I found a basic mission in 0.0 space. It was 16 jumps away. I figured I would try to see if I could reach the mission agent's station, hoping I would move fast enough to avoid getting killed. When I entered the area, before the last one on the way to the station, a ship killed my in seconds.
In order to do mission like this, which was listed as a basic level I mission what would I need to do? ie, do I need to get a battle ship just to get to a mission like the one I was trying to get to or is there another way to get to mission like this or to avoid the combat to reach the mission area? Or to enter the sector of space and be able to navigate away from hostiles, to get to the jump gate to reach the proper coordinates?
Thanks for any assistance.

Simplest advice is- Dont do it! No, honestly, I would not take the risk to move to low sec or 0.0 space just to run lvl 1 missions! Find a 0.5 systems with low level agents and do missions there, or train up your skills or fit WCS before moving to low sec systems. That which does not kill us makes us stronger. Sounds like you got bitten by the "storyline mission as far as possible away from where you are" issue that was around last week.
If I have read correctly and that is what occurred - then basically that is not suppposed to happen.
As to the whole battleship in 0.0 thing - wouldn't recommend that tbh. You are far more likely to die solo in a bs than you are to die solo in a frigate/cruiser. Basically battleships are slow so you die easily to small groups of fighters if you are moving around. It is very difficult to avoid a fight in a battleship in 0.0.
If you enter 0.0 you should consider yourself dead before you start out. Then when you actually die its not so bad :)
If you want to spend some time in 0.0 then you really need a corp that is active in the area so that you can move freely and have backup when things go wrong.
Solo is possible - but as I say - if you consider the ship/pod gone before you start out - then you will not be sad when the inevitable happens :)

When you say "found" - do you mean from a Station based Agent?
In case you didn't know - you can refuse a mission from an Agent in a station without loss of standing - but you have to wait a while before you can reject another one - I think it's 6 hours. The system will warn you if it's too early with a box saying your standings might be effected.

There are reasons why people do lvl1 agents in 0.0. It could be that the Op wants to make a start on Pirate Agents and hence build up standing, since pirate agent LP is worth a hell of a lot more than empire agent LP. Someone in a drake running 0.0 lvl3's makes far more isk/hour than someone in a pimped CNR running lvl4's in Motsu or Salia
As for the storyline thing, are you sure there are any storyline agents in 0.0 for empire factions? I thought only pirate agents should be there - no empire agents at all. --

The mission was for the society of conscious thought. I found the location of the base to talk to an agent, and looked it up and found that it was a basic level I mission. I was in a frigate and a very large ship killed me in seconds, about 3-4 hits with attacks that exploded.
The ship was very big, I assume it was a battlecruiser but it may have been smaller. I was in warp when I got attacked and couldn't fight back and couldn't reach the next gate to get out of the area to get to the mission.
Any suggesstions on what I might try to do to make my frigate harder to hit, fast enough, or resistant to damage enough to get out of the area before I get killed? Or does anyone know of a better way to go about getting to missions like this to avoid the big ships?

From what I can see, all agents for the society of conscious thought are in the FDZ4-A system. That system is very much ran under a NBSI policy and is also a 0.0 gateway system, so it's almost guaranteed that you will get blown up any time you try to go there.

If you end up in a gatecamp that has warp disruption bubble (common at choke points), you'll be dead no matter what. Your best bet would be talking to the local residents and getting a positive standing from them or joining one of their corps (for FDZ4-A that would be the Roadkill and SMASH alliances).
Anyhow, I'd recommend looking for a different corp to do missions for, society of conscious thought only has the agents in that system, and they're all from the Advisory division (which means lots of courier missions, which combined with the fact that the system is a chokepoint will get you into a lot of trouble).
