Well, I know it works like this: you click the passive targeter, you click the target, the target is locked, passive targeter goes offline.
Now, how this really works ? first, what these two things mean:
activation cost 5 Energy activation time / duration 5,00 sec
5 Energy is likely 5 energy per 5 secs, no problems here, but what the "activation time / duration" is ?
I mean, it does not seem you lock the target in 5 secs no matter what. But the module does go offline after you are done targerting. So what do these 5 secs mean ?
Next question: "how this looks ?" That is, how it looks from the receiving side ?
Do you get any hint you are being tagreted ? Do you see you are targered after the lock is upon you ? Do you see anything if any scanning module is used on you ?

The player you target won't know you are targeting him, nor will he see you use any scanning modules on him. Only when you use offensive modules on him will you start blinking red. Passive targeter is good for the surprise factor, but after that is gone it doesn't help much. Some people don't even bother with a passive targeter and simply put a sensor booster in its place.

So there is no way to know if you have been targered by passive targeter and someone is, say, watching your bars or scanning your ship ?
And what about cloaking ? Can you do that if you have been passively targeted ?

Passive targeters are generally useful for only one thing, and thats determining if suicide ganking a freighter/hauler in empire is worth it.
If you're in a hauler or freighter, and you're carrying billions of isk worth of stuff, you'll probably logoff immediatly if some newb corper targets you and runs a cargo scan. However with a passive targeter, the hauler pilot will have no idea something's afoot until hes already been caught by the suicide gank squad (or fleet in case of a freighter, )
Other than that passive targeters are basically not useful.

Very usefull for cloaking ships like cov ops or recons. If you passive target you can get off a bomber volley, scan a ship config for your gang mates, or start damping/ewar before they know whats going on. And then they have to manually target you still. If whatever you try doesn't work, you can recloak quickly since they didn't autotarget you back. Excellent defensive module for cloakers.

Passive targeting works like this,
The Minmatar recruit pokes his head out and screams "Over THERE!!!!" to the gunner.

1) You turn it on. 2) The other guy is unaware hes been targeted 3) ????? 4) Profit ------------------------------------- The difference between a Pirate and an Anti-Pirate is that an Anti-Pirate fights ships fitted with guns!

So it doesn't net you a free five-second lock?

You cannot cloak your ship as you are being targeted by someone.
