Do not laugh... I am reformatting my computer which is actually my parents computer. It has windows XP home edition and I want to know what are some good programs to get RIGHT away after installing XP. Also some tips on what to do BEFORE I reformat. I already have a partition of my hard drive I am putting all the stuff I want to keep onto.

A good anti-virus program, Firefox (and remove all links to IE), Office or open office, and whatever else you want.

put windows firewall on straight away, and download avast! antivirus (free home edition). Patch windows straight away, then download all the right drivers for your GPU. Sorted.

Please don't turn this into an Opera/Firefox flamewar.
They're both blindingly fast.

Puhweese. One of them is noticably faster than the other. Or from my viewpoint circa-2002 and on, one has been and still is noticably slower than the other. Someone who looks at websites one at a time wouldn't notice. But I'm sure someone like you who probably has atleast 6 tabs open, flys through RSS feeds, and knows the word skim can be used in the context of reading would.
One of them also doesn't ride the open-source bandwagon. I happen to think that corporate-payrolled programmers can write better code than an open source community. Blasphemy, I know. And I don't have any particular mistrust in the goodwill of Norwegians. Do you? Are all publicly traded companies as evil as Microsoft? Can a software company even possibly be unevil?
And one of them innovates, while the other copies. How many Firefox behaviors/extensions were found on Opera first? And how many the other way around? Is this a valid benchmark of innovation? Is innovation even relevant? Is Apple the only innovative American company? Does Japan own the US?
But honestly use what you want to use, we're all entitled to our own opinions.

So when asked not to start a flame war, you just go right ahead anyway. You sound like a paid shill.
Fail.
To the OP, heres some info on what mom.exe MAY be Linkage
Did you install ATI catalyst drivers? As you just re-installed its probably not anything dodgy, but better safe that sorry. Try removing and re-installing the catalyst drivers maybe? --- --Any sufficiently advanced bureaucracy is indistinguishable from molasses.-- |

Edited by: Iora Wren on 28/03/2007 23:22:00 Im abit of a freak when it comes to this. 3 to 4 times a year for me.
01: Create a folder on the Desktop March-2007, if your as anal as me. 02: Download all the latest drivers for all your relevant hardware 03: Download all windows updates 04: Download essential software. Winzip, WinRAR, Quicktime, Firefox, etc etc 05: Begin going through every piece of software you use moving or copying every file you want kept into the folder You made. 06: Burn this folder to a CD/DVD 07: Ensure this disc works! 08: Totally format the drive, no partitions nothing just a nice clean format. 09: Install windows 10: Install all Windows Updates 11: Install Motherboard drivers, Graphics Card Dirvers and Sound Card Drivers. 12: Install all other relevant software 13: Go through the usual optimizing routines to speed up XP - Generally get it to run the way you like 14: Kick back and enjoy the speedy new slimeline edition XP
I keep all my backups for a year then I generally 'review' them creating just one DVD for that whole year. Ive been doing this for years and I always know where a piece of software or a old file of some description lies.
I would go so far as to say that Mr 13 up there is on of the most important aspects of a fresh install of XP.
Iora goes back to sorting his DVD collection by category in alphabetical order Now what category does Footloose come under again '*** pride' '80's garbage' or 'The perils of sharing your DVD collection with your fiance' hmmmm toughy!

Oh sorry, my mistake. I didn't see Shikari's request. I'm a good person so I would never disagree with anyone. I would also gladly bend over in prison when prisonmates need to have their fun. Anything to make the world a better place so butterflies can sprout out of the ground.
Shikari simply stated (what I think) a misconception caused by a user made opinionated by other (what I think) misconceptions. I simply enumerated all three. If Shikari wants to keep this from becoming a flame war he should simply find basis for his opinion supported by real facts. I will then do the same.

Edited by: Antaris Xenal on 29/03/2007 00:03:09 I am trying uninstalling the CCC and hoping that works. I am now trying to get my computer to give me sound even though it says the sound card thing is installed correctly in the device manager =/ BTW is there anyway you can setup windows to automatically end certain running tasks that automatically start up?
And here is another beefy question I don't know if anyone want's to tackle. My parents use this program called Bsafe which will not let me even watch youtube. I can still get around and look at **** if I wanted to via proxy servers and limewire or bittorrent (not that I want to >_<). And the reason they had it installed was to stop me. The way the program runs scares me tbh. The way it has full control and I cannot figure out any way to stop it. I know these are alot of questions but I am trying to learn more about the computer and ways to fix things and solve problems :)

hey guys, after reading this thread, i think i've just worked out....
Can you move everything onto a partition on the same drive, format the original partition, and install only the basics on the original partition so that you have a clean PC good as new like?
Or perhaps make a partition on the HDD to run just XP and a coupla other programs like Premiere or something, to stop all the other guff slowing things down?
I got my sig snipped again. Can someone make me a new one? |

In my (really really limited) experience, XP doesn't like partitioning in any shape or form. Headaches abound, in that direction.
If you're going to go to all that trouble, you might as well just make your minimalist partition Linux, just keeping your cluttered partition for whatever you're desperate to use XP for. Unless I don't understand what you mean, my dear Admai- you sound a lot more confusing than usual --------

I don't have an anti-virus anymore and have windows firewall disabled and my mcafee firewall disabled.
They are glorified pop-up blockers tbfh, and i don't have attacks, viruses, anything. My dad's PC with it all enabled, including Avast, had...oh..50+ viruses, a Trojan and an attack on his paypal account. If you're careful with what you click, what you browse and what you DL, you'll never have a problem. Viruses don't jsut go "i'lll piiic***....that one!"
The AV's don't remove jack, they just tell you there's a virus. Get a specific program per virus or do it yourself. Rant over

hey, been afk for a few days, forgot to chase this up - so you think partitioning is not good? perhaps just a diddy lil' separate HDD will do the trick better?

I have nothing but windows on my C: then everything else on seperate partitions/drives. That way I can reformat windows' drive, then after installing all my programs I can copy/paste 99% of the old programs folders to replace the new ones. Also if once you've installed windows, you make a ghost image before installing all your drivers and stuff, the next time you do it you don't need to reinstall windows. You just restore the ghost image, then get all your drivers/programs sorted. Also instead of reinstalling your games, just try running them from the old folders from the partitions you didn't format. Most of them work fine. You can always make start menu shortcuts manually.
If you don't know what I mean, say for example all your software is in 'D:\Program Files\'. When you reinstall windows, which is on C:, you rename D:\Program Files\ to D:\Program Files-Old then after installing the programs fresh into a new D:\Program Files you then copy/paste most of the programs from the old folder, into the new one. Most of the programs that keep all their config info in their folder work fine, like winamp, most games, trillian, vlc and stuff. I'm a lazy mofo and if there's a shortcut to be used, I'll use it.
