So to buy or not to buy, really depends but before you get out of your current mining ship (namely the Venture), as I am directing this towards newer players here are some numbers for you.
Porpoise+ Mining drones solo mining
Ice, lvl 1 cycle time 4 min+ = 1 block = ~240,000 ISK
Plagioclase 4 min cycle = 4,000+/- units = ~ 246,000 ISK
Pyroxeres 4 min cycle = 4,673+/- units = ~ 229,000 ISK
Scordite 4 min cycle = 9,443+/- units = ~ 224,000 ISK
Veldspar 4 min cycle time = 13,000+/- Veld = ~200,000 ISK
Venture
Mining lasers II + 2 X mining drones I -and mining laser upgrade I @ 4 min cycle = 22,693 units = ~350,000 ISK (nearly half full)
Civilian mining lasers + 2 X mining drones I -and mining upgrades I @ 4min cycle = 15,011 units = ~231,000 ISK
The Venture is hands down still an excellent ship when compared to a Porpoise + mining drones, even when cheapest fit possible especially considering price of equipment.
All cycle times, units mined, and ISK is approximate because different markets have different prices, and of course my skills may be higher or lower then yours.

I believe, the Porp has never been intended to be a solo mining ship. For solo mining, you have - you know - mining barges. Mining foreman ships' potential lies in providing boosts to the fleet, and the mining yield is just an added bonus to make its role more active and encourage its use in small fleet compositions. |

Absolutely agree, but you know there are folks who will do this, I'm not saying it is right or wrong, but sometimes newer folks rush out and buy before checking the numbers, as far as a small op mining command ship, it looks awesome. |

You didn't discuss skills or fit. Nor did you mention whether you were using T1 or T2 drones.
Mining drones will benefit from Drone interfacing (up to 50%) and the new mining drone specialization skills (up to 10%)
They also benefit from the drone mining augmenter rigs (T1-10%, T2-15% each)
With maximum skills/rigs you can probably double your yield - newer players can realistically consider T2 drones, T1 rigs and level 4 skills if they intend to use the ship as a solo miner. |

This was as said for newer players, you are not reading it entirely and are skimming, I did post "mining drone I" I also tried to provide information on advanced and basic set ups, this is not a complete guide, this is a basic understanding of ships and set ups so they can see some raw numbers, nothing more, I invite you or others to post a more in depth instructions on the numbers. |

For solo miners, isn't it better to suggest not using mining drones, and sticking strictly to lazers for extraction, and drones for defense?
My choice of pronouns is based on your avatar. Even if I know what is behind the avatar.

Depends on the security system in question, 1.0 you really don't have to worry about rats, same with 0.9, below that most rats are no problem until about 0.6 then they will jam you and hit you with rockets, etc, now if your suggesting AFK, well, that's a choice and then yes combat drones to guard.
Otherwise you can go with a mobile depot and have some combat drones in your cargo and switch out as necessary. |

AFK in a Venture is generally not a good idea, and not viable in 0.5. Besides the Venture's fill cycle is fairly short, so, it doesn't create a large enough time window to do much else.
Scout drones can allow you to stay out for a full fill cycle in 0.5, but for most sec status above this you can easily ignore rats and use mining drones. Even a Venture with only civilian shield modules could safely ignore rats in 0.6, and they are non-existent in 0.7 and above.
As for the PvP threat, no one is going to trouble themselves ganking a Venture. It is simply not big enough to worry about - and if they did, a pair of hobgoblins is not going to save you :) |

Previously, only the mining lasers had ship bonuses and MLU upgrades, so you'd get about 5:1 performance from lasers vs. drones. After the patch, if there is a ship with large drone bonuses and CCP introduces drone upgrade mods, there may be a 1:1 performance comparison, as can be seen from the numbers in the first post in this thread.
So drone mining could be viable; it depends on the ship, the location (how safe it is), the cost (of ship and drones), etc. |

Thank you, was just curios. I'm not a miner but I sometimes have to answer questions from newbie miners. I've been telling them to not use mining drones and use scout drones to discourage gankers. But I guess that has changed.
I never recommend afk anything to anyone.

It is situational. Like any part of your fit, drones should be adapted to the situation. Using drones to discourage gankers only becomes viable with the Procurer/Skiff, and often only when there are multiple of these mining together on grid. The Covetor/Hulk and Retriever/Mackinaw barge variants can also deploy a flight of light drones.. But they do not benefit from the role bonus and their tank is paper thin.
On all of my mining barges I recommend:
- 5 light scout drones - 1 salvage drone - 4 mining drones
Then deploy drones as the situation requires. |

I never recommend afk anything to anyone. I mined when I played along time ago but just coming back I'm rather new again
a guy left two hobgoblins in my my belt and when npcs showed up again I had my mining drones return to me and orbit then I abandoned them and scooped the neutral hobgoblins to drone bay and used them to fight the npcs then I abandoned them again and scooped them to cargo hold and took my mining drones back and sent them back out to mine.
Somehow I accidentally got 1 hobgoblin back into my drone bay tho. Not sure if I accidentally hit scoop to bay instead of cargo or if I somehow switched him from cargo to drone bay which shouldn't technically even be possible. But for a minute or two I had 4 drones out at once switching between them lol. Either way I ended up leaving with 4 drones instead of 2 and a full jetcan worth of ore I made a few trips for.
Drones are great for mining assuming you don't need to defend yourself constantly. it's like having and extra mini turret. I wish the venture had three turret hard points though for a third miner. Not sure why it doesn't when the ship was clearly designed to have three hardpoints on the front sides of the ship. |

What's changed? Drones never really did much if anything to discourage ganking and still don't.

There are many non-turreted high power modules which can use that slot. Some times a salvager can come in handy. Or a probe launcher if you're into WH's. I'm fairly certain that the Venture does not have the CPU to fit 3 mining lasers, even if the turrets were available.

your numbers are incorrect. 5 minutes of drone-mining gives me 4.000+m3 of ore. Skill - Industrial command 3. Explain yourself
