before i go furthur, this isn't a whine post, per se.. as this is a perfectly valid, and good tactic as far as i'm concerned, no matter the circumstances.
when does a good fight become a good gank? it all depends on the ship types really. I mean, a carrier versus 10-15 frigs? yea.. that would be a good fight.
but.. lets take it down a couple notches, for example, 1v1, 1v2 of the same ship types/hulls (cruiser/frig.. frig/AF.. nothing too extreme). even 2 cruisers against 1 cruiser is a good fight, as the lone cruiser does have a chance (not a good chance, but a chance all the same).
but, lets say, for example, 2 people in the system (or multiple people if there is a station or what not.. couple people in same alliance, some not, whatever). scanner picks up another cruiser.
both cruisers engage, and lock each other down. Fight is going good. Then, 3-4 other people come into system (ganged / same alliance.. whatever), and warp to thier gangmate, and of course, destroy the lone guy.
why say, "good fight?" instead, why not say, "good gank", or even better, nothing? like I said, there's nothing wrong with the gank tactic, perfectly good tactics, good setup, nice baiting, etc... heck, its what I would use.
(its like saying, good fight when you gank a hauler / freighter.. its not a good fight, there was no fight.. its a gank, pure and simple).
anyways.. saying good fight, when its not a fight at all, really annoys me to no end

You can just say YARRR or nothing at all.

i dislike the GF everyone trows around.. even at large alliance gatecamps, someone jumps in, 40 ships waporize the poor chap out on a sunday stroll in 3 seconds, and all 39 people and their dog says GF in local.
that was not a good fight, that was a very fast way of turning a ship into minerals without using the reprocessor... i would rather they started saying, CNST (Congratulations no smack talk) and left on their merry way... If you can't use proper spacing in your posts, use ALT+F4 to make it more readable

Personally I only say, and only consider this situation, GF when a fight is...
- visibly evened out (2v1, 1v1, 10v1, "even" is relative due to ships involved... a deimos vs a thorax isnt even. A deimos vs 3 thoraxes might be more even)
- Very close for both parts
- I actually did more then F1-F8 and wait, and I could see my opponent also did more then that.
They dont happen much, its a given, but when they do, its very satisfying.
...who of course promptly went bat****, flipped out and killed some people. |

I say GF in local cause the irony amuses me (referring to the times we jump 22 guys in on some poor sod)
I really do mean it though, sometimes.

tbh a good fight is a good fight when it could have gone either ways imo. I have fought outnumbered 5bs to my 1 before but they were much cheaper fitted and much newer players so again it could have gone either way so was a very good fight.
Even if the person had no chance of winning the engagement but takes out 1 of you or something and handles himself well then i would still say GF out of respect to the victim.
If it's a total gank like 10bs popping a cruiser on a gate then i wouldn't say GF in local usually.

If the fight is horribly one sided (and most of my fights are tbh, with me being the victor), I'd find it insulting if someone were to say 'gf' to me when they clearly cleaned my clock.
If someone does gank the crap out of me, and it's a well coordinated trap and a perfectly executed takedown (there have been a few), I do say 'nice job', but not 'gf'.
If however, it's a long, drawn out fight, and one of us only barely survives the battle, then that to me is a good fight, and I say so.
Because I said so...

Last Night some of my corp mates asked me to come roam around low sec with them (they chose Maraąwhy I will never know) So I meet up with them in my Drake. Not long latter Veto shows up, pwns them locks me down, damps me to nothing, I canĘt shoot. There four of them, three in T2 ships, and one in a Fleet Stabber. I call it a good fight because of how long it took them to actually kill me. Sure itĘs a gank, I couldnĘt do anything, but I was proud of my side of the fight due to my tank so there forągf! (oh and I really love being killed by corps I recognizeąIĘd rather kill themąbut both ways is fun to me!) About me! Darkness Inc. Recruitment! |

I say GF when it was a good fight. If I'm podded too quick to say anything then I usually send a gratz mail. On the ocassions where I roll somebody I don't say GF, but I might complement them if they managed not to panic, or if they refrain from smack in local. Sometimes I offer free advice, like the Brutix that was shield tanking, I told him armor FTW. I've met a few friends that way and if they ask questions I answer. Usually advice on how not to get owned again. Sometimes that advice is don't come to low sec ;)

Think of "good fight" as formalized good sportsmanship, like when both teams line up after a game to shake hands.
It may or may not be sincere, but at least it is something.

I usually say gf no matter what - but then, I think the biggest gang I've hunted with has been 3. Normally 2. Last night was exceptional, with a pretty good sized gang that got obliterated in CZDJ. GF to the invaders. =(
At any rate, my CEO told us to stop hunting in lowsec since we're needed in 0.0 now... So I guess I'll see you guys in Mara/Lowsec when we kick MC/YW out of the North.

Edited by: Shamis Orzoz on 04/04/2007 23:22:43 99% of the time "gf" is pure smack.
If you gank somebody 10v1, its NOT a good fight. If you fight a fair fight but you kill nearly all the enemies and take no losses, its NOT a good fight. If you fight a 1v1 and your shields never go below 95% before you kill the poor bastard its NOT a good fight.
The loser is always free to say GF, but in most situations the winner wins either because he had 2-10x the numbers, or because the guy he killed didn't know what tht hell he was doing, in either case a GF from the victor is nothing but pure smack.
When you totally beat somebody down, gf isn't appropriate. I'm always yelling at the swiggles for saying gf. Nothing drives me more insane than when our 15 man gang blows the snot out of some poor bastard in a thorax and one of my guys says "gf".

agreed. it is rather an insult to the victim tbh. i would usally say GF after i get killed if i had the slightest chance or lasted any amount of time as for me it's just showing good form. but if someone ganked me solo with about 15 ppl and said GF in local it would appear as smack to me.

gf is lame. Don't say a word either way, just go on to the next victim or ship refitting. What you don't say usually speaks louder and means more than anything you can say in local.
