Just a quick thread to make all the poor folks feel better. Today, on one level 4 mission that I had not done before I cleared out all the hostiles and was taking down a station to see if the mission objective was inside. I assumed, for no good reason, I know, that all hostiles were gone, so I went afk for a couple of minutes. I came back to a pod. Nothing that dosent happend every day in EVE I guess. However the bill is a bit higher than usual:
Destroyed items:
1 Raven navy issue.
1 Corpum X-Type Heavy Nos.
1 Caldari Navy BCU.
1 Pith X-type Explosive Hardener.
1 Pith X-type Xlarge Shield Booster.
5 tech II cruise launchers.
1 tech II Invulnerability field.
1 tech II PDS
1 Dread guristas CPU.
Luckily I don't violate the "don't fly what you can't afford to lose" rule, and will have another ship to same specc soon enough. Also luckily this particular ship had paid for itself allready... But its still my biggest loss in eve to date, and totally my fault. Losses at current market prices are in the 1.7-2b isk region. Ouchies... And no, no petition
Anyone want to top this shining example of human error?

However I do honest wonder how people can mission so much to get such a huge amount of expensive stuff
I missioned this afternoon to get some badly needed cash, and by the time I was finished Darth was having to drag me away from attacking noobs in Jita

Edited by: RtoZ on 24/03/2007 21:16:34 I've posted on the economics of mission running before. Short version:
One very high specc battleship clearing out missions with minimal warp outs as fast as possible. One high specc salvage battlecruiser for looting as quick as possible. I don't salvage. Money made goes into trade to make more money. It adds up more than people think, and I enjoy making stuff as efficient as possible. The items lost give a clue to just how efficient that mission running ship was. It can clear guristas extravaganza in well under 2 hours (closer to 1 actually), and thats 50m isk+, which makes more isk in trade... which makes more isk in trade... which makes more isk in trade...
Also, the main earner in missions is loyalty points, you can focus on the offers you want. I made 1.2b isk profit on a 2 run navy raven bpc. Thats the key to making money with missions, cashing in on the right offers. Similar profits can be made off the +5 implant offers these days.
Edit: I was killed by krulls henchmen...

Props to you. I have lost a ship the same way which was expensive for me at the time.
And to all the naysayers out there who babble on about how "mission running isn't profitable enough" and that "CCP hates PvE": this is just one more example that you're obviously just doing it wrong.

I know i suffered a horrible lose the other day. I lost a hulk because I went afk for 10 minutes to fix my mothers computer. I cam back and my hulk was no where to be seen and my pod was sitting there smiling. worst part was this was in a .7 sec system. and to top it off, I just got in it today. Luckily, it was insured, and I had enough spare cash to buy a new one. -=#=- Angry beer bottles make Kaemonn a sad panda

Better than 20k for 500M ship (for that is the price I bought it at both times). Let me just say, my wallet looks alot like my desk right now, bare essentials. -=#=- Angry beer bottles make Kaemonn a sad panda

Heh, I helped to do the same mission today for a friend, there are like 2 more waves of various stuff spawning at different stages, they have high dps too. Also there is a nasty surprise at the very end that almost waporized our salvage ship....lmao.
Curious though, why don't you fit for a perma tank setup? Like a Gist B type booster with faction shield boost amplifiers? Then you can go afk if you so desire.

Why were you in a Hulk without the "Official Hulk Tank" setup? I mean, that is practically what it is for...doesn't mine all that much better than a Covetor but what it does have it tankability. With its tank running it can weather many 0.0 spawns. A 0.7 spawn you could let it sit all day and it wouldn't die. Sure the tank adds another hefty price tag to the ship but still a lot less than a new Hulk.
Also, you probably should have waited to buy a Hulk. Everyone and their dog are trying to Invent Hulks now that the latest patch allows it. Hulk prices are bound to come down dramatically. They may never be cheap but not 500-600 mil either I expect.
All that said I can't claim non-noobishness. A few nights ago after getting home from the pub (clue right there) I fell asleep (ok, passed out) testing a fitting out on my Absolution in a L3 mission. Woke up and logged back in to my pod. What cargo survived popped. Not near as valuable a loss as the OP but still about 400 mil down the drain for no good reason. Ah well...
I petitioned CCP for a breathalyzer to prevent me from playing in that state in the future. Haven't heard back yet.

I was intending to try out a permatank setup soon [tm]. The Gist booster is a bit more expensive than the pith and I like to have high resists over shield boosting. It is very rare for me to let my guard down and go afk like that, but as this whole episode shows it only takes once.
Maybe on my next CNR now.
Anyways, the whole point here is its just a game... where I lost a 2b isk ship

I'm rather surprised that an obviously experienced mission runner as yourself would go afk in a new mission that you don't know the ins and outs of yet.

This is the perfect place for this thread.
In the mission forum it would merely get a barrage of "zomg noob" posts. Here i gives all the pirates a good chuckle.

Edited by: RtoZ on 25/03/2007 15:54:37 It also gives the pirates a clue of what's involved in running level 4 missions as an eve career. Sure, its lower risk, but when the low risk catches up with you... ouchies...
I was gonna ask why this was moved here but then I realised and laughed. Well, 100k lp to go for my next cnr offer... time to get the regular raven out of mothballs...
Allthough most CNR's pay for themselves, and yes, I'm richer than most EVE players, it would still be nice to be able to insure the thing. I mean, its insurance is way lower than the isk you have to put in to accept the offer... EVE is like the oposite of the real world, the more expensive the item, the less security you get. Noobs can allmost lose ships and make a profit...

I have combat ships more expensive than that tbh.

Expensive is a relative term I guess. A lot of people are in a position where a 500m ship is a dream, while others can afford to replace 5b ships every other week. Depends which loop you're in.

It is easy to perma-run a gist booster on a cnr.
Try that for next time and don't switch it off.
