Edited by: Yiv on 18/03/2007 13:53:36 A professional killer is an Assassin?
A professional soldier makes money from killing?
Think before you flame?
It was just a request.
Are you offering your services or sarcasm?
A mercenary is a person who takes part in an armed conflict and "is motivated to take part in the hostilities essentially by the desire for private gain and, in fact, is promised, by or on behalf of a Party to the conflict, material compensation substantially in excess of that promised or paid to combatants of similar ranks and functions in the armed forces of that Party"
Private gain could mean loot in this instance, bragging rights or the thrill of podding someone.
So yes I am looking for a merc corp

There are so many merc corps out there, that I'm sure someone will want to prove themselves with a free contract to get their name known.
How else ca you claim to be better than the competition without a free sample?
When I go to tesco I taste the cheese before buying it at the deli counter.
It's common sense advertising, companies give freebies away all of the time.

Since there are many who wish to hire Mercs but are too poor to afford them perhaps a fund can be set up. Here is the idea:
A number of corps agree to donate a certain amount of isk towards a fund, they form a membership. There is no bank or collection of isk but rather each member corp pledges to donate a certain amount of isk towards the fund at any given time. Members that wish to hire a Merc corp but are too poor to do so can apply to the fund. Once approved the isk is sent not to the corp requesting but rather is paid on behalf towards a reputable Merc corp that is kept on a kinda retainer, or Merc corps can bid on the contract.
Essentially by poorer corps pooling their isk they can make it possible to hire Mercs. Of course the fund can take donations from charitable corps that wish to help. Ideally it would be good to have a bank that collects the funds and that those funds be allowed to build via investment, however there is too big a risk of scams or thievery.
Anyhow the idea needs to be thought through to close up any possibility of exploit, but I think it could work. ***

No problems. I know there is no flamage intended and I'd never take constructive criticism personally anyway.

RL to Eve comparisons. Eve does this by default as the concept of corporations is a real life phenomenom.
Professional soldiers are salaried so don't get money from killing, as often a soldier can go a whole career without killing or engaging in warfare but yet they still remain a professional killer.
You get a free ship from the starter corp.
Often people are kind enough to give you ISK and a free ship if you join their corp.
Often when I'm drunk I'll give away ISK and ships to new characters.
I must stop drinking Jack Daniels whilst playing Eve!

Actually its fairly common practice for new mercenary corps to start off with a free contract or two in order to obtain some references.

Okay, i am in fact a real life professional soldier (military) there's a differece between that and a merc. mercs are in it solely for profit. no other reason. professional soldiers are in it because of a s ense of duty higher than themselves, which is completely impossible from what i've seen of eve. now that that's hopefully settled.
there's a difference between lobbing a few million ISK around and going to war.you're probably never going to find anyone willing to take their entire corp to war for free without knowing you personally.
beyond that there's the whole "you get what you pay for" rule

That was the point I was trying to make. There is a big difference between a soldier and a merc, but both are professional killers. Professional soldiers remain professional killers even if they don't fire a shot in anger and get paid a salary and not money in return for killing.
You could argue that professonal soldiers do go to war for private gain from the point of view that they are being altruistic and defending their country and way of life.
I got the NATO Kosovo medal in 2000 without firing my rifle once. I gained alot from the experience.

I've had some replies which is good. So I think this proves that you can get a freebie in Eve if you look for it.

All depends what it is you want doing. As stated, new merc corps usually cut their teeth on a freebie to make their mark. Timing is everything.
Carlsberg dont make Eve Pilots, but if they did, i wouldnt be one of them.

And the best part is, if the people you have the "free mercs" war dec start whining, then KIA might go do a contract against your free mercs for FREE! Yay!

LOL I doubt that will happen, our "order book" is pretty full for the next few weeks.
One comment I would just like to make is that like real life, as far as mercs are concerned, You generally get what you pay for...

Yeah, you guys were pretty bored when you did that to us (my old corp anyway). Was like 2 years ago though, I'm not bitter or anything
