I just bought a nice new shiney piece of hardware, all running at stock speeds (ie no overclocking)
Intel e6600 core duo ATI 1950Pro 2Gb of RAM running a fully patched version of Windows XP Pro.
This should run Eve nicely, and it does for the most part, however....
for any given 10 minute period, for 2-3 mins the fps drops from 150-200 to 10-15. This happens regardless of where I am and what I am doing (even sitting in station, not even touching the keyboard/mouse). I had never really bothered with fps before, but with a new PC, my interest piqued. Consequently I have no idea if this type of fps behaviour is normal.
I guess my question is: Should I be investigating my hardware in more detail or is this simply an EVE thing?
If I need to check my hardware, what sort of things should I be looking at/for?

As an update..
I can fix the problem temporarily by resizing the game window. When the frame rate drops, if I switch from full screen to windowed mode (or vice versa) the fps jumps back up.
This makes me think it is NOT a hardware issue.
The problem is that after the third of fourth time I have done this, the game will then CTD (sometimes immediately after the switch, sometimes 30 secs later).
Any ideas / suggestions?

Something on your machine is taking up processing time.
EVE makes more use of the processor than it does of your graphics card. You'll get more eratic readings from your CPU usage spiking, than from your graphics card having issues rendering frames.
Check what's running in the background (AV's, etc). --- Cache Clearer |

Could be windoze interfering with dualcore problems. Try disabling all power saving features. There is threads on this subject around the forums.

This is a fresh install of both windows XP pro and EVE, so I have very little running in the background.
System Idle process is usually the most active process running (I have not installed AV etc yet)
I have tried all of the fps tweaks from the sticky thread (including increasing the priority of the eve exe file, but I still get the same problems.
If I run the client in windowed mode, when the fps slows, I can minimise it and immediately restore it and bingo - full fps.
Its a bit of a pain tho, and I'd rather understand what is going on.
All powersave features that I can find have been switched off.

The graphics card I bought Sapphire Radeon Ultimate x1950 pro comes with specific drivers that support its non standard clock speeds. I updated to the latest ATI drivers (which meant UNDERclocking my GFX card) and still had the same problems.
I updated my BIOS yesterday. Still have the problem.
I tried the suggestion in the linked thread, but setting affinity to one core simply makes the problem even more pronounced - when the frame rate drops, I get 6-8 (roughly half what I got when running the game across both cores).
I have all kinds of temp monitoring software to play with now and temps are farily cool (40 deg CPU temp Max, and 45 deg GPU temp Max).
I simply don't understand why the frame rate is reset as soon as I minimise and restore the game window.

Here's another one, http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=248740
The forum's search tool is pretty **** really. The patch listed in that thread should fix you up. There was a Windoze dualcore patch released from AMD also that might be of relevance.

It SEEMS to be fixed.
Yesterday I did three things and last night I played for over two hours without any proplems. \o/
I am not sure which one of these fixed the problem, but here is what I did.
1. I had missed some Windows patches, so I did a FULL update (the only update not installed is IE7) 2. I followed the link in Solbright's last post which mentionned a Microsoft patch for dual core processors, power management issues. I downloaded and installed the patch from the MS website.
Naturally I could not test either of these until I....
3. Patched the eve client.
And hey presto, all is good in the world!
Tx for your help.

Excellent. Looks like this will be a problem for dualcore use in a lot of games given it's a windoze bug. Could do with a sticky on this I guess.

Edited by: Avid Amari on 05/04/2007 13:43:05 Could allso be ATI and/or your motheroards feature. WHY?
If it happens when youre not doing anthing (just sit in the station or reading something (idling)). There may be a CPU/GPU degradation due to a feature built in todays motherboards and GFX cards. To lower the CPU/GPU clock speed to save power etc. Green feature in many great motherboards.
Im not saying this is the case, but its a theory Ive seen in practice in soem other game. it well might apply. Check your MB BIOS settings if you have enabled any % downgrading of CPU power in the case of IDLING.
Concider this only if Dualcore sollution doesnt seem to work.

Just to make it easier for anyone else having similar problems, here is the linkage to the Microsoft patch for dual core processors that may be suffering from 'slowdown'

I'd suggest turning off any sort of power management features in your bios rather than attempting to fix those same power management features via patches.

Hi there, I know necromancy is bad but I have the very same issue with the difference of not having a dual core. Computer is about as old as the one of the OP but I got a single core Athlon64 4000+ and a 1650pro ATI card.
I observe quite often irregular performance drops that suddenly happen and after a while disappear again all by themselves. Usually max a few minutes. I found nothing to make this repeatable. It seems totally random. As the advice above said: I disabled APM in the Bios and also patched Windows XP. Game Client is freshly installed.
Frame rate in "normal" mode is like 50-60 and with the performance drop about 5-10.
Some ideas to fix this would be great.

Dear CCP,
Once again, it seems that several of your employees have been up to no good. We'll get into the details a little later, but the highlights are quite juicy: CCP employees abusing their roles to join player corporations and give themselves director access, RP-events being rigged and what I really thought we were over, further fraternization between your employees and members of BoB and the subsequent cover-up. These latter two events actually stem from the same source, a former ISD member.
Let us begin with CCP Sharkbait joining the corporation "DarkStar 1" and giving himself director access. This was not preceded by a customer service request that would in any shape, way or form require a CCP employee to join the corporation. Less then one minute after joining the corporation, he added the role "Director" to himself, roughly fourteen minutes later, he leaves the corporation and surrenders the role.

Upon learning of this, corporate officers from DarkStar 1 immediately filed a petition in an effort to discover the reasons for this. This petition was promptly deleted and CCP Sharkbait would not respond to in-game conversations.
Why would a CCP Employee ever join a corporation without being asked to do so or any prior communication indicating that this would take place?
Why was the petition filed by officials from DarkStar 1 deleted with no response or reason?
The second part of this sordid story is best told "as is". Below I've included the account of one Raekhan, a former member of ISD. His story is two-fold and will encompass both the rigging of RP-events, as well as the fraternization between members of BoB and CCP and its cover-up.
