I'm playing with a 3 year old laptop, and thinking about buying a new one. But since approx 90% of my present use of my notebook is eve-online, I want one which will be working with the future eve-online.
So my question: Will DX10 be a mandatory requirement for walking in stations, or will that work with DX9 as well? If it is DX10 only, then I need to wait with a new laptop until late this year or early next year, when the first reasonably priced ones might hit the markets (besides the fact that there is no laptop with DX10 capability on the markets yet). If walking in stations can be done with DX9, I could buy a new laptop now.

Even if WIC is DX9 compatible, Eve is going to be releasing a DX10 client (beginning next year? I don't remember)
Besides, most all new games and 3sd applications will be utilizing DX10, so I would wait for DX10 anyways. Along with the fact that no current computer is fully compatible with Vista, I would wait till the hardware is.
(Unless you plan on upgrading again soon)

According to what I've read here, DX10 will be a requirement for walking in stations.
Hopefully till then an affordable DX10 laptop is available. I would hate to have to buy a Desktop again after some 10 years of laptop usage, just because of DX10...

from the thread in general -
"1. All the graphics are in-game from our upgraded Trinity engine. The animation is motion captured and then blended using our new character animation engine.
2. The video was made on an Alienware Area 51 R4 Quad core SLI machine with two Geforce 8800 cards with 768 MB RAM each. I think the machine has 4 gigs of regular RAM. That's not the required spec for the final product, though, but as the shaders are yet unoptimized, we prefer working with such monster hardware when making trailers and such.
3. The engine runs in DirectX 9, Shader model 3.0 on Windows XP."
Not saying that it WON'T be DX10, but as of now, it is DX9. At least the demo for GDC was.

what i can suggest to u is wait till dx10 is around.
a. dx9 laptops are going to be cheaper or gettin cheaper. b. eve will be going dx 10 and all the new pimp stuff will be dx10 aswell c. if u ever decide to use it for anything other as eve well hey dx 10 laptops for a bit of extra power d. buying a cheap desktop is allright since u can juice it up over time however a laptop is a different story better off buying a pimp one that will last u for a while as to buy one thats cheap and runs stuff allrightish now and be useless over a few months. I don't buy the dx10 "walking in stations" ONLY bit. The current stuff they are showing is NOT cgi, (ccp's words), so unless they are suddenly a lot further on with dx10 than they indicated, I'd say thats dx9 we're watching. I could be wrong.
Regardless of all of that, wine development is already looking at dx10 "backporting" for XP/win2k/linux and mac, and a project for the google summer of code is already taking shape to get that started. By the time CCP is rolling out their dx10 version, there will be a HIGH probability that dx10 will be "doable" for older platforms via wine..and NOT just for linux/mac.
Welcome to open source...where there is a need, there is usually the will.

Edited by: Ishina Fel on 18/03/2007 00:33:48 EVE will have a Vista DX10 client and a "one size fits all" DX9 client. Both will be supported and patched, and both will connect to the same game. If you had paid attention to the Dev Blogs and interviews for the last half year you'd know that. So no worries...
...though your three year old laptop might have slight troubles with the upgraded DX9 graphics as well, so a new one of some sort will very likely be necessary.

I know about the graphics initiative of CCP, and that we will enjoy both, a DX9 and a DX10 engine in future. But since walking in station seems to be some kind of an additional option, and obviously will have much more requirements on graphics technology, I'm wondering it that feature will be only available with the DX10 client.
I have experienced similar things with Ultima Online years ago, when they introduced a 3D client parallel to the "classic" 2D client, and some features where only available on the 3D client...

IIRC CCP indicated that no client would be 'more/less' than the other, but that the dx10 client would be using the latest eyecandy. To indicate that walking on stations is specific to one client and NOT the other would be going back on their word regarding this. I think this was misinformation or just an incorrect interpretation of what the article writer was being told tbh. (regarding dx10 station walking ONLY.)

I have been at the CeBit in Hannover today (biggest IT fair in the world) for some business meetings, and on the way out stopped at the Toshiba boot and took the chance to ask them about DX10 technology for their laptops.
Well ETA is 3rd or 4th quarter this year, and the price will be quite steep. It will probably need at least another year from then, until the price for a DX10 laptop will come down from geek level to consumer level.

Would still like to know if walking in stations will be available for DX9 or not. Any Dev here who could answer this?

Out of interest is there anything overly stunning one can do under DX10 graphics wise that one couldn't do under DX9?
I do find it rather strange that CCP would put so much effort into writing a new client that would lock out almost all of their market. I guess it is future proofing and I'm not going to push the 'you should use opengl' bandwagon as it is blatant that their mindshare is invested in DX but still...
Is there some reason for this that is based purely in code and not politics or buzz words? |

There was a miscommunication between the game article writer and the real info. NOTHING will be SPECIFIC to DX10 other than some additional shader support which will give additional "bling" to what is already there.
