Hi peeps
This is a kinda of curosity question. If someone on EVE was to rename their RL name to one of EVE, how would we tell which name is suited to a male or female?
for Example
Minokawa Tengu Vigil Hyena Sabre Talwar

I would like to thank the OP for opening the can of worms, shaking it as hard as they could, and then throwing it around like glitter.
A name has no assigned gender - that's a societal influence. You can call yourself anything you like. I, personally, wouldn't name myself Maulus, but hey, whatever floats your boats.
Eve is like an addiction; you can't quit it until it quits you.

Wow, STK Scientific. Didn't realise you guys were still around... o7
As to the question: animals, real or mythical, are unisex I guess. For gods and goddesses, go with the original sex. Don't call your child "Rifter".
Unless you're a yank, in which case 'unisex' is probably a taboo word, and this whole discussion is biased towards "cis-gendered privilige". |

Guess we have too few true nautical people playing EVE.
A ship is always called a "she". The early term for a ship, specifically in Latin, was the word "navis," which was a feminine term which translates as "ship." By extension, when referring to a sea-going vessel, crew and captains came to use feminine pronouns when referencing the ship directly. So, rather than a gender neutral pronoun like "it," the ship became "she." This translated later into English as a simple tradition, though potentially because English was once also known for having a number of gender specific nouns for objects. This is universally used no matter the language.
course, with today's generation always getting upset about something, perhaps EVE uses different rules............
To buck the popular trend, I began to Rage Start instead of Rage Quit.
...and every time I get another piece of Carbon, I know exactly what CCP is getting this Christmas.

In my language we have many names for ships.
Krypa - she +üajba - she Statek - he Okr-Öt -he
What is interesting the -he names are more formal, while -she names are more like taken fromn other languages and mean old ship in bad condition. As like with time the gender of ship would be changing, from he to she. I think we can call it transgender and leave there.

The Nautical guy got a like as that is the standard way of naming but as for actual names these days its not a huge issue anymore except whatever country you are froms banned names list. Yes most countries have them.
There are many Google entries for strangest names people name their kids. But in the end its really up to you as a parent... course the therapy bills and other hassles might add up over time if your kid ends up hating you for it.
Have you heard anything I've said?
You said it's all circling the drain, the whole universe. Right?
That's right.
Had to end sometime.

for Example
Minokawa Tengu Vigil Hyena Sabre Talwar
from their point of origin:
the Minokawa was a giant bird that was said to be able to consume the sun. since its mythical it doesn't have an specified gender.
Tengus are always male.
Vigil is a role, not really a name. same as vigilant or vindicator. so it must be unisex
Hyena is either male or female
Sabre and Talwar are weapons, which are usually female. unless you talk in spanish which can come with male pronouns for some of them "un sable" = "a(male oriented "it") sabre"
i like to look at ship names as more of a "hull class" bracket. so for example:
"Coreli Guardian Protector" is the ship name, but hull class: Tristan
something like that.
now if you want to give them pronouns is up to you.

In English vehicles are often referred to as female; probably a carry over from ships being historically referred to as she.
The use of gender to represent inanimate objects or identity is seen elsewhere in society, for example some countries are referred to as female or represented by a female icon; obvious ones being that Russia has the motherland, the UK has Britannia, France La Marianne etc. Some countries go the other way and are represented by male icons or phrases, fatherland being the most common and used by Holland, Germany, Denmark, Greece, Iceland and many others.
Others are gender neutral eg the US having both Lady Liberty and Uncle Sam as icons to represent the nation.
TL;DR it's a cultural thing
Civilised behaviour is knowing that violence is barbaric, but paying other people to do it is business.

English language does NOT have male/female designations associated with objects. Your question cannot be answered.
You CAN, if you want, ask this question on the French or Spanish forums. |
