Edited by: Gungankllr on 28/03/2007 23:57:36 If you're speaking of africanized "killer bees" they inhabit parts of mexico, and colonies are found in the warmer states in the southern areas of the United States.
For the most part when a colony is found, the local authorities take steps to eradicate them, which keeps the populations somewhat down.
They fare far better in warmer climates, which is why there has not been a large spread into the central states and coasts, it's too cold for their liking except in the summertime.
Hope that answered your question.
Edit: Uff da.

Edited by: Mimiru on 29/03/2007 00:01:36 They are quite rampant in the southeast (mostly from Georgia to Virginia), as the local flora has high attraction rates to africanized killer bees. Most of the larger population centers have measures to combat them, the city limits being surrounded by netting, pesticide sprayers on street corners, etc.
In the more rural areas people are forced to protect themselves. most people invest in Kevlar and other high tensile strength fabrics for protection. This protects against occasional attacks by small groups of the bees, but the large swarms with generally rove about the plains are much more deadly. Though the government reccomends the 'Jumping jack' methood of bee killing and frightening, several scientists have come out to say that this has no affect on the bees.
The death toll since 2000 has been steady at around 200 people per year, though there was a large spike in 2002 when the Georgia 'dome' (the netting surrounding most of atlanta, as it is called) failed and allowed a large swarm to enter inner Gerogia. Recently, several community leaders have made public statements saying the failure was caused specifically by the government to eliminate a number of inner city residents (mostly irish-catholics). Actor Mike Myers even went so far as to say President Bush doesnt care about Irish people. This is of course, bull****.
Most of the problems in Iraq can be traced back to lack of manpower. Much of the US National Guard and Reserves are tied up erecting nets around the border to contain the bee threat. Because much of the US infantry training takes place in the southeast (Parris Island for the Marines, Ft. Benning for the Army) as well as drydock facilities for the Naval Atlantic fleet, a number of soldiers have been killed durring training. The bees have caused long term shut down of several military bases due to roving swarms, and this has affected US troop training greatly. ---------

Well, hmm. These bees (specifically the Barakiss Obomis genus) originate from west africa, specifically the Ivory coast, where they are domesticated and harvested for the Ivory content. in 1972, a single queen and drone escaped into the wilds of the savanna and began to colonize (they nest both underground and in hanging structures.) In africa, the queen averaged the size of a human fist, and drones averaging the size of a human thumb. They soon immigrated to The US (via trade winds, from the ivory coast to the carribean, the smell of burning ********* drives them off, then finally to the US, and perhaps onto Britain).
Since arriving in America they have gorged themselves on the local American fast growing flora, and have nearly doubled their average size in the past 12 years, with it expected to grow exponentially. This has become an increasing concern for many of us. They are not only doing untold enviromental damage, but have virtually shut down east coast oil drilling, causing fuel prices to skyrocket across the country. With the presidential elections are upcoming in 2008, several candidates are running on an 'anti-bee' platform. In specific, the democratic senators Hilary Clinton and Barack obama. Because she is a woman, many americans believe she does not have the strength to properly battle the invaders. Othersbelieve Barack Obama's name is to similar to the scientific name of the bees, and assume he is in league with them, especially with him being raised in kenya by a poor bee wrangler.
We'll see what happens in the next few years... ---------

You're right. There's more of a chance of catching africanized killer bees in Popeye's Chicken.

I lived in NC for four years. I hated it. I like the scenery, the ranches, the guns, the beaches and the forests but I hated the swamps, the intense humidity, the hurricanes, the ridiculous twangy accents, the giant mosquitos, the swamp stench that permeates the whole farkin state, THE CHIGGERS (OH GOD NO!!!!), and the tick infestations.

Africanized (spelling?) bees are alive and well. Basically they're ultra agressive normal bees that will follow you 2-300 yards from their hive. We have them here in AZ but they're still pretty rare. The bees are like y2k, something that sound deadly and sensational when spoken by newscasters hoping to pump up their ratings. _______________________________ Idea stolen from DS:

For real? I lived in va a decade ago and there was no sign of them on the east coast. It's insane if they really have spread that far.

I hear about an attack or two every year here in Houston. Still very rare.
I'm much more worried about the Pitbull attacks. Those come about every month. And yet Pitbulls are perfectly legal to keep.

Last I heard they (they being scientists) are attempting to breed out the aggressiveness of africanized bees by transplanting pupae (or larvae I can never remember what stage is which) of less aggressive swarms into the really bad swarms. But generally any reports of hyper agressive bees is treated like a five alarm fire and the hive responsible is destroyed.
They haven't vanished they're just not news worthy anymore, at least until they kill some poor child or adult, that is.

They came. they are still in the south. However we got tired of reporting on them after they didn't wipe out any small towns like the movies and media hype suggested. Some American beekeepers are actually looking and trying to produce honey with them now.

Wtf happened?
I'm being serious, I keep finding broken american's who wont/can't answer this question and it's really getting to **** me off.
I was hiking in a fairly remote part of Arizona in 1993 and stumbled across a ground nest of these in a wash. I had headphones on and stumbled across a Volkswagen carcass overturned in the wash, full of bullet holes. How did it get there? I had no idea but I was out taking photographs (a hobby of mine) and couldn't resist.
After arranging myself to take a very cool photo, I caught some movement out of the corner of my eye.
I look to the left and see a rattlesnake coiled up ready to strike. I froze. I pulled my headphones out and plainly heard the buzzing of it's tail. I slowly backed away from it, and heard another buzzing. Right by my foot was a bee doing something, and 3 feet away, a hole in the ground with lots of bees flying in and out.
The bees were large, the one on the ground was about the size of my thumb.
I almost stepped on it. For those not in the know about these animals, had I done this, I'd be dead.
When one is killed it releases a pheremone. This causes the entire hive to go into attack mode and anything that moves near them in this state is going do be dead very quickly.
I slowly backed away from this party, and never ever wore headphones while hiking again. It's a habit I have to this day lol.

You know whats fun? That parasite that they found in cow dung. Snail comes along eats the dung, the parasite eggs enter it's body. The eggs migrate to its respitory system (lungs) and get covered in mucus. The snail then "coughs" them up in a little lump of mucusy eggs. Ants come along and say "Hey, snail slime rocks!" and they eat it. That night when all the ants start going back to the nest, the ones that ate the parasite eggs divert off into the wilderness on thier own. The now-hatched parasites start to control the ant's mind. They make it climb a stalk of grass, pinch the end in it's pincers and it hangs there til morning. Then it snaps out of it and goes back to normal, until nighttime when it goes to the grass again. A cow eventually comes along and eats the grass with the ant on it. The cows digestive system breaks down the ant, releasing the parasites to plant more eggs in the next load of cow dung. Not directly related, but damn interesting at the same time. "The flesh slipped from between his fingers. The blood pooled all around him. This was the beginning." -The Beginning of The End |

That sounds a bit too big to be a killer bee. Killer bees are the same size normal bees and pretty much impossible to tell them apart from European bees by naked eye alone. How you describe the hive being in a hole in the ground and the size it seems like you stumbled on a colony of desert bumble bees. they too could have swarmed but they normally only live in colony of about 50 bees and id say the greatest danger would have been you panicking and getting attacked by the rattler.
even when killer bees go on the attack your only in danger if your allergic or if you stay in the area(ouch!!!)

Bumblebees are never that big, surely. Most are no bigger than honey bees, only fatter (due to all that fluff).
Something as big as a thumb..........sounds like a hornet, or some other sort of wasp. --------
