I just resubscribed to the game last night, so I'm trying to fumble my way around remembering how to do certain things. I was in a player corporation when I left, and quit it before leaving (didn't know them very well). Now I'm in some corporation that I don't know or haven't worked with before.
Is there a way to leave it and join another NPC corporation? Do I perhaps need to get a better rating with them, so focus on doing missions with them?

When you leave a player-run corporation (or it closes its doors), EVE automatically places you in an NPC-based corp. This is probably what you're in now.
The only way out of your current NPC corp is to join another player corp, or to make your own.

The game's database doesn't accept a null value for a player's corporation; it's designed so you're always in a corporation. You start out in the starter "school" corporation, and then you can join a player corporation. If you leave the player corporation, you are automatically placed in a (not really random) NPC corporation. There's no purpose to this NPC corporation other than to hold you there so the database doesn't get messed up.
You can join another player corporation if you wish, but whenever you leave a player corp, you'll likely be placed in this same NPC corp by default.

AH ok thanks guys :)
I'm not really looking to join a player corp right now. I had a bad experience last time with the corp immediately going to war because of another corp wanting to grief new players. I'm not really up for that right now.

CCP hasn't built (actually, I should say "CCP has removed") any tools to let us pick what NPC corp we're placed in.
