I could not find to this day an information related to gathering agro in missions. This is important for efective group complexing, mission running, ratting. Is there any data regarding to what actions (shooting, draining, deploying drones etc.) gather what kinds of agro or how best to keep agro?

i find that once i shoot an npc, that npc group aggros
being in close proximity sometimes does it, but thats not always the case. so i think a sure fire way of aquiring it would be to shoot

You do missions with a friend. You agree that one will be the tank and the other damage dealer or cleric. Tank warps in, shoots, gets agro - everything's fine. But at one point the rats decide that they dont like the the tank any more, and agro the cleric/damage dealer, and here he could be in trouble (as well as the tank a little later). Now, what would keep the agro on the tank? What generates agro points?

I've never seen rats switch aggro in Eve. Coming from DAoC where aggro had to be carefully managed, it was a bit odd.
Once you have them flashing yellow / red in your overview, they will stay that way until they (or you!) are dead.

Or the player aggroed goes out of targetting range of the NPC, then they will switch to the next target.

My experience is different. Was doing lvl3 angel strike storyline and decided to kill the BSs with a friend that flied a nighthawk. He had the agro most of the time but at one time one BS locked my Drake and started attacking (changed target). In this case i could easily tank it, but maybe some other time it would make much difference. So there must be some kinda rule for it. This was not the only time.

Seriously mate, I've done a lot of missions and never noticed an NPC switch once he'd already picked a target.
I haven't been involved with shield or armour transferring very much, so couldn't really comment on "healing" switching aggro.
I've never seen any form of Eve guide to managing aggro, which along with my experiences is why I don't believe the NPCs are currently clever enough to understand the concept.

EVE rats don't simply switch aggro like in many games, they simply can't. What you might have experienced:
1. If you move way far away from a rat, they can lose their lock on you, which makes them lose their aggro. 2. Sometimes rats spawn during a mission/complex/whatever, these new rats will aggro whatever they like.

I've seen this before in a lvl 4 guristas xtra where the guy tanking had at least said he had all agro on the last room (non bonus stage) and some of the rats just decided that hey, they'd rather shoot me instead. They tend to go for the weakest link a lot of the time.
i've also had it happen while mining in 0.0 where our guy chaining the rats had a BS spawn, start shooting him, then completely change it's mind and start attacking me from 90km away fortunately it was a serpentis rear admiral or whatever teh megathron one is, and it only hit me once... wrecking for 590 damage and nearly turning my poor alt's retriever into space dust Mods nerfed my monkey :( *evil point* |

Edited by: HongHi Choi on 27/03/2007 20:11:52 So from the example above (as well as my own) we can see that the pirates DO have some kind of inteligence, but we just dont know how it works.
So is there someone who does?

If NPC battlecruisers lock (and some even shoot) you at about 120 kms, then wouldnt it be silly to think that a BS lost a lock on a nighthawk that was hiting him? And 2. - it was the BS we were attacking at a time, so im quite sure it's not a spawn
If noone knows, can the DEVs at least say wheather there is threat/agro and some kinda logic that makes rats change agro or not? (im not asking to say how it works... but am not going to mind if you do )

Yeah but what is the target range on NPCs? Here is a pic of me getting hit by Gurista cruisers that were 117km away (and actually they engaged me from even further out before I thought to take a screenie). Have had Gurista frigs hit me from well past 80km. Note that I did nothing to them. This was on Blockade (IIRC) and they just aggroed wherever they were...damn annoying.
As for switching aggro I have noticed that I do not necessrily get aggro from everyone in a group anymore. Watch your Overview closely. Most ships in the group will be flashing with a box around them indicating they are after you but one or two guys seem to hold back. I have lost more than a few drones lately because once popped these holdbacks seem to go after them.
Not 100% sure on that but something to watch for. New NPC AI may just have it that several NPC hold out till directly agressed and will pick a secondary target (another player or drones) if one presents itself.

npc rats can also switch targets if you use e-war against them , making them lose their target, sometimes when the relock , the lock a different player.
Team work is essential... It gives the other team something ELSE to shoot at!

I complete agree and am aware of this, but does ewar gather threat? (btw, my friend and me werent using ewar, so that was not the case in our situation)
Still waiting for the answer...

hello choi. i think that the rats are more suceptable to attack the owner of the mission (ie when u were doing angel strike with midas, u were mission owner). as for NPCs switching aggro, i have never seen that happen, but maybe it is a factor of range, dps on it, and range to original target. are u sure midas was not using his favorite officer's ecm, and he lost the targetting?
maybe this could also be part of CCP's big plan to make missions, bigger, harder, and more intelligent. ~~~~~~ thats a hamster, a generator used by CCP ~~~~~~ |

Edited by: Zalathar on 29/03/2007 07:19:34 then it was probably (if no ECM was involved) a case of mission ownership, distance, and damage
