Has anyone done a guide on minimising your Eve client's overhead.
eg what z-buffer to use, that sort of thing, to minimise CPU and memory.
The objective being to run multiple clients smoother on one PC.
Ta.

Yes, many times and all are pathetic in terms of results. What's needed is CCP to put in a slider that gives 100x FPS range, obviously sacrificing detail or something to that effect. Or a definable fixed framerate would be even better imho.

Thanks for the reply. I thought this one had fallen back to page 5 'cos I was boring people to death!
I'd also like a lot more options. Like turning off textures etc. Deadspace clouds. Whatever it is that causes my PC to pause for 10 seconds or so when jumping into a mission area fro starters.
I've got the hefty stuff (I think!) turned off like "sun is occluded by ships" and I guess I'll just have to play around with the z-depth settings.

Yeah, the client's speed is a bit of a crusade for me so that's why you got my bite.

Well if you want to turn off textures and the like, just use 3DAnalyze.

Thanks DS, I've just downloaded that. I'm not 100% sure exactly how that works but I'll have a play.
I'll have to give your RAMdisk cache plan a try too.
.. and I just saw a post saying "Try to increase Buffer size in your prefs ini (Buffer=80). Defaultly its 80MB and increasing it up to half your memory or max 512MB can help remove some lags."
So I might try an optimised setup for when I run one client, and another for when I run 2.
By the way DS, do you still play Ferion? I mumped into you in that game, ooh, must be over a year ago now.

If you play some 3D FPS games, be careful with 3DAnalyze. In many games anticheat software will detect its hooks as illegal cheats (= ban).

OK, thanks, I don't really play any other online games on my PC at the moment.
It's not against the rules for Eve is it? I'm not modifying the client or any of it's files.

Sadly, it's not the 3D code that is the slow part of Eve. Most graphics cards are having a holiday with Eve running.

Yes, it's true. My 3d runs so smoothly it's great. It's the 2d UI that drops my framerate in 1/3.
Wish CCP would optimize it already. It's rediculous.
Even after failure, there can be redemption.

It can't be waiting. For one, it's a stupid thing the for client to be doing when it's got plenty already to keep it busy, and two, CPU utillisation stays at 100% at all times just like all other games of this calibre.
The "waiting for lag" idea is a common and cronic misconception that, I think, has come from streaming media circles. I'd not realised how seriously ingrained the idea had got until I started playing Eve.

There's definately some polling or lack of threading going on in the client code. -------------------------------------------

It just frustrates me so much playing the game that I enjoy so much, that there's clearly something very wrong somewhere.
I got one of the new missions with a ton of broken asteroids in space, and the frame rate dropped to about 7FPS.
As the poster says above, this should be a walk in the park for a modern PC (mine is a Dell XPS gaming machine - 3.2ghz P4, 2Gb memory, decent PCI-E 256Mb graphics - forget the exact card, 10mbit cable connection)
I'd love tougher missions, PvP etc. if I knew the deciding factor in the fight wasn't going to be the PC / network / whatever performance.

You see the problem there is that you brought a dell. Even worse you paid for an XPS
But anyway yea, most lag is not related at all to hardware.

It's actually a very nice bit of kit, and wasn't ridiculously expensive like the latest couple of generations have been (Those Intel Extreme Edition ones are just plain silly IMO).
I've self built the few PCs I had before this ... twin P133, PII 300 overclocked to 450, Athlon 1400, and the Dell is probably the best of the lot. Probably says a lot about my build quality!

Well, just cuz you can't make friends doesn't mean you have to have an alt..... you could
*gasp*
simply make ISK by yourself!
I know alts are uber ISK makers for your Main, or youe hauling slave if you mine or whatever. But with the right amount of training you can solo mishes and make a ton of money.
Or hire someone to scout the system for your... see.. not friends.. business partners...
Oh.. btw.. MMO.. means on some level you have to interact with people..... damn ;-)

I think you'll find the client is very busy slowly crunching data during a stutter. If you mean it should be servicing other tasks while it's struggling then, yep, I aggree.
