I needed over 10mil sp before I felt Amarr was useful in 0.0. And that was purely going for Amarr. So if you want to cross-race.. I recommend going for Gallente first, as most of the Amarr ships you probably will use will have decent drone space (likely Harbinger for PvE/PvP versability, and possibly Geddon). Harbinger isn't a good sniper but you have a nice allround of slots, chance to tank, chance to gank, and drones. So basicly.. going with Gallente will probably improve your drone and tank skills on the way; getting a decent Amarr option won't be many days away from that.
Don't just go for Amarr first if you want to cross-race, as you'll need so much just 'pure Amarr' that you won't be able to do anything else for a while. Armor tanking and drones, then get the skills for Harbinger/Geddon, last train lasers. That's my recommendation. Then you can use Amarr, even tho a bit gimped, and you still have the Gallente base to fall back on.

Both Gallente and Amarr er exceptional pvp'er/ratters so i can only tell you what i personally would preffer and that gallente... all depending on what 0.0 you are going to.. keep in mind that amarr can only deal em/thermal damage and gallente Kinetic and thermal ( bu exception of the drone carriers )

I do not want to cross race that is my whole goal in this decision is to really think it out so I can decide and focus on one race to excel in. Now once i get into 20 mil plus skill points I may cross race for different levels but atm I really want to just pick and focus on one race. Also if you think minmitar is a good choice but decide not to say that on my sp basis that is the whole point of this if I choose minmitar I understand I need more sp but with focusing I will bridge that gap a little faster than trying to choose multiple.

Ok, then I slightly mis-read your thread. Re-read your original post and thought about this; The main thing I want is versatility. Sometimes I like to snipe, sometimes I want to get up close and deal dmg close. So that is something i am wanting is ship selections that allow me to do that and be competitive in pvp.
Well.. I think all races has some kind of options and are not all that locked up tbh. Looking at my own choices, being pure Amarr, I'm generally sitting in Harbinger, Pilgrim, Arbitrator, Curse and Omen, atm. Harbinger is the laserboat, Omen I use for a bit of everything (lasers, drones, and one launcher). Arbitrators got ew, drones and a launcher, and well the 2 recons = ew + drones. Got a pvp-fitted Armageddon in my bay and it'd be easy to swap around some to snipe-fit it. Is that the kind of versatility you are looking for?
I'm quite confident that Gallente has something similar, they don't only nos and drone. You got the blaster-builds which by all means seems quite deadly imho? As for sniping I'm not sure, but then, I never even snipe with my 'geddon as I feel my skills lack (I'd assume the closest thing I come to sniping would be mid-range cruiser-size sniping in a Zealot). Minmatar seems more streamlined and locked up to me but I'll rest my case there. Can only say that I do enjoy Amarr, and I believe it's a quite nice race, with the options of long-/short range, drones, ew, etc.
Hope I got a bit more on track this time.

Yeah when I said I wanted versatility I was meaning one race that had versatility. I understand that I might not have the best of one or the other but the ability and to be effective in those areas with one race is what I was refering to.

Come on guys 150+ views and only 6 replies in which several are mine. I am really looking for some input here as I have in no way leaning toward one or the other and need to make a decision and get to focusing.

For arguments sake lets throw in Caldari. Since If I want to run solo I can already fly gallente ceptors or thoraxs. Lets look at long term focus for pvp in small gangs and some fleet ops. Would caldari be another solid choice. As before I really do not have one race/weapon totally biased as I have skill points spread out in the lower stuff on all of them.

Okey want my answer to your Question... deticate ALL your sp towards the Megathron.. it can Deal ALOT of damage up close and has a extreme sniper range of 170 km ( last i sat in one 5 mill sp ago ^^ )
for amarr they are very medicore on the range... they do best damage 15-40 km as far as i know... so for versitility gallente are the best in my eyes
