base research material time was 8 weeks 3 days 6 hours for me it took 7 weeks 4 days 8 hours per ME

To be fair, you could buy up say, 5, then research them. 1b profit per, so thats 5b in 2 months. Not bad?

With carriers what do you save on when researching ME.
Are there any Minerals that you need or just components to build.
Sorry, I'm new at this.

yeah - there's a step in between: minerals -> capital components (like 'capital armor plates') -> capital ship
all plain t1, though: just mining and BPOs
with the rounding down of waste, ME2 saves all of it except the drone bays (everything else is 10 components or less)
-> instead of 61mil+ , only 4mil wasted

if i may recommend this tool - you can edit the prices for ingredients - however, you might want to run the component bpos first 'cause it doesn't do that step for you
