Well, I tried iventing a module with a max-run BPC, the best decryptor, and best base item. All my skills are at LVL4. However, instead of starting my invention, I get the following message:
"This job cannot result in an output blueprint. The reason might be that the metalevel of your input blueprint is too high or that there are no items in the same metagroup with a higher metalevel."
Metalevel and metagroups...holy batman, I thought I understand eve jargon quite well, but I guess I was wrong

A meta item is another way of saying named T1.
So a 'Carbine' 200mm autocannon is a meta version of the 200mm autocannon 1
And a meta group, is well all of the possible meta items, so for our 200mm autocannon that would be carbine, gallium, scout and prototype.
As for having an invention failure due to a too high metalevel, I havent got a clue. It would depend on what you were inventing and what ingredients you added.

I'm using the best named (non-faction, non-cosmos, non-officer) base module. So what you're saying the the best item is too good? Interesting

Um isnt the max runs on a bpc used in invention limited? to like 15 and a different number for say ships/rigs or something to that effect?
I remember it being like 40run bpc's then it got nerfed and todays patch will unnerf it to 40 agian, could that be why?

it usually means you are using a bpc which has no tech 2 equivalent.

I've seen those t2 modules on the market, they're not even that rare

i'd the same matter with caracal bpc ME 44 PE 15 run 15 (max run for this kind of item i think)
my skill caldari encryption are to lvl 4
Caldari Starship Engineering to lvl 5
i provide Caracal vessel and decryptor for less miss but nothing the message appear

Some of the BPCs are not inventable, its slowly being fixed
If there is no T2 item on the market
OR if the tech 2 blueprint doesn't have a market entry
OR if the tech 1 and tech 2 items are not linked on the meta level no invention can occur.
Max run BPCs give more runs when invention is successful.
Atm (i.e. prior to todays patch) ME/PE research had no effect on the outcome. Something seems to change with every patch.
