Bah, AGAIN! Everytime I decide to create new character, I get this stupid message when everything is done... of course all work is lost.
I guess face and name takes me a bit longer than server is willing to wait for client's reply since last step, but ffs how hard it would be to add some sort of "keep connection alive" to character creation process?
I liked how character creation was re-made, but I can't believe this damn annoyance is still there.

I agree. I always have to do it a second time. I have learnt to take a screen shot once im satisfied with the final look ( this is very very important to me and can take quite a while) and then just recreate it the next time round. A "keep connection alive button" would be freakin sweet.

It's been so long that I've actually made a new character, that I had totally forgotten about that.
Yeah, it's really annoying. Spend forever getting not only the portrait just how you want it, but also the skills set up, only to have the thing say "Connection Lost" once you get to the final bit.
I think that was how I ended up with this "Haven't slept in days" look that Roy has. By the third attempt I was so annoyed with it that I just flew through the choices just to make sure I didn't lose connection.

i would like to be able to see some numeric values to remember exactly which settings i used. visually matching the lighting and skin tone options against a screenshot is quite difficult.
it would also be friggin sweet if there was some way to preview what the final in-game portait will look like in all 3 sizes. perhaps at least show a box around where the portrait will be cropped from? the one it shows on the final page is not one of the standard sizes used in game, and it resets your character's position when you go back to tweak it.
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ Take away the risk and it would make flying around in space utterly pointless.
Take away the flying around part and you make EVE into a space themed spreadsheet application. |
It is VERY frustrating to spend 10+ minutes creating your character to be told there is no server connection. You have to try and remember all the choices and settings for the second time which is then a test of speed before the connection is lost.
I've experienced this myself. If you take way too long it times you out at the end....which sucks.
CCP should give a button for hashing creation details into the clipboard. If anything bad happens then restart the creation and paste the hash value to recreate the custom character at the save point. --------- Technica impendi Caldari generis. Pax Caldaria!
IIRC, this never happened before Red Moon Rising. Whilst I can see why there's a timeout in character creation (leaving character creation open on a client, stuffing a login slot, causing more lag, etc etc), a notice of this problem would be nice to begin with. -
Necro-ish... But please tell me this isn't still a problem.
After all that reworking of the character creation screens they did in revelations I, it still times out like it did with the RMR client?
It IS still a problem. I had to try four times before the server would let me finish this character. When I was donr I had to have a beer and loose my agression in a few rounds of GoW.
Edited by: Xaen on 15/11/2007 15:48:53 How a bout a "Save portrait" option that simply saves the current portrait configuration to a cache that you can use later? That way if you find several faces you like during your char creation you can just save them for use on other characters later. Or if your connection dies, you can just grab saved configuration and resume. None of this "show numbers so you can recreate it later" manual hooey. -- Support fixing the EVE UI | Suggest Jita fixes
I'm pretty sure that if you click the "check availability" button on the name page it resets the timer, so just make sure you keep flicking forward to do that from time to time. |
Yes, CCP should make the character creation process offline mode, so you actually log into the game when your character is done, or you could make him/her in offline mode and save your avatar, and launch upp eve-online and load your settings, will make it go alot faster, beacuse alot of people really want to take thier time with the face and try diffrent things etc.
That's exactly what SOE did in Ever Quest II; and though I don't much admire SOE I will say it was a GREAT idea. I'm a real nut about my portrait and I'm never quite satisfied with how it looks (I probably make a new one once every other month.). I have lost some really really nice portraits over the past year or two simply because of the "time out" and it's always wildly frustrating.
I doubt they're going to fix this as it will pretty much be moot come Walking in Stations.
Do what I do now. Take however long you need, and *before* you click onto the "check availability" screen, hit print screen. ;o) Paste into paint, or you can even ck your Eve Capture/screenshots folder, and wa la! All your head, jaw, eye etc. settings, color scheme, etc. are all captured and saved.
Then leave that picture out full size, if Eve has disconnected you when you go to check availability on the name, and fire up the Eve client. It is WAY faster to get back to where you were with your avatar when you have all the settings in front of you. Even finding the lighting again is much easier when you can directly compare the coloring to the pic.
