I personally use antimatter, shorter range but much more damage. Although it is the most expensive.

Edited by: Ebedar on 21/12/2003 22:07:21 If you do the 'Show Info' on any type of ammo it will tell you what sort of damage it causes and what range bonus/deficit it gives you.
You also need to bear in mind that each gun has an 'optimal range' - the range at which it works best/is more likely to do good damage.
The ammo you use depends a lot on how you're using your ship to fight. If, for example, you want to kit out for long range but don't have enough range from the guns, your skills or your modules, the ammo you choose can give you a range bonus (but it will give less damage).
If you can maintain a consistent range between you and your opponent, then choose ammo that works best at that range (i.e. ammo that increases/decreases your optimal range as appropriate).
The thing to remember is this: long range ammo gives less damage, but can keep you out of harms way when it comes to lower ends NPCs; shorter range ammo gives more damage but you have to be willing to get closer to use it.
Not sure how coherent any of the above sounds, but I'm sure it can be clarified if it's unclear

When I started out fighting npc rats, I used iridium in my 150mm railguns. The damage is low, but it's very long range. I could stay entirely out of the range of the rats and just pound away at them.
