Hi, firstly, I love eve, and I have 2 accounts, this is an alt scout. However, I would like to have another game to play now and then as a change, knowing that as I play it my skills are still training in Eve. Is SWG any good ? Any others that you guyz can recommend ? But not Guild wars, tried that, not keen.
Cheers

No. Just No. Not if they patch it, redo it from scratch, make it free to play.
Anyone who has played it will back me up on this, but such is it's infamous fall from grace, any MMO fan knows it is THE prime example of the worst run MMO ever to be created and is used in textbooks in Developer Nerf classes i bet
Edit: Oh yeh, try mmorpg.com. Has a list of just about every MMO out with ratings, reviews and forums for each.

Do not invest a single penny in SWG... ever. Pretend you never even heard of it and just move on. Do not give it another thought.
Then say a few Hail Marys just to be sure you're properly cleansed!

I read the tile of this thread and a chill ran down my spine. The posers above me are completely right. SWG had great conceptual potential in the early planning stage, but when it finally was released several years later it was broken at the most fundamental of levels. Not worth the effort of downloading it.

A brief explaination - It was a decent game once. Then one day everyone woke up, d/l'd a patch, only to find that someone had decided to radically simplify the entire game. Entire professions either got rolled into one, or ceased to exist.
Imagine CCP simplifying EVE to the point everyone quits, and Jita has 10 people in local on a friday night. Thats pretty much what happened to SWG after the NGE patch.

Hi dear!
I've been to EvE from SWG...
I still have 2 SWG accounts running, but do not play a lot.
The only good things in SWG is the crafting system and the player houses/cities.
If you like making money with crafting or Role play with a good group of well known friends, then yes this is the place.
for anything else, the post above are completly true. AVOID IT AT ANY PRICE...
Trust me, I'm a star wars fan...

The devs have improved SWG over the past year since NGE. I still play it off and on. I would say try the game for a month and make your own decision whether you like it or not. There are a lot of people that hold a grudge against the devs for what they did a year ago, so many of them judge based on emotion not rationality. SWG is still a "fun" game, just not as "good" as around 2005.
NOTE: The difference between fun and good

I think it should be very easy to tell if SWG is good or not, by how few people are playing it , it Star Wars if it was any good, it wouldnt be as anonymous as it is

When they totally fubared the game, they pulled most of the development staff to work on other stuff.
That's why since the NGE/CU were released, the updates have been almost non-existent.
The only reason they keep it open is to keep the Lucas trademark and to make a small amount of money.
There is zero future for SWG with SOE.
Pity, it was a great concept, and had quite a few great innovations that helped push the technological envelope within online gaming to new levels.

Former SWG player here. The only part of SWG worth anything anymore is the space expansion. Its the only part of the game that was untouched by the NGE. But be warned, as soon as you reach master pilot, it gets old really fast.
As for the ground game, it pritty much sucks now. Unless you find rock/paper/scissors or tick tack toe challenging!

It sucks monkeys.
I have dl'ed the trial twice in order to rate it for myself. First time I got really miffed with NPC's abilities to shoot through walls and the second time just found the whole process quite tedious.
5 years ago it may have been something, but now it's just and emarassment to mmo's

City of Heroes and City of Villains is an awesome game. Great player vs environment, its incredible in fact. And the PvP in the arena zones is challenging and fun too.
City of Heroes is what you want
I'd still be playing it if they hadn't nerfed all of my copyrighted characters to hell and back. That's one thing you have to avoid, don't try to recreate a fictional character that is copyrighted, because they will nerf it.

I like the space combat and if you get bored of master pilot train it another faction (not sure if you can still do that but you could when i played)
But PvP in space is fun, did they ever release the capital ships?

SWG was PWNed by their combat upgrade patch. A little birdy told me some talented coders are getting some sort of makeshift private server together for a prepatch version, but as far as i know it doesnt work beyond booting world then imediately crashes(proof of concept FTW). In short MMO private servers are sketchy at best, with the exception of Lineage II which gave away their server side code. Try out one of the larger LII private server sites and see how you like it. There is also 9Dragons which is somewhat of a generic hack'n'slash mmo. And there is also some betas you can get into if you watch the news sites. ------------- Hadean Drive Yards The EvE inflation, 80 Macro miners, 1.5b isk/day |

SWG was actually very good for the first two or three months it was out (overlooking the inherent stability issues any new MMO has).
What killed it is when SOE simply caved in to the demands of everyone crying that anyone else was stronger than they were.
Creature Handlers got kicked square in the pills having their ability to use three Rancors chopped to just one, then bounty hunters got nerfed because they were good at killing people (so what exactly are they supposed to do? knit?) who didn't know how to fight them.
then another few rounds of nerfing CH's because they dared to still be half decent after being crippled once, followed by the routine nerfing of any other class that was able to kill a tailor
SOE didn't give a rat's rump about balance, all they did was pander to the whines for nerfing anything and everything... you know, this is starting to sound familiar... almost like another MMO game I've played... but can't seem to put my finger on the name...
anyway... Devs need to calm themselves down when it comes to never ending cycle of nerfing, and that goes for ALL MMO games. Pandering to weaken everything people take issue with in the game is typically not the best answer anyway, it's often better to bring other things into line rather than knock something down a peg.

I enjoyed SWG before CU and NGE. Yes it had issues, but nothing that some balance work couldnt resolve..
But SOE decided to rip the guts out of the game, and that killed it for me.
As a result of the debacle that occured, I recommend to anyone not to touch SWG with a dis-infected barge pole, and will never play another SOE game.

I got SWG in August of '06; and I'd have to say most of the posts here are spot on. The space game is fantastic; but the ground game is just too laggy, buggy, annoying, (insert negative modifier here), ect.. Aparently it used to rival EVE for MMO awesomeness; but now it's just a waste of time and cash. I did think about getting back into it, but then i remembered that the only thing there was left to do was help other people master their pilot professions and grind on the ground. -----------------------------
