Every time I check the forums, there is "OMG CCP PLZ NERF XXX" thread started up. Most are posted only because the player couldn't beat another player, so assumed that the ship/mod needs to be nerfed.
True, some warrant a look like NOS, and the Nano fad has been addressed with out killing Intys. What I don't like is that there is a thread to nerf something for almost every ship and module. Cloaks (the fact you can see me at all in local is wrong when I am cloaked) seem to be a recent focus. People start a new thread every day complaining and whining, in many cases repeating a thread/whine that was posted earlier.
This thread is for all to put there whining "OMG I WAZ WTFPWND by a blaterthron in my covetor, NERF GALLENTE OR I QUIT EVE!" type complaints (those are quite hilarious actually). This way, real issues can be easily spotted and addressed by CCP. Unfortunatly, most will see their whining and inability to realize that you can't win every fight as a legitament reason and post seperately but it's worth a shot.
I have been playing for almost a year now, and I love Eve. This is the most versitile and rewarding player experience imho, but if CCP listened and complied with all the nerf requests we would be left with a version of checkers (but both sides red, until that was "nerfed").
If you lose a fight to a 3 year player and have only been playing for 3 months, that's how it goes. Lord knows I have lost way more ships than I have killed, but I enjoyed every minute of it.
Oh, NERF CARGO EXPANDERS!!!!11!!

I've been playing online games for over a decade and must say the the #1 reason I moved from one game to another is because the endless cycle of nerfs made each of those games unenjoyable and some even unplayable. Yes, minor tweaks may be required but the only thing that needs an across the board categorical nerf is the nerf-whiners.

Edited by: flaming phantom on 19/03/2007 05:45:33 ihave to agree, i odnt think ive been very fond of any of the nerfs they have save a few (i.e. warp core stab nerf) which i hated t the time but grew to love. all these people whining about cloakers and nos's and nanophoons and whatnot are annoying me. i have had each one of those used on me and i died miserably, but guess what? i dont care, its a game
edit: o yea and those local haters really tick me off

I think that nerfing things that make physical sense is fine. Take the nano-thing, can a wheel loader (large construction equipment) go as fast as a Porche? No! Let's say you added a supercharger to each of these machines, hell lets say you added 5 superchargers to the wheel loader, assuming the engine didn't blow up, would it go as fast as a Porche? No! So a BS going as fast and being as manuverable as a frigate sized ship makes zero sense.
That being said, some nerf's (such as those requesting a NOS nerf) put me on the ambivalent side. I fly mainly Amarr (99% of the time) and so NOS is just brutal against my ships, but then again I fly a Pilgrim, and so in that case I love NOS. Being on both sides, though, I see that the weapon is overpowered, it is basically a "turn me on and worry about something else" button which is basically an I-win switch against Amarr and Gallente ships mainly, and maybe Caldari blaster boats.
Some of the other nerfs are annoying, but people will always gripe about things that affect their gameplay. I flew in the days when lasers were feared, and a gank-a-geddon made any other ship run away, and now how many Amarr "whine" threads are there because those things were seriously nerfed. All this because people who didn't fly Amarr got tired of getting owned by Amarr pilots. Just as EW was recently nerfed because non-Caldari pilots complained at how much it sucked that you couldn't lock a target to fight.
All in all, nerfing should be avoided whenever possible but there are really times a nerf helps keep the game interesting because people have to think of good ways to come up with a decent fitting. What if everyone in the game flew nano-nosing-drone-boats, how interesting would that be?

The problem is the simple fact that the game has to be made "Enjoyable" by the general public, and the general public at large are incredibly idiotic, and therefore, need their hands held.
But the opposite can be true as well. The fact of the matter is, no matter how dedicated the Devs are to testing things out ((Not been in EVE long so can't speak for the Devs here.)) there are always a lot more players than Devs. And the smart players are usually distributed amongst those who truely love the game and those who love themselves. The former will help test things, find imbalances, and have them fixed before they hit the game. The second will take note of imbalances, find ways to use them to their advantage, and let them slide into the game so they can use them.
This second group is usually VERY dedicated to finding and using any strategy they can, regardless of how "cheap" it may be. They're hard to counter. The nerf bat, at this point, is the only weapon the Devs have.

I believe the term "nerf" comes from one of the early MMORPGs (can't remember which). There was a patch that greatly reduced how much damage weapons did in the interest of making PvP last longer. So somebody said, "It's like we've got Nerf swords or something," and the verb "to nerf" was born.

Oh, interesting! If that is how it came about.

I apply the nerfbat to this thread!
It's a noble idea, but it won't work. So in that regard, it's not really a constructive post.
