My current Osprey mining setup consists of three Miner IIs in the hislots and two expanded cargohold Is in the lowslots along with one MLU. So far I've either been mining in 0.9+ space (was mining Omber before I realized Scordite was just as, if not more profitable as it).
Now... I'm roughly two days away from flying the Retriever and I intend to specialize in mining, which is to say, I'm going for the Covetor and eventually the Hulk.
However, I was mining with my corp leader and he was in a Retriever, getting 3364 Plagioclase per cycle. This made me wonder whether the jump from the Osprey to the Retriever is worth it... although I've got a vague feeling I messed up the math somewhere.
With my current Osprey setup I pull 1300 Plagioclase per (1 minute) cycle, amounting to roughly 456m3. Dividing my corpmate's 3364 by three I get 1121 Plagioclase per minute... which would seem to go against what I was expecting. I do understand he was not using an MLU since he had to tank against rats... but I'm still confused as to whether the Retriever will yield less per minute than my current Osprey or not.
I've looked through EVEMon and EVEMEEP to try and solve this, but I still feel like I'm missing something, and would appreciate it if someone could help me figure out what exactly.
Thanks in advance. Tsanir |

yes... with the Osprey's bonus it will out mine a retriever..... stay in the Osprey till you get a covetor or hulk. Unless you want to give up some yield so you don't have to watch the cycles as much.....

Will a Retriever with one MLU (using a CPU mod, according to what I've heard) get any better, or is it ultimately an exercise in futility?
I guess it might be the wish for the "yay I'm in a barge!" factor talking here, since I'm still some forty plus days away from the Covetor. Tsanir |

Its hopeless, stick with your cruiser. The only advantage to the barge is the 3 minute cycles, other than that the cruiser wins out. First off its cheaper to replace, faster, and more durable. I wish CCP would look at the retriever and the procurer in terms of use.

tier 2 barge beats a osprey.
6x miner II = 2x strip miner I
Barge gets another +3% per lv bonus.
If you have the skills you can get t2 mining laswers for more or even t2 cystals for more then that.

I admit I havent done the math, but what lvl do you have his cruiser skill to make 6 miner II's the same as 2 strip miners?

Cruiser V. From the mining ship bonus os +20% per lv, it makes it +100% or 2x. The ship can use three mining lasers, or am I mixing it with the matar mining ship?

Also you gotta look at skills. Do you have higher mining skills and astrogeology that could distort your figures?
I had the same delema recently and this is the conclusion i came to.
A reteriver is better for some one aiming for barges. a fully skilled osprey is very good and gives a reteriver a run for it's money. But you need rank 5 caldari curisers. Now if you are plaing to get a Covetor you will naturaly get the skills to fly a reteriver when you are training for it. But to max out your osprey you will probably spend an extra 10 days getting skills to make it better and these skills wont help you get your Covetor.
Unless you already have rank 5 curisers go for a reteriver. not worth maxing an osprey out.
Math: (I'm only asssuming enough skills to fly the ship and the ship bounes, actual figures will be higher, but didnt calculate because they will cancel out) Over 3 mins A reteriver will mine - 1177.2 rank 1 Osprey - 648 rank 2 Osprey - 756 rank 3 Osprey - 864 rank 4 Osprey - 972 rank 5 Osprey - 1080

Edited by: Tsanir on 16/03/2007 10:39:36 My relevant skills are as follows:
Caldari Cruiser - Level III Spaceship Command - Level IV Industry - Level V (finishes today) Mining - Level V Astrogeology - Level IV Refining - Level V Science - Level IV
I'll also have Mining Barge to Level III by tomorrow (so I can fly the Retriever anyway), then I intend on going for Astreogeology V (12 days, 16 hours), sticking a +3 perception implant in, training Mining Barge to Level 5 (almost a month) and then Exhumers sometime in late April/early May.
The problem here is that 540 m3 base yield from each Strip Miner I sounds great until you factor in the Osprey's boni plus the three minute cycle, at which point the three Miner IIs with an MLU actually seem to beat it...
I should have reminded to ask my corpmate about his mining skills, though. Tsanir |

:) train for the barge. The only thing that outmines covetor whit 3 stips II`s is rokh whit 8 miner II`s and lots of MLU.

IMO the cruisers shouldnt even get near the retrievers yield, but that could just be me.
im not sure how much difference you`ll get between the retriever and osprey when you are using T2 strip miners.. the best ye can find, whatever.. but im hoping the difference is worth it

Set them both up in Quickfit, however you need, then try loading them into my mining calc. If you update the prices to what they are in your region, it will be able to price out which one is better. ------

I'm currently trying to piece together exactly which calculations put the Osprey over the Retriever and vice versa. Just to be sure I went out and mined a single cycle of Scordite in my current Osprey.
I got 3024 Scordite, or 453.6 m3. EVE-MEEP says that, with my current skills, a Retriever with two Strip Miner Is and no MLUs will mine 1,907.06 m3 or 12,713 Scordite per cycle. 12,713 / 3 = 4327 Scordite per minute (or 1,907.06 / 3 = 635.6 m3) , which seems to point to the Retriever actually being superior.
Anyway, this will all be moot since I've already got the Strip Miner Is and my aforementioned corp leader is kindly going to manufacture me the Retriever, so I should have it figured it out by tomorrow as soon as I finish Mining Barge level 3. If it yields less, then so be it, I'll only have to purchase one Strip Miner when I get in the Covetor. Tsanir |

I just left out the MLU to see if it was better than the Osprey even without it. I don't have Electronics V and haven't looked into the specifics of the 1x MLU setup so I just went for the lowest common denominator. I'll probably fit one if it is at all possible. Tsanir |

Okay... I'm less than a day away from the barge, now I'm just wondering whether I should fit Strip Miner IIs with tech 1 crystals when I get the chance... sounds a bit of a stretch for only a few more m3 per cycle... every little bit helps, though, I guess. Tsanir |

Also, is there a reason that EVE-MEEP actually decreases the yield when you change the amount of mining upgrades from 0 to 1? It works fine over 2, though...
T1 mining crystal increases 8% roughly and a T2 roughly increase 13% but it is only for one ore at a time.
