper and I'm haveing a great fun on it, the other is a Cap ship pilot.
Find out what you want to do as a long term goal, then set short term goals, and you'll be set. But find a good corp. Make some good friends, and the rest will come of it's own accord. Because just like every other game out there, it's the people, not the game that make it special.

I don't mean to come across as mean, but the question that heads this thread seems silly to me. Make money, train skills, defeat other players? Releng, you've essentially asked if there's more to EVE than EVE. "I've been playing this Chess game for hours now, and all I seem to ever do is maneuver pieces around and try to kill the other guy's king." The game mechanics are what they are. If you don't enjoy them, there's not much anyone can do for you. What has there ever been in any online RPG but character advancement (in the forms of character ability and character wealth, universally) for the ultimate purposes of defeating other players' characters? Is WoW any different? Gain level, equip shineys, gank players.
Now, sure, EVE's got some end-game stuff. You can do the alliance thing, with capital ships and territory conquering. You can do the pirate thing and train all sorts of elite ships and become ph33red, as they say. But wherever you go, it still amounts to the same thing. Gain level, equip shineys, gank players.
Basketball! There's the game for you! -- oh wait, no, 'cause in Basketball, all you do is improve your skills and buy better shoes so you can defeat your opponents.
Again, please don't take the sarcastic tone of this personally.

Do what I did when I was just a few hours into the game... look at the market under "ships" and pick a cool-looking ship that'd you like to fly, and just work towards that goal. When you get there in a few weeks/months time, do the same again, or work towards maximizing said ship's capabilities.
Go explore, fly to places where you think it would be cool. Fly to each race's homeworlds, check out the landmarks, find a nice corner of space to base out of, join a corp and then choose your goals from there.
Perhaps take a step back from the game and see it for what it is: HUGE.
If that isn't an attraction, perhaps Eve isn't your game. If so, I'm sorry to hear that.
