I have a story to tell.
I am commonly seen as a scammer in Jita. And to be perfectly honest I wish I were. (that's the subjunctive there...it's dying, please try to save it)
I went into Jita a few weeks ago as a scammer. I decided I would try something a little different. So I offered in local to pay 1.2x whatever they donated to help me with a trade run I was doing. Okay, so it wasn't actually that original. But I got a taker, and I set off in my bestower a little richer...I think it was a couple mil.
I went to Motsu, and there I made the same offer, but got nothing. So I returned to Jita and paid the guy what I owed. No one was buying the idea, so I decided to scrap it.
Then I was in a bad mood a couple weeks ago, and decided I'd just do the good old 10x scam, cause I was ****ed and didn't want to try being creative. Incidentally I had just won a myrmidon and a mammoth from The Terrorist and sold them both, jacking my wallet to its highest ever 45 mil ISK.
As always the money started rolling in, no matter what, if you try that foolish scam someone will be a noob. I paid out. I got more, I paid out again. Any amount I could afford to pay out I paid out. But I started to lose steam and decided "What the hell, I'll just be honest on this one, I can't steal from these people."
I suck at scamming. I have a heart.
Well I paid out til I could no longer pay out anything. I sent evemails to those who were waiting, telling them they'd get a refund when I got enough money. I'm still in debt, actually, so the story isn't over.
Recently I've been running the same game as The Terrorist, but with smaller things because I can't afford anything big. The problem is that in Jita, they don't trust you, even if you're saying "Send 10000 isk, the first to do so will win back 50,000". I mean FFS, I'm not getting any worthwhile money scamming for 10,000...
Anyway. Goes to show. Not only did I feel bad, but I paid for it too.
I don't, however, feel bad about ore theft, and that's currently how I'm working to repay my debt.
I really want to be around for Terrorist's games just one more time, to clear my debt and get back in the black. What a waste of ISK...

Thats the whole difference, I'm a very nice person, in person that is. Without legal rammifications or account banning to worry about, it's an entirely different game now. I CAN be a heartless, cold, calculating and manipulative (Expletive)-Head. So, in EVE, thats a good thing.

See, I'm a **** too.
Not to mention a pirate (my main is Jex Jast).
I kill people's ships and rob them blind. I guess I just can't betray someone's trust I guess. That to me is worse than podding them for money or stealing ore.
If they know I'm a bad guy I can feel okay about doing bad things.

I *almost* felt bad over something I did last night. We were warping from belt to belt in a system flipping cans trying to start a fight. I scanned a bantam and a osprey jet can mining. I went down and popped the can of the osprey. There was 95k in pyro. So I flipped the can and it began... The lecture in local about darkness inc being a corp of ore thieves. I was laughing at this stage in gang chat and we were just sitting in the belt deciding what to do next. He warped off..
So in comes miner in a badger mkII with a smart bomb equipped. As I was the only person agressed he was concorded due to hitting gang members. I really felt sorry for the dude as he then explained he was relatively new to the game and only got his badger mk II yesterday. He then went on to talk about how his day was starting well with coffee and ore and I ruined it. I then reminded him that good days start with a secure container and we parted as amicably as one could when he went to work.
I then felt better about myself as I hauled his ore back home and thought about the fact I didn't have to mine it myself pew pew pew |

i always feel bad when play unfair, and scamming is unfair. Sure ppl should inform them self in forums to know the scamms, i always do that before i start to play.
then i make an alt and try the scamms my self BUT i give back the scammed money, cause i always have to think how the other person feels. Sure its only a game but its not much funn to loose big amounts of virtual goods or money you spend so much hours in it to get it, do to unfair gameplay.
and for me scamming is not a part of the game.
Sure its also not fun to loose ur ship to a gatecamp. but that IS part of the game.
today i did my first Trade (noob trade^^), lousy 400k profit with a full packed MarkII and 12 jumps lol. But i would have no problem at all to loose my stuff to a gatecamp, actually i exepted it. but non of the 3 unsecure systems was camped^^. but would i have lost money do to a scamm i could not accept it, cause thats no part of the game for me.
and for me it doesnt mather if this is a virtual world or not, there are ppl playing it, and you scamm other ppl.
sure in a virtual world i do things i never would do in real, like atack someone just cause i want to^^, be a pirate, but scamming ppl? no thanks , ill stick to fairplay.

My logic has always been, If I scam them in EVE with a good plan, then I've saved them the real-world hassle when some jerk with the same plot tries to scam them out of thier actual cash. So, really, scammers on the whole are toughening up some of the weaker minded players to the threat of actual con-artists. Albeit, there are some stark differences between EVE scammers and your average swindler, but the logic is really the same. I mean, come on now, theres some scams that you really can't fall for if you possess a bit of common sense. ______________________________________________________________

It's not. I intended to scam but I lost my head and just stopped thinking about gain. I figured that I'd just give away my cash, so what would have been a scam turned into a great reallocation of ISK. But not to my benefit; to my deficit. To the benefit of others. And when I pay my debt, to the loss of no one but me.
However:

I now feel like I can successfully scam. It's my mission to protect people from RW losses by scamming their fake money, for which many people still feel a real sense of loss.
Thank you Crinos. You're my inspiration. <3

Edited by: Crinos Childflayer on 15/03/2007 20:52:39 As the saying always goes, "If it sounds too good to be true, it friggin is and you're an idiot for believing me." I'll be honest, I've scammed every online game from Runescape to Neopets and really this is the best system for any of it. I don't mean to say it's easy to scam in EVE because it really isn't. Other games just put up blocks so that basic things won't work, but CCP doesn't bother. It's like putting a helmet on a retarded child, it'll keep him from hurting his head, but it won't teach him to stop banging it into a wall like a moron.
Basically, CCP makes people LEARN not to be stupid instead of just protecting them from the teachers. :) - "The childrens are so much crunchier if you suck all the meat off the outside first!" -Crinos, The Chosen of Chaos |

Hahahahahaha, at what point did I have the option to be a SEMI criminal? I never thought they'd only lock up half of me! All joking aside, are you saying that EVE pirates have a real world hobby of carjacking and robbery? or possibably people realise that ripping people off & ganking them in rl could lead to a bit of troulbe...so they do it in what is commonly known as A GAME

I totally agree with you. It's like these aweful pirates in game that kill ppl for no reason. probably the same ppl that carjack and mug little old ladies and get off on it.
imo what ppl do in RL is exactly what ppl do in a computer game

I must say i did feel quite guilty at popping a guys Hulk the other night - the pure irony that it ending up happening was funny tho.
Was happily mining in my Covetor until 4 normal rats spawn plus a Dread rat (was a 0.5 sys) so thought rather than the drones doing the work i'll get my Hawk and do some shooting for a bit, got back to find a Hulk had just popped the dread rat, so i emptied the wreck to salvage it and he turned his drones on me.... 5 T1 drones at that, so i set about locking and scramming is Hulk, couple of minutes later and no shields or armour left the ransom demand goes in and he has no money for it apparently, gave him a minute to stew keeping his shields down then tried again at lower figure and still no - tried a 3rd time to see what he would give me to survive but got nothing so he got popped lol.
Did feel bad but there is too much of a rush from popping people - all be it just a miner on this occassion tho - altho just to rub salt in the wound i did offer to sell him a fitted Covetor for a reasonable price

What do you base this on? "Once a SOB always a SOB" ?
I could go around making generalizations about what you are like in RL as well.
Personally I believe anyone with "anus" in their name to be the type of person who loves anus. I base this on absolutely nothing.

It's possible, seriously it is!
OK, the first and hopefully last financial fumble I had in EVE went something like this...
Deep in 0.0, at a station, I open the market place with the intention of buying some cap boosters. Overpriced by a magnitude of 1000% or something like that, I decide that I'll grab a 100 or so.
Turns out, I bought ~300mil worth of cap booster charges, might have been more but I cleaned the poor guy out.
Fortunately, the guy selling was a corpmate and we reversed the transaction. \o/
gotta be careful about the quantity box, accidents do happen. Each 0 is a multiple of 10, think of it that way.
